“A Great Family Getaway!”
Reviewed 22 March 2009

We decided to have a quick getaway during Spring Break and I looked on the website for a destination on the Sunshine Coast. This resort appealed to me because it had one bedroom suites with a kitchenette. This worked out really well for our family with a 4 month old and 23 month old.

March is not the ideal time to visit the Sunshine Coast but we were pleasantly surprised to have only rainshowers (while the rest of Vancouver had solid rain). It was really cold but we came prepared with our fleece and rainjackets!

We stayed in the luxury one bedroom suites. The suites are well designed so that they do not share a wall with any other room. We had a patio suite which allowed us to enter and exit without having to use the hallway. The suite was smaller than I expected but it was very clean and the kitchen was equipped with all the basic cooking gear. (We prepared all our meals in the kitchen during our 3 day stay). The fireplace was a nice addition and well used after chilly evening walks on the beach. The king-sized bed, robes and chocolates added to our comfortable stay. My sister-in-law travelled with us and was given a room with an exterior entrance (since she was travelling with her dog). She was impressed with the cleanliness of the room, the good-sized deck & the fabulous view. (Regarding one of the previous reviews, in my opinion the newer lodge is a definite upgrade over the older one & would be recommended over the older lodge).

The owner was very hospitable and brought us a BBQ & crib (Pack n' Play) promptly when requested. He was friendly and asked more than once if there was anything else we needed when we saw him around the resort.

The resort itself has a great location in Pender Harbour. We enjoyed walking on the beach at low tide (not much access at high tide), looking at the boats in the marina and the childrens' play area. The hot tub (with an amazing view) was open but we didn't have enough time to enjoy it!We enjoyed hiking at beautiful Francis Point Park (a 15 minute drive). On a previous trip to the area, my husband and I had a fabulous dinner at a restaurant across the bay in Garden Bay. The Skcookumchuk is another great walk and there are lots of great little communities to check out. We've really enjoyed each trip we've made to the Sunshine Coast & especially enjoyed our accommodations at the SCR!

This review pertains specifically to the standard one-bedroom suite we stayed in for four days in late August 2008 at the nightly rate of $185 + $20 for a pet + tax; we are not in a position to review the luxury accommodation photographed on the website. The grounds, for the most part, are beautifully landscaped and maintained, and the luxury accommodation looks very attractive. The location on Pender Harbour is scenic.

But our standard suite -- the only accommodation available when we booked at this "pet friendly" resort which accepted pets -- and which was advertised as being only slightly smaller than the luxury suites, provided very poor value for money, and had a number of safety and quality issues.

The suite was reached either by ascending or descending one of two narrow and steep flights of wooden steps for which wire mesh served to help prevent slippage. However, no handrail is provided on either flight of steps, and in places the wire mesh is loose on the noses, presenting a tripping hazard.

The entrance to the upper approach was, throughout our stay, marred by many bags and boxes of recyclable bottles and tins, and a number of gasoline containers in close proximity to a propane tank. In addition a brown hose, blending with the ground surface, was left lying for more than 24 hours at the entrance to our suite and could have provided another tripping hazard at the top of the stairs. We finally coiled and replaced the hose ourselves on the approriate holder. (See photograph)

The kitchenette, described as "fully equipped", contains neither a ventilation hood nor an oven. The four-burner electric hob doubles as the area where the dish drainer must sit. Even more problemmatic from a safety point of view, the microwave oven is on a shelf over 5' 5" (165 cm) above the ground, representing a high risk for any shorter individual removing hot food from it. Other equipment (kettle, toaster, coffee maker) is of the cheapest quality and, in the case of the coffee maker, badly stained by what appeared to be years of use.

A propane barbecue is provided on the balcony but was not cleaned before our visit; initial lighting produced flames over 3 ft high when old grease caught fire. This impressed us as a significant fire hazard in this older wooden structure. When fire safety was mentioned to the owner/manager, he said if there was a fire, guests could always jump over the balcony (approximately 15 ft down to a hard rocky hillside landing) and anyway, he told us, the local fire company had come and said there was no problem because they could get their trucks in. No fire safety instructions were provided, giving -- for example -- a meeting place where a headcount of registered guests could be made.

Regarding quality: 1) the carpet was badly soiled; 2) the fitted bedsheet was a worn, nearly threadbare flannel sheet with considerable pill; 3) approximately 30% of the towels provided were thin and threadbare; and 4) the tea towel provided was a thin, torn rag. There were no barbecue utensils and no potholder or oven mitt was provided.

Housekeeping consisted of someone coming in two days during our visit, emptying wastebaskets and removing towels that had been used without replacing them, and, in one case hanging up the thin wet cotton bathmat that had been expressly placed in the bathtub for replacement. We saw no evidence of vacuuming or other cleaning. Given this standard of housekeeping, it is unclear to us why $20/day is imposed for the potential of a few dog hairs: a higher pet rate than we have ever been charged over years of travelling with a dog through North America.

While the European owner/manager did respond politely and promptly with some of our requests to rectify deficiencies, when we expressed our dissatisfaction regarding both safety and quality to the owner/manager, he evinced incredulity at our concerns. No one has ever complained in the last 14 years he has owned the resort, he told us, and then stated that, because this is Canada, basic safety and quality standards imposed in Europe and the United States do not apply.

For $200+ per night, quality standards certainly should apply, and there should be no excuse whatsoever for poor safety standards.
