“Relaxed and tidy accommodation”
Reviewed 30 September 2012

We had such a lovely time staying here.

The property is right on the beach with lovely shady areas.

The huts are simple, quaint and comfortable. They look and feel like getaway beach houses and I loved that.

The staff are very friendly. The property is patrolled by regular security. They have great local knowledge. And the 'sellers' on the beach don't bother Diani Beach Chalet guests because they've been told off too many times by 'Mama Kali', haha!

Tuktuks stop right outside. Easy access to restaurants and bars.

Beautiful beach location with that relaxed Kenyan charm.

Good value accommodation.

I stayed in in Diani Beach Chalets on the recommendation of a friend of mine who I had travelled with years before. My travelling philosophy is that there are tourists (who go places but want the same experience over and over again - same hotels, same amenities, etc.) and travellers (who go places but looking to experience what makes a place unique).

Diani Beach Chalet is geared for the travellers out there. First and foremost, the location is amazing - walk out of the front door of your chalet, down a few steps and you're on the most amazing beach that goes on forever.

They have a mix of accomodation, from small huts to three bedroom chalets. I stayed in one of the chalets with some friends, which also had a kitchen, a living room, a veranda and a hammock that overlooked the beach. In the morning, locals would come by our room to offer us fresh fish they had just caught, or fruit from local groves, at great prices. I honestly didn't know how good a pineapple was until I came to Diani. If you want something more, there are plenty of great restaurants around and the tuktuks always stop just outside the front of the property. There is also a spa next door, which I didn't use but was reliably informed is very, very good.

The living is simple but it's very clean and very relaxed. Yes, you do have to keep doors closed or the local monkeys will nick some grub or grab something shiny (I spent an hour chasing a monkey until he finally gave me back my glasses), but that is just part of the experience. The owner, Dot, will help with organising safari or any short trips you want to make; we headed down to Zanzibar for a few days, which was also amazing, and it was Dot who helps us get this organised.

I have travelled a fair amount and lived in a few different countries, but this trip was absolutely one of my favourites, and mostly because I had the good fortune to stay here.

Room Tip: The bandas are a great deal but if you are with a group, the chalets are the best deal. Loads of spa...

We stayed there during the rainy season, but as the temperatures are still great it didn't really matter. Though it was very humid and sticky at times but you can dress to that.
The chalet we stayed in was on the first floor and had a lovely balcony where we sat most mornings and evenings. It was very spacious and felt very safe (guard is present day and night). It's a good place to stay when you want to relax after backpacking. Tuktuks drive past on the main roads on a regular basis so it's easy to get to the local Nakumatt and other shops. When tides are low it's a lovely walk on the beach to get to water sports facilities or Ali Barbour's.

Electricity is not included but doesn't cost much extra. Warm water comes from the immersion heater and it's diluted sea water. Fresh water comes from a special tank which everyone is free to fill their jugs from.
Overall a good experience for backpackers!

Room Tip: Rooms near the beach may be the best option as you get the nice breeze. However if those are fully b...

Great place if traveling with kids. Chalets mostly set behind a lawn overlooking the beach with a couple set back amongst the trees missing the lovely sea breeze. Very basic but spacious with good verandas, living area and kitchen. After living out of a backpack it was great to have the space and be able to cook for ourselves for a little while. Kids (aged 8 and 13) spent all their time on the beach playing soccer with the beach boys. Beware the monkeys who come in the chalets looking for food when the doors are left open! Good security.

Room Tip: Try and get a chalet close to the beach with the sea breeze otherwise it is very hot and sticky and...
