My husband and I have stayed at the Catlins Kiwi Holiday Park twice - both times in the small cabins made for two. The cabins were nice - a double bed (although two twins are also available) with comfortable linens, a small table with a kettle and tea/coffee supplies, a flat screen TV on the wall, and a panel heater. Very comfortable little cabins that also included towels.

The facilities were fine - decent shower and restroom facilities. The kitchen was also nice (although a bit tight at busy times) with 2 cooktops, a toaster oven, kettle, and microwave. A decent refrigerator had plenty of room for our things. It did get crowded at meal times so we just chose to eat a bit later than normal.

The included wifi was good the first time and quite horrible the second time. There is no cell signal for many miles so the wifi challenges were a bit frustrating.

The restaurant on site is actually quite good - I would recommend a wood fired pizza. But it is the only restaurant for miles so be sure to take your own food to avoid eating at the same restaurant every night!

Yes, all the comforts of home, but during holiday times can be a bit crowded, as any other resort. We do our best with the wifi, but it is the end of the line and all radio operated, so better than the alternative? Thanks for your nice review.

The cabin we stayed in was nice, clean, warm and had comfortable beds and a green surrounding. Also nice to have a bar with tasty beer on the premises. On the negative side the children's playground was really dated and next to a not so child friendly generator. Also, they tried to charge us for the stay although we had payed in advance and it took some time to get that settled.

Thank you for you nice words, the restaurant is very popular. The generator is unfortunately really necessary as we have power outages in this part of the world and our guests get really unhappy if they can't dine during a power failure.
The play set is a functional for little kids I agree, there are lots of walks and things for kids to do around us, so not being in a city has it's advantages.

We were in the gorgeous Catlins for a few days. Stayed one night. Room was good with 2 separate beds and private shower/toilet facilities. We chose this for the private facilities - and of course you pay extra for this. Nice appointed room. Ate at the Whistling Dog restaurant. Very nice meal (blue cod fish and chips). Lovely presentation. However, be warned that the restaurant doesn't have "regular hours". Breakfast started at 10am, so if you want to see Cathedral Caves, whose hours vary depending on the tides, etc. bring something to eat (e.g. bread and peanut butter, fruit). There are facilities at the Holiday Park where you can boil water, use dishes, cutlery, etc. We arrived in time for dinner but again, the restaurant closes early, so make sure you check website for current hours and plan accordingly. I think they have problems w/ Wi-Fi in your room, so make sure the staff in the restaurant "reboot" the system before they leave for the night. We were given a password, but when we got back to the cabin, were unable to get Wi-Fi, so hustled ourselves back to the restaurant, where they were able to "reboot". However, if the restaurant had been closed, we would have been out of luck for the night/early morning. The location of the Catlins is very remote; so it's great to see a place like the Holiday Park, which offers alternative types of accommodation and a very nice place to eat. Obviously, you are going to pay more for accommodation than say a place like Dunedin, which has more competition.

Thanks for you nice comments, Lisa. The restaurant is the "Whistling Frog", but I do like the "Whistling Dog," kind of fun! We do stay open for the later Caves, but being so remote, we just run out of staff hours...! They work like mad for our guests. They are often there till 10 pm at night, and breakfast is not big for us, so we can offer in-room setup the night before. Our hours are 9:30 am till 7:30 pm for seatings. We stay open till the last guest leaves and that is often around 10 pm. We are happy to serve guests as long as the chefs are there and there are other guests dining.
I paid plenty for a wifi tower, so our guests could have free wifi. It is not fibre optic cable, it is a wireless system put together by a very clever 'local' in Balclutha. Hence, it is prone to outages, but hey it is better than the alternative... Prices are fair based on the remoteness and lack of city services. We also house our employees.

55 dollars for 2 people for one night and RVs have to park in a gravel car park. No grass area near rv, no picnic table no view. It's worth 25 dollars. We are in one now with a lake view, grassy areas and 38 dollars

Andrew,
You forgot to mention that we are in a gorgeous temperate rainforest, where it rains a lot and you are now in Central Otago, where it is rocky, dry and barren, but does have a lake..! It's all great.
What can I say? I'm not being mean, I'm being honest... Enjoy where you are...
If I put you on the grass you would be swimming in mud, your RV would be stuck and then you would really have a legitimate beef..! I would have to tow you out.
There is grass & trees behind the RV parking lots, for guests to enjoy, but not in the RV area itself because it would be a muddy mess. There are bellbirds, tuis, fantails & wood pigeons, that enjoy the environment I created, sorry you didn't notice? Not many of those in Central...
We provide camp tables and grass areas for you to enjoy, plus a lovely common room, with rain verandah, but we just can't have you parking on the grass, so sorry...
We also provide free showers, free wifi, free DVD's and a wonderful 5 star, on-site, restaurant & brew bar, with guest Happy Hour, for your total convenience.
You forgot to mention those perhaps...? Seems like a pretty good deal to me?
This facility has no public services, costs a lot to run, please give us a break....

We paid for a tent site and it was ok. Nothing special, common areas also typical camping. It was so far the most expensive camping in NZ for me and definitely not the best one. Free Wifi codes that we got were not working at our site and also not in common areas... Nice thing that the restaurant is nearby.

Camping is camping, not glamping. Not the most expensive that's for sure, it does include showers, common room, wifi, dvd hire.
But it is more expensive than DOC, which is heavily subsidised by the local taxpayers for our overseas visitors who now feel that we are ripping them off at $20 for all facilities, so probably need a wee reality check...?
