Our family of 7 took a trip to Narvik arranged by Abisko Guesthouse. It was a very nice trip with some stops for photos on the way and then a short tour of Narvik with a lovely lunch. And some shopping from fresh fish which we later cooked at the Guesthouse. Altogether a very nice trip.
It doesn't matter if you go to Abisko in the winter or summer; the adventures here are great. There are adventures for all types and levels of nature lovers and the landskape cannot be more beatiful or dramatic. Stay at the STF Abisko turiststation and you will be in the middle of the adventure already at the hotel.
We were fortunate to have as our guide Roger/ Bjorn the owner of the business. We were picked up from Bjorkliden and taken to be fitted out in thermal suits and helmets before being instructed on how to drive the snowmobile. Steady progress following Roger who was towing a family on a charming sleigh. The journey was through lovely nearby landscapes and we saw reindeer tracks and got to learn about the mosses they fed on as well. He turned often to check we were okay, went through safety issues and while it was a lovely morning and clear skies - not too cold, we did welcome a stop at a tepee for warmth and refreshments. We also got to visit the frozen lake and see his floating sauna there. He is very knowledgeable about auroras and recounted his meeting and guiding several astro experts. He is very professional and friendly and we appreciated his generosity, hospitality and expertise. Highly recommended.
Had lots of fun dogsledding. Did not drive the sled but we certainly participated by leaning to the left or right to keep the sled from tipping.
If your do not the silk to take photos with aurora. Photo tour is worthy to join to see aurora and learn to take them. However, it still depend on the weather.
Many thanks to Jack for a great evening and to the Northern Lights for performing in what was apparently one of their best shows this season. Like looking for leopards on safari there is no guarantee that you will be lucky. We were. The yurt, stove and hot drink made a welcome respite from the outside temperatures which refreshed the parts other winds cannot reach. To be recommended.
