“A great discovery”
Reviewed 20 December 2010

My secretary found the Black Horse as an alternative to the branded hotels. The service was great, the food was home cooked, the room was clean and the price was right. The free internet is great but it's hit and miss in the room so this could be improved.

We've just returned from a 3 night stay and the Black Horse is a great location for trips to Cambridge and surrounding areas. The bus stop is outside the pub if you fancy a break from driving - every 30 minutes to Cambridge.

The rooms - ex stables - are adequate though a more comfy chair would have been nice. The single beds we had were in need of updating - the springs in our mattresses came up to meet us when we laid on them. However, the shower worked better than some 5 * hotels! The pub food is good value and you'll have a great choice of beers. The staff are more than capable and very friendly. Overall, great value compared to the Cambridge hotels and their whopping parking charges.

Just one annoying thing - the accomodation is behind the pub and close to the designated smoking area. In the evening smokers congregate and jolly alcholic banter is annoyingly loud. The backdoor thorugh which all and sundry pass slams with force continously. Thankfully someone propped the door open on the Sunday evening.

So take your own doorstop with you just in case.

My wife and I visted Cambridgeshire in early May of this year to pursue our family history interests.

We stayed at the Black Horse Motel because it was central for our purposes. It had a change of ownership/managment a few months ago , not that you would know as we later found out they were on excellent terms with the locals. We received a warm welcome.

The rooms were perfectly adequate for our two night stop, they were clean and well presented.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and started each day with a full english breakfast. We also had our evening meals in the attached pub and found the meals to be of a very high standard. On the nights we were there the pub was fairly busy but this did not cause us any problems in the motel rooms.

Swaffham Bulbeck is a very pleasant, quiet village and is only some five or so miles from Cambridge.

We would happily recommend it for short stays.

A pleasant place to stay about 20 mins drive outside Cambridge. The room was large enough though made smaller by too much large furniture. Linen and towels were fresh and clean. Food is good and plentiful.

There is a bus every half hour from outside the pub to Cambridge, or you can drive to the outskirts and Park n Ride. The pub is fairly quiet in the evening - no rowdy customers!

The best bit is the friendliness of the staff. Without exception, everyone went out of their way to be helpful and welcoming.

My Partner and I wanted to get away from it all for two days, so we decided to visit Cambridge. I did not want to stay in the city so I looked for a pub with accomodation just outside. I came across the Black Horse Motel In Swatthem Bulbeck which advertised as a friendly atmospheric pub with good food and a good selection of ales. We were not dissapointed. The room was small but quite adaquate for our needs. It was clean and serviced while we were out. The locals in the pub were friendly and the food was excellent. We paid £2 each for the park and ride in Cambridge and had a wonderful day out. A very relaxing weekend for us both and will go back again.
