“Contessina superb hotel”

This hotel certainly lived up to the reviews that have been posted. Having been a traveller to many of the Greek islands this hotel certainly is a class above your typical Greek hotel. We had a newly refurbished room that was excellently presented, the bathrooms are amazing. The hotel is immaculately clean in all public areas and bedrooms, the swimming pool area was scrubbed each morning and the sunbeds hosed down. the swimming pool itself is very clean. The only disappointing factor was the additional cost of the air conditioning, (10 Euros per day) which was essential in August, visitors need to make sure that they budget for the extra. The staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing being too much trouble. Eating out was very reasonable and there are many different types of restuarants to choose from, the walk into the Tsilivi was pleasant and offered a great selection of eating and drinking places, I would certainly recommend The Family restuarant very welcoming and accommodating of a large group. i would certainly revisit this hotel as it ideally located for the beach, shops etc.

We stopped for 10 days in August. Great location and very close to man strip and beach. Hotel was very clean and staff were very friendly. We had an old room which was disapointing but we did not complain as it was quiet compared to other rooms would be. Air con was expensive and not included in room which (10 euros per night) is the only draw back. Adam our First Choice rep was very good. Turtle spottting trip was great and value for money. Do not go on smugglers cove trip-waste of money. Try Zeus, Georgios, the Old Village and City Grill for food. Planet bar and Two Brothers for drinks.
Great holiday overall and certainly recommend it for couples and families.

The hotal itself cannot be faulted at all. It was spotlessly clean - they are forever cleaning! The staff were amazing and so very helpful - especially Diana, who was fantastic and after just two days even knew what room we were staying in. The location was fab, just a short walk from the beach and close to the bars. The rooms were beautiful and clean and the view from our balcony was lovely - we could even see Greece! Had heard complaints about a chicken farm. Don't be put off - this chicken farm was right below our balcony - it was more like a pen with a few chickens, they weren't noisy or smelly and I heard the rooster maybe twice, but even that wasn't loud. I actually quite enjoyed watching the chickens. Didn't actually use the pool, but it looked lovely and the sunbeds had towels on from 7am, although if they aren't being used I think staff will remove them! The breakfast wasn't great, but they do try and cater for all, with some very strange ideas of what people might want for breakfast. Thought peaches and cream was quite strange! The only problem we found with the hotel was that we had to pay 140 euros extra for the 10 days we were there for air con, fridge and safe. Although from speaking to the hotel staff it sounds like this is normally included in the price but most the travel agents opt out of it to get the rooms cheaper, and then make us pay for it once we're there! Very cheeky! If I was to go again I would definately cut out the middle man and book directly through the hotel and sort own flights out, as taxi would have only been 10-15 euros each way from airport to hotel and it's cuts your transfere time in half!

Just a few other tips,
Eating out, shouldn't be a problem, we ate somewhere different every night, except our last night in which we went back to our favourite place which was Menirs (this was right out of hotel and just a few doors down!)! The food was lovley and very reasonably priced and the staff very friendly. We also ate at a few places on the main road (left out of hotel, then right at top of road) Georgios, Popeyes and Dionosis, these were also good. I also recommend Romeo and Juliets which is an Italian, very good portion sizes and you can get a 3 course meal for 9.50 euros, You can also get a 3 course meal for this price at Majestic's which is just a bit further down, but worth the walk. There was also a lovely man at Asian Feast who gave us 15% off and was so friendly (the food there was lovely for a special treat!) he would stop in the street to have a chat. It amazed me how friendly everyone was and how people are so good with faces.
There are many good bars to drink in our favourite was the Drunk moon bar which is left out of the hotel, right at top of road and just a couple of doors down. There you will find Jim!! He is lovely and friendly, and after just a few trips, he'll remember what your drinking! He does the best cocktails which you just gotta try!!

If there is one thing that you have to do while your here it's the Levante boat trips.
I did them after hearing good reviews, and found that everything I heard was true and even more. Captain Spyros is great and speaks very good English. He does two trips on his speed boat, one to see the turtles and one up the the shipwreck. The great thing is because he has a spped boat he gets places so quick, so see far more in just half the day! He lets women and children drive the boat and as it was our honeymoon, he let us sit right at the front of the boat by ourselves, it was incredible, and we both felt very lucky. Both trips are incredible! First we did the afternoon trip to see the turtles, he is very determined and wont leave till he has found one, then we stopped at turtle island which was beautiful, then went around to the Keri caves and unlike most boat trips he could get right inside them and in one of them he even let us jump off the boat and swim around in the cave - it was amazing! Before this trip we went on a glass bottom boat to do this same trip, it seemed a good idea and it was cheap, but the captian hardly spoke english, and although we got to see turtles through the glass, it wasn't anywhere near as good as seeing them surface! It was rushed and horrible and when they did stop for a swim it was in the middle of no where with the beach quite a distance and I thought I was going to drown! It was not a nice experience. Captain Spyros was great, they even had float as well as life jackets, so you could swim in the caves and it didn't matter that you were out of your depth!
It was very organised and laid back, we then stopped at banana beach which was really busy, quite a different experince, but on the trip there was a boat taking pictures, which he warns you about - make sure your waving as you get a chance to buy these pictures at the banana beach for half the price! This tip is great value for money and because he hasb't got a trip afterwards, he's in no great rush to get back!
The other trip is also great, except you have to leave at 8.30am, but it's well worth it, as he gets you to smugglers cove before any other boat, it was fantastic. We were ther for 40mins before the other boats arrived and when they do there are hundreds of people, so on this trip you feel like VIP's. It s great to get perfect photos with no one around! His boat also pulls right up onto the beach so it doesn't matter if you can't swim, where a lot of the boats don't and you have to swim a shore! We then look around the blue caves which are amazing and stopped at this little boat harbour with is lovely.
Both trips are 40 euros and are more expensive then the other trips, but there is a reason for this - you get what you pay for!!!! They are well worth the money and I would do them both again next year. I would however book them as soon as you get there, as they book up very quickly. You will find him at the harbour (go right out of the hotel and follow the road down to the beach and then follow it round to the left, you will then see the harbour and a board advertising the levante trips. Hopefully someone will be there or contact info will be on the board!

Also if you want to do scuba diving do it St Nicholas beach diving school, they will arrange pick up/drop off from your hotel, but they are english and are a proper padi centre, and you even get a certificate which is world wide known. They are fab!!

Overall the whole holiday was amazing and we re very glad we chose it for our honeymoon, we will definately be coming back!

My husband and i (age 26 and 27) have been to four of the greek islands now. We would not have chosen Zante knowing how commercial it is but were invited for a wedding. We choose the Contessina as we had, had enough of twin bedded rooms of low quality.
I emailed in avance to request a nelwy refurbished room with a balcony. After being slighty traumatised driving down the strip with copius amounts of bars, resturants and amusemant arcades we arrived at what appeared to be a lovely hotel, we recived nice cold orange juice and were given our key.
On entering the stairwell to the block the music from the bar was loud and clear right up to our bedroom door (I belive it was the vengaboys at the time!) On entering our room we were very pleased to find that we had a beautiful clean newly refurbished room with a king size bed, there is a big but! on going out on the balcony where we normally enjoy quite card games before going out we found we were right above the bar and the large subwoofer. Even when we shut the bedroom door and shutters you could hear every word of the music and feel the beat through the walls.
This hotel is not typically Greek they play loud English music from 10a.m till 12 at night (earliest) right into the pool area where all the bedrooms face onto. If you like quiet relaxing i suggest you either go to the chemist down the road and buy ear plugs (like we did) or request a room in the block furthest away, and possibly facing away from pool altough i did hear the cockeral once and that was quite loud.
The receptionist was very helpful and moved us as soon as possible to another newly refurbished king size room in the other block unfortunatly this was 8 days into our 11 night stay but we still had a nice 4 nights.
The sunbeds are rediculous there are signs everywhere saying no towels yet every body does it (90% English). You need to be up by 7.30 to get a good bed. Once again if you like reading a book on your sunlounger I would suggest the beach as much quieter and you always get a bed.
Overal once moved to a quieter room i really liked the hotel and it was very clean and seemed to try its best to cater for everybody.
If you find it too commerical like we did then turn right out of the hotel and head to the boomerang bar we had dinner there three times (which we never do but the greek food in Tsilvi is not great) and drunk in the bar there every night really nice and relaxing.
As the last post stated be very careful we had to pay 80 euros on our overweight baggage whoops! I would go back to the Contessina i think it would be a great place to bring kids as there is loads to do. If you like quiet though make sure you ask to be as far away from the bar as possible!

Travelled with my wife and five year old son. We wanted a nice pool, good beach, good choice of restaurants with childrens options, reliable weather and to see a turtle. WE GOT IT!
The pool is great ranging from about 1.2m to 2.4m. They allow inflatables. It was clean and warm. Sunbeds were always "booked" by 9am(normally towels and nobody) but it wasn't a real nuisance.

We had room 502 which overlooked the cockerel but with the balcony doors shut we didn't hear it. Room was a bit small but we only slept there and used the balcony in the evening...with a light that works! a rarity in our experience.

Staff worked hard. Not as much praise for rep Andy as other reviewers. We asked at the welcome meeting for car hire details which never appeared....we booked with hotel itself which was fine. On penultimate day he put up a note saying that Thomson rep has a card for sale for 15 euro which gives kids free meals in large number of restaurants in resort and in uk for 3 months. This would have saved lots of money had we known earlier.

Distance to beach 400m downhill. Flat sand entry to left where road forks. Slightly more risk of rocks (more fish) to the right. All manor of watersports available. The beach is long but not deep however we always managed to have room to play.

We went to Laganas 7 years ago and saw turtles every day while swimming. We went back twice this trip. Hired a pedalo for one hour on first day with one of us snorkelling close by all the time......no turtles.......2nd day hired it for 2 hours and saw turtle in about 6metres water. Tips.........for turtles go slightly earlier in season......hire a pedalo if you all have masks and watch where the glass bottom boats stop.....it works out cheaper and you can jump in with them.......Matthew our son was sooo impressed!
Laganas has a superb beach but after 6pm the clubs (on the beach) start up and the atmosphere and language plummet (speaking as a parent).

Restaurants........Tsilivi has a huge number within walking distance of Contessina. We doubled up on a couple only because we loved them so much.......Zeus.....good food and perfect for watching people.....The Med hotel was similar......Menir down hill from hotel was good food. The Boomerang (bottom of road from hotel on beach)....such a good spot and great food and friendly service that I would have complained had the service been fast! The waiters advised us (correctly) to order less...."you can order everything on the menu if you want but I'd rather you spent less and were happy". LOVED IT.
We shouldn't forget the actual hotel. Our brochure says it has no restaurant but the "snacks" they do until 6pm are well worth trying. The staff could not work harder to please and our highest award would go to LOLA.

We did the ZanteLevante speedboat trip booked on the harbour wall. 40 euro per adult but only 10 for kids. Fantastic. Unlike the bigger boats this gets right into the caves....all the kids and women get a chance to drive the boat (and you still get there!). You get to shipwreck beach before any of the bigger boats with hundreds on board clutter the view. Walk down the hill from the hotel.....bear left and you will find the rep on the harbour wall....where you get the boat from, about 8mins walk away.

We did the waterpark trip. We had a great day. Our son can swim well for five, but there are only limited slides for non swimmers......

Would I recommend the hotel and resort?........The only reason not to is that the price will go up if too many of you go!

After reading many reviews about this hotel, and thanks to those who added their reviews, what an amazing hotel, from the time we arrived we were greeted by Rosa with 4 long cold refreshing orange juices and then a full description of the hotel. We were shown to the rooms in which we did have refurbished rooms in the new block of the hotel which are the best we have ever been in,in greece. The army of maids of which they never seem to stop cleaning are a credit to this hotel and i have never witnessed cleaning of the parasols and sunbeds ever around the pool area, the room was cleaned every day with fresh sheets and towels and a never ending supply of loo roll at one stage had 4 rolls!!! In the room we had plasma tv, 3 proper beds in which are extremely comfy. The air conditioning and fridge are an extra charge, 11 euros a day for the aircon and 4 euros for the fridge. Breakfast fab which ranges from bacon, eggs etc to cereals, yoghurts etc. Diana and Rosa on reception are a credit to the hotel and are both extremely friendly and helpful and are interested in how your holiday is going, and nothing too much trouble. The rep Andy and also the one from Thompson are great they walk around the pool and find time in their day to stop and have a chat to you,and are both great at doing their job and they seem to be always there.Well, the weather was fantastic hot and sunny for the whole fortnight. The prices in the hotel for drinks around the pool are quite expensive 2 euros for a coke and 3.8 euros for a beer, and people do go to the supermarket to bring their own in, watch out contessina you have a captive audience dont out price yourselves!!! A big watch out is the airport as they have become very strict at over weight luggage and they do charge 11 euros for each 1 kilo over and they will not check your luggage in until you have paid the bill, and plenty of people were being hit by this, very embarrasing!!! All in all a fantastic holiday and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Just back from the lovely Contessina with two kids aged 12 & 14. Like most people enjoyed the nice cool drink on arrival from an easy trouble free transfer from the airport. Only downside I found that like most people did not get a refurbished room and felt slightly cheated and wonder if you travel with different tour operator you do get them. Had a slight moan about the size of bathroom as do not like sitting on loo with feet in the shower tray!!! However saying that the room was cleaned every single day with fresh towels and did overlook the pool area.

Ilias the barman was a hoot but purleeze no more Bob Marley or reggae music lol.

Pool area - most spotless pool area i have ever experienced these women were unbelievable, scrubbing down the tiles, sunbeds and the parasols.

Sunbeds - witnessed many greedy fellow travellers putting out towels at 3am much against hotel policy but nothing was ever done, however I didnt get up till 8 and still managed to find a bed easily

Breakfast - lovely with loads of choice to suit even the most fussy guest, my kids loved the melon and swiss roll especially.

Staff - very polite and courteous and helpful

Reps - have to say the two reps i met one from Thomas Cook (Andy) and Thomsons (Adam) were the most fantastic reps i have met in a long time. They actually came nearly every day unless they had airport duty or a day off and walked round pool and spoke to guests which I felt was great as most just sit inside at a table and try to flog you trips. Well done boys.

Restaurants - went to quite a few, enjoyed

The Med (free ice cream at end of meal) a bit slow but lovely food and staff very friendly, average prices
The Fish and Chip shop - cheapest meal I had and was scrummy and service was quick.
Giorgios - lovely and very busy sometimes you have to queue only downside I felt rushed as people were waiting for tables outside on street
Zeus - nice meal but a bit mean with portions - half a potato
Chinese/Indian (on same side as Giorgios) - absolutely beautiful meals, kids loved it, a bit more expensive but worth it.
Menirs - down the road from contessina, lovely meal and average prices.

Bars

Not much of a drinker but I did have a cocktail in the brothers but kids found it too loud but it seemed fun, kids loved the Jolly Rogers run by Kostas and his wife just down the road from hotel, lovely guy, cheap drinks and we had lunch there nearly every day lol.

If you are going out for a meal I would say best time is after 8 as the wasps have gone to bed then. We had a meal at the restaurant overlooking the sea, go down street and take a left and its the end one however we were plagued by wasps who sat on food and kids wouldnt eat, staff were a bit disinterested so we paid for uneaten meal and left not a nice experience.

If your looking for a lot of entertainment your not going to find it at hotel, but there is plenty to be had outside.

all in all we had a fantastic 2 wks and were so sad to go. hopefully we will have another 2 wks next year so if your going have a wonderful time and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of a lovely clean hotel with loads of bars and restaurants to choose from
