“The allure of bare feet & being still”
Reviewed 29 August 2013

Here’s a place in which to forget the bustling city & the formula of most coastal hotels. Don a kikoi, a hat, walk barefoot, be a lizard & gaze out over an infinity pool, swim at night- in your own time. Add to that, personally select your dinner- more than likely fresh seafood. Have your cottage chef & steward prepare & dish it up for you- when you like.
I've been returning to Kusini with family & friends for the past 4/5 years & continue to love this tranquil space. It’s allure lies in it’s stripped back simplicity & charm. I've stayed in both Pepo House & more recently Mashariki cottage, preferring the former, as it affords stunning views coupled with spacious layout. Thanks again, Pepo & Gris’.

I celebrated my birthday in the private cottage on the beach at Kusini. It was amazing experience, the chef was great. We got all the service and the feeling that we are all alone ! Thank you Gris and pepo !

Don't get me wrong, if you are looking for nice but basic cottages (no AC for example) Kusini Beach Cottages are a good choice. We have been going there for over 10 years so obviously we like it there. But no, we won't be going there again. First of all we feel that the recent price increases are not justified. You can find better places for less... And you won't have to deal with the manager. On first sight a nice, relaxed guy but once you get to know him clearly someone who has no clue about client management. The before last time we were there we made a reservation for 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids) and we were told that we would get a 3 bedroom place at the price of a 2 bedroom one. Very nice but kind of normal given that they were fully booked. I didn't make much if it at the time but did get annoyed when they kept on pointing our what a "huge" favor they had done us. This time we arrived an we were the only clients (low season). When we realized there were no other clients we asked if we could use Pepo Cottage which is larger and has a nice terras (ironically it's named after the owner/manager). We were bluntly told that we could definitely have it if we paid the difference. I was shocked and we decided to stay where we were given how expensive this place already is (even with a 20% discount for the low season it's still expensive) as we were not ready to add to our bill. So there you go... that's what you get for visiting a place 4 times. I don't think he even realized what he had done; this is just the general attitude at this place (other reviewers have confirmed this BTW). So if you still decide to go there, don't expect any favors.

Having lived 12+ years in Kenya and Africa, we have stayed at many houses and hotels on the Kenyan Coast. Kusini ranks among our favourites - simple yet stylish decor, excellent service and located on one of the most beautiful spots on Galu Beach. Our chef cooked such delicious food - with fresh sea food sourced from the local fishermen daily (crab, lobster, prawn, red snapper etc.). Our 2 small children loved the pool (which has a good shallow end for the smaller kids), riding camels on the beach, and collecting seashells and playing with the friendly dogs of the managers (Lucky being their favourite!). We stayed in the 2 room Kusini but had a look at the other houses - Pepo definitely is stunning with a large balcony overlooking the sea.

There is a comment on Tripadvisor saying there is no hot water - not true! Management also very helpful and for ex arranged a babycot for our youngest, helped with taxi transfers etc.

Can highly recommend Kusini for anyone looking for the privacy of villa style holidays - yet benefiting from the service of a full time chef and housekeeper. Located close to good restaurants on Diani Beach (Sails, Nomads, Ali Babours), the best italian ice cream bar (Leonardos), kite surfing, horse riding (Kinondo Kwetu), boutiques and grocery stores.
