“Luxury stay in a castle!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Barcaldine Castle in the Caithness room. The catle is fairly isolated, so driving there we weren't quite sure what we had gotten ourselves in for. But it was the best place we stayed on our trip around the UK! Liz and Ronnie were very friendly hosts, and our room was beautiful - we had a bathroom complete with bath overlooking the loch, bathrobes were provided, the bed was incredibly comfortable. It has all been done in a very beautiful yet warm and comfortable way.

We had an early dinner in Oban on our first night so we could come home early and watch a dvd in our bathrobes (they do have a library of books and dvds you can borrow), the room was just so comfortable we were a bit reluctant to go out!

Breakfast was also delicious, and as other reviewers have mentioned, the Hawthorn is well worth a visit for dinner.

Compared to our other accommodation, Barcaldine was at the more expensive end of the scale, however for a night or two of luxury it's money well spent. And stay 2 nights, at least.

Room Tip: I'm sure all the rooms are lovely, but Caithness has beautiful views, a full bath and a dressing...

It's a castle with secret passageways and a dungeon, but renovated with modern amenities in a beautiful setting. If you are looking for a castle experience, I'm not sure you will find a better one. The room - Breadalbane - was large and comfortable with a huge bath. Ronnie and Liz had good recomendations for things to do in the area and places to eat. Our first night, Ronnie sent us to a local pub to eat and watch the World Cup. It was a ton of fun watching with locals, and I'm sure we would not have found this place without his suggestion. Be sure to take the short, but steep hike in nearby Benderloch. The views are worth the effort.

Ronnie, manager of Barcaldine Castle on the shores on Loch Creran, was a great host, greeting and talking with us in the lounge, sort of a Knights’ Hall. The master painting paid homage to “Black” Duncan Campbell who built the castle in 1609, since renovated. Ronnie calls it a tower hotel, but it met all our expectations, complete with dungeon placed near the kitchen for extra torment. We stayed in the Argyle Room, which was clean and comfortable. Our room cost BPS 180, which puts it at the high end of our B&B accommodations. Liz served an excellent breakfast as we conversed with some world-wise fellow guests. Keep in mind this is a BYOB establishment. Recommended.

My wife and I stayed in Barcaldine Castle on 7 and 8 June and overall had a good time. Upon arrival Ronnie showed us to our room and was kind enough to make reservations for us at the near by Hawthorn Restaurant. FYI, the food at the Hawthorn was great!

Barcaldine Castle has a lot of history and much of it was on display, particularly in the Great Room and parlor. Our only complaints are that Ronnie and Liz didn’t make any attempt to educate us about he castle’s history, which would have been nice. Also, carpet in our room and ceramic tiles (which were loose) in the bathroom limited our “true castle” experience. Finally, a quick look around the rest of the castle would have been a great value added.

The above notwithstanding, Ronnie, Liz and the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and the breakfast was good, so overall a very good experience.

We are disappointed to learn that you were not fully satisfied with your stay at The Castle. Experience has taught us that not all of our guests wish to know of the Castle's history. On arrival we show all our guests into the parlour for check-in. We explain that the Parlour and the Great Hall are the public areas available for our guests to enjoy during their stay. At this point we find that guests who wish to know more about the Castle will ask questions and we are happy to spend as much time as they wish discussing it. The other area that we show guests is The Bottle Dungeon on the ground floor. We would normally do this as guests are checking out. Unfortunately you departed without coming to the office so this opportunity was missed.
There is an issue with the floor tiles in the bathroom of your room which we are seeking to remedy. We are puzzled as to the problem with the carpeting. On our recent inspection by Visit Scotland we were commended on the exemplary condition of carpets throughout the Castle.

On our 9-day trek through Scotland we had the absolute pleasure of staying here for one night. One of our must-dos for our trip was to stay in a castle with a fireplace. (The castle was recommended by our great tour guide Ian from Straivagin Tours) And this was that and more! Lovely, comfortable, well appointed, cozy. And proprietors Ronnie and Liz made sure we had anything and everything we wanted. We relaxed by the fire sipping our Scottish whisky, had a wonderful night's sleep, and enjoyed a fantastic Scottish breakfast. And Ronnie told us about the interesting history and renovation and showed us all the secret passages etc. Our only regret was that we could not stay longer! Highly recommend this accommodation and hope to be back for a return visit!

Spent 2 weeks in the UK and this was my favorite place to stay. The castle is so much fun and the common rooms are so much nicer than most other B&Bs. My only regret was not booking more nights there! You head up a windy staircase to your room which is very nicely decorated and spacious. The bathroom is Victorian without being overly done. The breakfast was fantastic and they were very friendly. I loved sitting in the small library in front of the fire. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

The rooms in this castle are modern and lovely. The care from the proprietors is kind and careful. The breakfast is beyond all expectations. If you are lucky to stay here, you are in for a real treat.
