Nice place inside a private condo with security and beautiful views. The place is going throw a modernization but still lots to do. They must work better their menu and service and also de acoustic on the rooms. It pretty poor and you hear everything that goes on.

This "resort" follows the general standard of Brazilian hotels: poor quality, completely run off and stack in the 60s 70s. It pretends to be a resort. Once you enter you'll find a old, dusty, dirty carpet that goes all along. It had ambitions during its opening, nowadays it's simply a piece of museum. Breakfast is told to be "supreme": again, just the ubiquitous Brazilian buffet of every hotel, served without any touch of personnality or style. Brazil suffers dork being too nationalist and little contact with other counties standards. But any hotel in Latin America or Europe is miles away. Let's not talk Asia, for instance: any humble resort in Thailand is 1000 times better than this "5 stars resort". To avoid if possible.

Thank you for your testimony. Sorry for not achieving your expectation and reported that the Laje de Pedra is a 3 star hotel. Really we are aware of the importance in adjusting to the demands of hosting international, so that we are undergoing renovations - started by the rooms that are most important and have already been renovated two wards. How for the satisfaction of our guests, both Brazilians and foreigners always valuing the quality of
treatment and services. When fully renovated would like to reverse these impressions and invited to return this hotel.
Thank you

We've stayed at this hotel for a 2 nights relaxing break. The hotel is set in a beautiful location and had everything to be top of the top... but it's not. The carpets look disgusting when you enter to the reception and unless you stay in the renovated area there is no point in even considering it.
The acoustic is terrible, the worse I've experienced as you can hear EVERYTHING from other rooms. The breakfast and views to the mountains is absolutely amazing and the employees are helpful.

The first night we've stayed in the old part of the hotel, in a room with wonderful view. It was great for the first two hours where there because the bathroom had a leak. They promptly went to see the damage and upgraded us to another room in the renovated area. When we were leaving the old room, we saw 2 huge spiders, I mean, huge. One was practically the size of a tarantula. We understand this hotel is set in a countryside location and this can happen but it clearly speaks for the old construction as you see gaps on the windows and doors which can lead to scary experiences like this one. I could never more feel comfortable in that hotel but as you need to pay everything upfront (even before seeing the rooms) we couldn't consider leaving.

The renovated space is much better but it's not luxurious as they call it! Please make sure you set the right expectations to your guests, ok? The bed was too soft and the pillow too hard which causes back pain!

Didn't try the indoor pool as it was small and was always full - smelled a lot like chlorine as well.

On a positive note, the hotel is child friendly and I believe if you have children is perfect for you.
They have a tourism agency inside the hotel, spa is available (although not managed by hotel), they have buffet and some restaurants pick you up at the hotel... so, everything is organized for you to relax and don't worry about anything.

I would not recommend this to young couples.

Room Tip: choose renovated area and ask for a view to the valley

This hotel has everything that makes for a great place to stay. And it does deliver on the promise: nice, attentive staff; facilities like external and internal pool; a scrumptious breakfast; and a marvellous view of the Gaúcha sierra.
It is really special and would be unbeatable but for some minor faults that need addressing: at the entrance, broken cement steps and a plastic awning that has not been cleaned in a long time; inside, carpets that clearly have seen better days.

The laje de Pedra hotel is ideal for people that would like to have some peace and quiet. In a beautiful place, with mountain views, is perfect for a romantic weekend.
It is a 30 year old. 5 star hotel..now a 4.5 star hotel. That needs some maintenance .... Which they are performing now October 2012

It is well located, near the center of Canela and 4 km from Gramado. Both cities are shopping cities and there are lots of cute restaurants and lots of great chocolates.

The breakfast was included and it has a good variety of food. It is a mix of Brazilian and American breakfast. The cakes were not very good, though. Not worth the calories.

The hotel had some problems: the outdoor swimming pool was dirty, (inexcusable) the tiles around it were broken; the room doors to and from the corridor were cut too short, (light coming from underneath) so we could hear people in the hall.... Especially a problem of you sleep in as the hotel is child friendly.

The carpets in the living areas were ready to be replaced: they were stained and look old.

There was no heater in our room. They provided us with a old portable heater. Kinda scary, was noisy and didn't look very safe. It is very cold there, a heater is a must have.

Besides all that, the wing that we stayed had been remolded and the bathroom is beautiful and big and has little jewelry lights in the showers.

Excellent courteous staff. Very relaxing.

I was astonished at the awful quality of the room I was given for the price paid. A friend and I had to pay an extra upgrade (twice the value advertised on the internet) at the time of check in to stay in a relatively decent room. Very very old and dusty room! No heating! Fixtures and white tiles from the late 70s in poor conditions! The first impression when you look at their standard room is that it has not been cleaned in a long time. The bathroom has an old greasy plastic curtain in the shower and the toilet has yellow stains that suggest lack of care.

Too expensive for the terrible rooms. Mould and paint cracks abound in the rooms and in the common areas in the hotel. Definitely you can do better in other hotels because there are many other (much better and cheaper) options in the surroundings. Location is also something to consider if staying at Laje de Pedra: the hotel is a long drive (10 min) from the center of Canela, really impossible to walk (even if you are an adventurous traveler like myself). There is no public transportation in the area and no hotel shuttle to the city center. So, if you intend to explore the surrounding areas, you should either rent a car at the airpot in Porto Alegre (renting in Canela or Gramado would be more expensive) or simply stay in a more central hotel.

When we paid for the upgrade at the front desk during check in (I insist, their standard room is an inhospitable place!) the receptionist didn`t seem surprised and, in fact, told us many people do the same. So my friend and I realized it is a tourist trap (I should add you pay the full amount of your stay during check in, so there is no turning back in case you want to go to another hotel after looking at the room).

If you are driving, parking is available within the hotel area, but the space is very limited. They have valets who will park your car but, as we observed, they are not very careful and have to do wonders to make all cars fit in the parking lot.

About their heating system: it is a(n old-fashioned) water heater (no ar conditioning or heater in the rooms). It is (they say) automatically turned on when the outside temperature is 14oC or less (57oF or less). Until then, you have to make do with dusty blankets and pray the broken locks of the wooden doors that open to a filthy little balcony will hold the wind. Really? It is 2012! Other hotels make up for their lack of heating with a fireplace in the room. But the rooms in Laje de Pedra are so small that this solution would not be possible.

The restaurant is expensive (especially for families with kids) and the meals are not so good. If you have a big family and no car, you will only have their restaurant as an option.

I saw some guests trying to hitckhike their way to the city and back (but hitckhiking isn't very easy in Brazil, so they were stranded at Laje de Pedra). Poor them!

Anyway, to highlight a positive side of my stay: the view from the breakfast room is beautiful. But, again, not worth the problems you have to put up with in the hotel. I don't know how this hotel earned (if it actually did) its 5 stars. It is a very expensive run-down bed and breakfast. I see the word "resort" in its name... well, the managers of Laje de Pedra should travel more to understand the true meaning of the word resort.

Tourist trap.
