Villa Mare
Reviewed 18 September 2013

I stayed at the Villa Mare in June with my mother. The apartments are very basic, but you what do you expect in Greece? It all adds to the experience!! The pool area was spotless & the apartments were kept very clean by the hard working but friendly maids.

Alex & John (owners sons) were polite & hard working lads who held the fort very well whilst their dad was in Canada, and always had time or a chat whenever we crossed paths. Also, Emily the Thomas Cook rep couldn't be more helpful (If you read this Emily, remember the earth quake?). We made some friends out there.. Dave & Lorraine & also the Wakefield family - hi!!

We will certainly return to the Villa Mare apartments in future, just like other people we got talking to who have been year after year.

If anyone sees a ginger & white cat (marmaduke), say hello from the Huddersfield ladies!!

It's now a week ago that we flew home, tanned and relaxed after our holiday. We have stayed in Lourdas many times but it was our first stay at the Villa Mere. The rooms were clean, the pool area clean, very relaxing with a view out to the near by sea. We met a lot of nice people from the Villa Mere, keeping in touch with some!

Looking to go back again next year, also my daughter and her partner who stayed at the Villa mere the two weeks previous to us are going back too, hopefully for 3 weeks!

A beautiful place to stay if you like to relax, and like quiet places.

This was our seventh year in Lourdas but certainly the most disappointing accommodation we have ever had, ANYWARE. Right from the arrival at the 'Room Under The Stairs' we new it would be awfull. The people in the adjacent room were already shouting at the owner & Thomas Cook rep about their room. Ours had not been cleaned & was small, dark & hot with three single beds(not the double requested) crammed in.
The outside 'patio' area was on the main pathway from the other rooms to the beach. The catering facilities were a fridge with two ring hob on top & a sink, no drainer or worktop & plenty of ants! I remonstrated with the owners son (Useless ALEX, told you I would make you famous!) asking for an alternative room & even offering to swap with our complaining neighbour but to no avail! The airconditioning, we were informed was an extra E70 & the safe E20. Welcome to the Villa Mare.
We never spoke to the owners again as they rarely seemed to be about which was much to the confusion of subsequent arrivals who were apparently greated by the Even More Useless MOTHER of Useless ALEX who told them 'You must speak to my son if you have any questions'. They in turn often came to us as we were the 'Room Under The Stairs' probably assuming such a dingy area must be the office.
Other rooms were undoubtably better half even having a sea view but until you get there you just dont know.
So, unless you want to risk spend your holiday like Harry Potter I suggest you pick one of the many other places along the beach.

On the plus side the accommodation is close to the lovely Lourdas beach and to restaurants & bars such as Dametris (now Sunset Beach Bar with WIFI) with the friendly Hellaine & her brother ,also to Litheros Fish restaurant with the lovely hardworking Bree & the charming but disorganised Gerry, to Clematis with its extensive menu & the efficient Head Waiter - Leon. And ofcourse Lorraines House On The Hill as wonderful a place as you could ask for on a balmy evening.

Fortunately we are regular travellers having 5 or 6 holidays a year so while this is the worse room we have ever stayed in we are off to Venice soon, but for those of you less fortunate than us THIS PLACE COULD RUIN YOUR YEAR!

Room Tip: Pot luck Im afraid as you cant specify though certainly avoid room 3. Not ground floor and with sea...

Nice, clean but fairly basic apartments.

Location is great and the pool is lovely but slightly let down by the lack of pool bar. So close to other amenities that it hardly matters.

Great holiday though and definitely worth booking.

We have just returned from 2 weeks of bliss at Villa Mare. As a party of 11, the owner was very accommodating and situated us on the ground floor enabling us to use the lovely extended patios and sun loungers. Accommodation very simple - but its Greece and no different from other 2 star self catering places we have been to. Eating out every night for 2 weeks, our best was Olive Garden and Andromeda situated up a VERY steep hill which does work up an appetite as Lourdas is very spread out so a car is really necessary, CBR car rentals seemed to be the most popular and reasonably priced, ran by an English couple. The beach at Lourdas was merely a stride away and a very nice beach too, clean and the sea was lovely and clear. The pool area at Villa Mare was also lovely so we were spoilt for choice. Lourdas is a fairly quiet resort, not many children but we had 7 children travelling with us so that wasn't a problem and they felt very safe walking around the area. I would definitely return to Villa Mare. It was a real 'get away from it all' holiday.

Villa Mare is very close to a beautiful beach, the beaches are much nicer on this side of the Island. We stayed with our family and friends and managed to get 4 rooms all next door to each other. They were all on the ground floor and had ample space for all 11 of us to socialise during the day time and evening (complete with sun loungers and patio furniture). All the rooms had an airer outside also. If you require privacy I would suggest you book an upstairs room with a balcony. The rooms are very basic but completely functional, we managed to cook lunch in the room every day. The kitchenette could have done with having a toaster maybe? The owners live on the top floor and are always around and very helpful. The bedding and towels were changed every 3 days and the floors mopped. Bins were emptied nearly every day but the large bin was only round the back if you needed to empty it yourself. The swimming pool had plenty of sunbeds and parasols around the edge, it was always clean. The majority of people staying at Villa Mare had no children with them and the look of horror on some faces around the pool when we turned up in a morning with 7 children stood out a mile!! The views of the sea were spectacular from the villa and the pool area. At the bottom of the hill is a family run bar called "Sunset Beach Bar" you are made to feel very welcome. Then food is also excellent for a light snack. We ate out every night in the local area sometimes climbing up the very steep hills to the busier part of Lourdas. Our most recommended Tavernas would be Blue Sea,Olive Lounge and Andromeda's. At the top of the hill is a car rental shop called CBR if you are thinking about hiring a car book it at the start of your holiday as they soon run out of vehicles, they also do trips, I would recommend the Island day trip it covers alot the the little villages and attractions on Kefalonia. We would happily go back to Villa Mare and Lourdas because it is still unspoilt, its quiet, affordable and its a little piece of paradise.

Room Tip: 1)Room 4 has a perfect outside area and is big enough for 3 sharing. 2)Book air conditioning (local...

Villa mare is situated very close to the beach, unfortuately apart from a few average restraunts,it is the only amenity accesable without a lung busting climb up a very steep mountain. If you have any fitness issues you will require a car to visit all of the best restraunts and shops. These appartments in my opinion seem to have been very badly designed , only the upper floor appartments have any kind of view or balcony/private terrace. Unfortunately we were situated on the ground floor were our apartment had a nice view of the road and anyone walking past had a nice view into our apartment ,very amusing for them not for us. In front of our apartment was a flower bed with three palm trees were luckily for us, we were occasionally entertained by two rats run running up and down the middle tree and also the occasional visit from a snake slithering past {none poisonous I found out later}. The best place to go at night and for a lunchtime snack is demitris bar run by a lovely greek family. To sum up if you are looking for a holiday were there is nothing to do in the evening and nothing to spend your money on apart from an over priced mini mart, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: To get the best appartments you have to contact the owners to request an upper floor apartment or yo...
