Serena Suites
Reviewed 28 July 2014 via mobile

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Serena Suites, Turunç. The location and view from the apartments are outstanding. The gardens and pool area are stunning. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. But... I could have cried on arrival. I wished to be teleported back home

The toilet looked like it hadn't been effectively cleaned in years.
The beds my children were to sleep in were broken and collapsed meaning I had to make up the sofa beds for them to sleep (we arrived in the early hours).
Whilst doing this I noticed there was an electrical socket in the living room which had the face missing, exposing (possibly live) electrical wires. There was holes in walls, self catering equipment for 2 when there was 4 of us. The lift was also broken for approx 5 days whilst we were there.
The common area/ bar toilets were vaporised with potent urine enough to make your eyes water.
Overall, the cleanliness of the apartment and pool area was a complete disgrace. I wouldn't put a monkey into those conditions never mind a human family!

We did complain and were moved a few days later to an upgraded room which was far better but still in desperate need of a good scrubbing.

On the other hand Turunç is beautiful. We spent all waken hours in the village. We used other hotel pools which were far cleaner. We researched the local area in search for superior accommodation for our next visit and viewed lots of pristine, modern, well maintained accommodation (which was the same price as Serena Suites).

We thoroughly enjoyed out time in Turunç and will definately return, just not to the Serena Suites again

We travelled as a family of 5. Only one airconditioned room so 4 of us slept in there but we all had a wonderful time! Turkey at it's best....quaint quirky & very hospitable. Great staff. Thanks Gokham Tim & Akif who really looks after us. Not a 5 star Thomas Cook Hotel & some issues with the cleaning of the rooms which hopefully are being addressed but you will enjoy your stay. We were bed breakfast & evening meal & whilst we intended to eat in the town it was not necessary. Whilst we didn't have a choice of evening meal the food was always excellent & piping hot. Lunch on the beach at the Yali was our regular treat. 2 boat trips, both great..Sally & MustI & we loved the Monday market.

Arrived early in the morning exhausted after a 12 hour journey to be told that our room was at the very top of all the apartments which was fine- apart from the fact that the lift was broken!! We were made to walk hundreds of steps - bless Abdullah (a member of staff) who carried 40kg of our luggage up the stairs with him.

ROOM -When we arrived at the room it was filthy - as if it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. e.g- yellow slime in the kettle and dust absolutely everywhere. The room we booked claimed to be a self-catering room which was ridiculous considering we only had 2 dirty and rusted spoons and forks and 1 filthy frying pan.The plates were greasy and there was no washing up equipment whatsoever. With the hotel being situated on a mountain, carrying supermarket shopping up there in the heat especially whilst the lift wasn't working was virtually impossible and money on a taxi had to be spent.

SELF-CATERING - As we were travelling with 2 other couples, we visited their rooms which were a lot lower than ours to see if the standard of theirs was just as bad. Although not immaculate, our friends rooms were amazing compared to ours with modern furniture, proper lighting in the bathroom and full set of self-catering equipment. (Their rooms were also quite dirty though).

Being extremely unhappy with the room especially after seeing our friends rooms, my husband and I decided to talk to someone about changing the room. Upon arrival at reception we were told we had to wait 2 more hours before the manager arrived and instead of walking up all those stairs again we preferred to wait at reception for the 2 hours.

HOTEL FOOD - Due to the 2 hour wait we ordered some breakfast. I ordered a dish called Sucuk and Eggs which was vile and inedible considering the eggs we literally slime as they were half raw. This was a huge shame as Turkey is notorious for wonderful food.

MANAGER - When the manageress arrived, she seemed to be quite fake and unsympathetic. She lied to us in saying that the lift would definitely be fixed that day or the next and that if we were so unhappy with the room she would move us but not until 4 days into our 6 day holiday.

INJURY- After missing out on our first day of our holiday with our friends due to the ridiculous amount of stairs we decided to have a night in at one of our friends rooms. On the way up to or room after this rendezvous, my husband tripped on the stairs which was very sharp and the pathway was not well lit. The bottom part of his big toe ripped and was bleeding vigorously. We had to go to the doctors at 1am, which Osman kindly drove us to, and had to pay 100 lira for medical expenses which did put a dent in our budget.

OVERALL - When the lift finally started working halfway through our trip things did improve a little. The poor cleaners were more efficient and some new cutlery and cooking equipment was put in our room.
The only thing that couldn't be faulted about our stay was that our room had a spectacular view - especially at sunrise.

Room Tip: Bottom rooms a lot nicer than top but views are no where near as good as the top.

Arrived in the early hours, were a family of 6 and were greeted by a lovely guy called Tim who sorted are room out. Once in the room was pleasantly surprised by how big our 2 bedroom apartment was. Nice clean comfortable beds, and a view to die for. We could not fault this hotel because the food, all staff, pool area, bar area were absolutely lovely. Really great atmosphere and very relaxing. Obviously there were a few little problems such as the lift breaking down on our 2nd day, so had to tackle all them steps everyday but did'nt ruin our holiday in any way. Had no intentions of cooking while on holiday so have no opinion on the kitchen area. We had clean bedding and towels every day. Really enjoyed our stay and will be going back, big thankyou to everybody at the hotel for a wonderful holiday. Stayed in room 505.

We've just arrived back from 2 weeks at the Serena Suites. As with most guests we spoke to, we also had to change rooms after 2 days because the air conditioning wasn't working. Both rooms we had were despicably filthy, clearly not have been properly cleaned for weeks, if not months. The shower and toilet facilities were disgraceful---shower drain broke and enough human hair in the drain to make a wig. (see photo).. Cooking utensils were rusty, and a health hazard.
The room was not cleaned and changed for the first week we were there, and we had to constantly complain. "Cleaners" then usually arrived around 7pm, just the time we wanted to relax after a day in the sun, and they paid lip service to cleaning the room. As other reviews have mentioned, the lift wasn't working for 7 consecutive days--it was a long slog up and down 340 steps..! Swimming pool has no depth markers, or lifebelt.
The apartments are very tired and extremely tatty, and clearly have had no maintenance for a considerable time. It's a great shame, as the views from the apartments of Turunc are spectacular.
We are regular travellers to Turkey, and we always stay in 'basic' accommodation, but previously they have always well maintained and clean and tidy. This is the first time we have had cause to complain. This experience will not deter us from returning to Turkey, and Turunc--but never at the Serena..!

Room Tip: Pick another hotel...!!

We didn't expect five star accommodation and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Its position on the hillside is fabulous and the whole place has a nice quirky atmosphere and very attentive and helpful staff.
We did have the much reported air conditioner problem for the first day and night but after making a complaint we were quickly moved to a lower room with super efficient a/c and far fewer stairs to climb. This was a real blessing as the lift didn't work for most of our holiday and climbing loads of stairs in the baking heat was most unpleasant.
I had no intention of cooking in the room and can't understand how anyone would cook with the dreadful dirty and limited kitchen equipment that you might expect to find in a grubby bedsit.
The pool was great but suffered from the usual bed hogging by people wandering off for hours and leaving their towels to claim ownership. I have yet to stay in a hotel that actually enforces the no saving beds rule so this wasn't a surprise.
The room was cleaned daily and we were inundated with fresh towels.
We loved the hotel cat and met and chatted to some lovely people in the bar area.

My only big issue was with the constant, loud euro-trash music blaring from speakers by the pool all day every day. This is a family hotel and really doesn't need the banging bass backdrop.

I would return but advise potential guests to plan not to cook in the room and to be prepared to come back fitter than you arrived after the daily step workouts.

Room Tip: The lower the better....

Stayed here for 10 nights in the middle of the roasting hot weather in July, when we arrived we were quickly rushed to our room, it was a lovely 2 bedroom apartment but was literally like a sweat box, we weren't informed that the air conditioning had to be purchased at reception so we tried to suffer for 1 night, when it came to around 1, this was no longer an option, we then had to pay the £40. The room was very basic with little cutlery, and everything seemed to be dirty.

After our second night, we woke up to a note on our door asking us to come to reception, we were then told that we had been put into the wrong room and would we be able to move rooms, we decided not to make a fuss and move, keeping in mind that they had promised us a better room, we ended up nearly being on the top floor, which didn't help when the lift then broke, it wasn't the first time that it had broken down whilst we were there, although this time it took them 5 days to fix it, the room we were moved to also was very cool so we wouldn't of needed air conditioning if we had of been out in the room in the first place, we also didn't have any hot water for the first two days of being in this new apartment and they finally fixed it after numerous times of complaining. The room we were moved to also hadn't been cleaned when we moved into it, although the maid did come regularly after this, mopping everyday and making sure that we had towels etc.

The bar/restaurant staff were the best thing about the hotel, they were willing to help whenever you needed something, the pool was also one of the top things about the hotel, although more sun beds would be good at peak seasons, we found some days there really wasn't enough. Whilst complaining the manageress offered little if no help, we also arrived back to our room some days and decorators would be in changing lights or putting up pictures, the room just felt really basic.

If I was to stay here again, I would request a room lower down and make sure that I didn't have to climb 300 steps every time the lift was broken which was often. Would return the town that we were in, but would need some convincing to stay here again.

Room Tip: Room low down in case the lift breaks down!
