“Fantastic ... the place to have a wonderful holiday!!”
Reviewed 1 August 2011

Having lived in Nairobi for 7 years (where we worked for a UK-based charity 1987 - 2004), we were fortunate to be able to holiday in Mombasa about three times a year. During this time, we tried a number of hotels along the coast but Leopard Beach was our all-time favorite, and one which, after our first visit, we always returned to.

After returning to the UK in 2004 we longed to return to Kenya as a family and were delighted to be able to do so in July 2011 with our sons currently aged 20, 18 and 15. Top of our list was the desire to return to Leopard Beach and we were fortunate to be able to spend a week there ... it lived up to all our memories and we had an absolutely fantastic holiday ... and we all agreed that we should not think of holidaying anywhere else but Leopard Beach in future! The food, views, service and accommodation were wonderful and the dedicated, cheerful staff worked very hard to ensure our stay was all that it should be. Having lived in East Africa for a number of years we are very careful about drinking bottled water; however, we have always eaten all the salads and fruit at Leopard Beach. We have stayed at Leopard on numerous occasions and have never had any stomach upsets - personally we would trust the hygiene standards at this hotel. The beach is excellent although the 'beach boys' can be a little trying; best advice is to ensure you wear 'reef' or diving boots (there are poisonous Stone Fish about) when walking out and to make a deal with one beach boy before you get too far in the walk. They are able to show you some interesting sights but don't believe all of their talk about sea snakes and harmful Sea Urchins!

We stayed in the Chui Cottages which have their own private gardens and superior sea views. My husband and the boys used the hotel's diving centre during the holiday and enjoyed a number of dives on the local reefs. I know it is often a gamble to return to a destination or hotel where you have had a tremendous time in the past. However, our stay at Leopard Beach met all of our hopes and aspirations. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: We have always stayed in the Chui Cottages and I feel that these are definitely the best option at t...

In general, Leopard beach is a fantastic hotel. Its the one place in Diani I know I can always count on for a relaxed holiday.
This time round, we were traveling with our baby for the first time and as usual, we experienced superb service. Our baby's needs were well taken care of including her food being ready in time as per request, the kiddy club keeping her busy when we needed a quiet time and a baby sitter readily available in the evening to watch over our girl after her dinner.
Our room was beautiful and with a small patio outside where we could sit and relax- but we spent most of our time at the beach anyway!

For the tree nights we stayed there, we had dinner at three different locations and this really helped spice up our holiday as it avoided boredom.

We love Leopard beach and cant wait until our next visit.

Room Tip: Our room was supeior and it had no view of the sea. Although we didnt mind as it was a beach holiday...

My biggest cautionary advice is the swimming pool, IT IS OF A VERY DANGEROUS DESIGN WITH THE SHALLOW SECTION IMMEDIATELY ADJOINING THE DEEP END WITHOUT A SLOPING INTRO'. IT DROPS TO 2.8M DEPTH DIRECTLY FROM A 1.2M DEPTH WITHOUT ANY WARNING!!! And I nearly drowned being a non-swimmer!!
Went and stayed there for a week attending a family wedding . The quality was overall of a high standard - around three/ four star I guess but in my room the bathroom was a little disappointing with a walk in shower. Staff were attentive, very friendly and willing to help if needed. Food was fairly comprehnsive in choice, well prepared & tasty ( most of the time ) with hygiene standards being obviously displayed with gloved servers, clean counters and many dishes being cooked right in front of you. However take caution as some of the guests did get stomach bugs. I luckily did not but I was careful , avoiding salads, ice in drinks and using only botteld water in room tea making etc.In balance however many didnt take the same care but remained unaffected by stomach upsets.
Oh yes, look out for the large spiders hanging from the trees near the walkways... and the monkeys which do enter rooms looking for food if doors are left open.
Marks out of ten ... 7/ 10 ( they lose points on the pool. )

Dear j1gab,

Thank you for feeback and compliments on the service staff and hotel product as a whole. We hosted a very successful big wedding beginning of the season of which we believe will be what you are referring too as part of the invited wedding guest.

Prior the wedding , all guests had room options and booking were made accordingly as per guest preference. In addition to this, all bathrooms were renovated in May/June 2011 in standard, superior, cottages and suites and appointed with eco smart friendly showers. Only the honeymoon and executive suites and villas have sunken jacuzzis and or with power showers with information shared all along. We would have been glad to offer the latter rooms if you required a bathroom with such facilities, however that was not the case in your booking thus we fulfilled our services as per contracted for.

It is not only shocking to read your comments but alarming too on their exaggeration. Kindly note both our swimming pools had and have clear depth marking on the exterior surround in very big writing something of which you must have seen. Secondly on the interior of the pool, the floor tiling towards deep end is of a different color and slope too. For all guests who do not know how to swim like it were in your case, we recommend to inquire for assistance from our professional and qualified pool attendants who do and usually provide for swimming lessons for willing guests who ask of this. You will agree it is very difficult for one to ascertain or question a guest swimming ability if the guest does not willingly ask for assistance/guidance.

During the wedding we hosted a number of private and exclusive functions from lunches, to cocktail reception and dinners in different venues, with varied entertainment and pre-selected menus as per chosen by the wedding party. The wedding party inclusive of the bride and groom, parents, extended family and friends were all in close contact with the hotel management and staff responsible for the execution of the wedding functions. There was not a single day or time where we heard or got reports of stomach upsets as allegedly stated by you. Contrary to that, we only received very positive comments and compliments on the food variety offered during the 3 days functions, outstanding and excellent service exceeding over and above their expectations.

Kenya is blessed with beautiful flora and fauna as evidently seen. Monkeys who are regarded as wild animals and have a right to live within their natural habitat of which not only few are in Leopard Beach but also along Diani beach owing to the lush vegetation and trees among other tropical insects. These are also a touristic attraction and most guest appreciate them. Nevertheless we have information in guest rooms and notices in applicable guest public areas offering information on this on the do's and don't pertaining to monkey behaviours.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope during your next stay with us, you will freely communicate to us in regard to your room preference and also offer us a second chance to assist you where in delivery of our services.

Sincerely,
Chui Management

We arrived there on the 2nd of July and we were there till the 9th of July. The day we arrived, we were asked to wait and we ended up waiting 2 hours before we got our room because they were giving us an upgrade. We had booked a standard room but they gave us a garden view superior room. So, the wait was fine:) The staff was very nice and maybe a tad too overfriendly. However, they were professional enough. The rooms are neat and decent but certainly not 5 star . However, the food was good, the staff nice and the resort looked very nice on the outside. So, it can be arguably called a 5 star resort. I do not understand the negative reviews some people give this resort because we really did not find anything wrong with the resort other than the fact that one has to pay to use the gym ( which is understandable in a way because the gym is small) and the fact that the rooms were not really 5 star though very decent. There were no mosquitoes in the room and hardly any in the resort other than maybe near the entrance at dusk. It is more often than not windy or rather there is a nice breeze blowing so there are hardly any mosquitoes. The beach near the hotel is nice too . The resort in general looks classy and given what I heard about other resorts from people who stayed in different resorts in that area, I think this is probably the best resort on Diani Beach. Go for it without blinking an eye if you want to stay in a resort on Diani beach. Tip: Book yourselves a superior room or better because I am not sure how a standard room would be.

I was at Leopard Beach in December 2010 and was very disappointed. I am a very discerning traveler and only want and expect the best. You have many more options on the beautiful Kenyan coast to even consider this place.

I have heard that the property has just recently been (much needed) renovated which might change some of my feelings about this place. Although, there are conditions aside of the hotel that would still keep me from coming back.

This was our last trip to beautiful Diani before moving back stateside and having stayed at Leopard Beach previously, we thought we would go back again. Someone had warned us that the hotel had recently undergone reservations, but it did not prevent us from going. Initially, it was obvious that the hotel had not completed it's renovations when we arrived. Despite newly remodeled rooms(evident in the new bathroom design and decor), we had mildewed towels in our room and you could tell that there was work being done in different areas of the hotel(loud drilling, hammering, and work crews here and there carrying equipement, etc...). We spoke to the manager that it should not have been obvious that there was work being done...and they should have been ready for business when they reopened. However , despite the little hiccups at the beginning, it seemed that by the second day things got on track and we ended having a very nice , memorable holiday. The staff were professional and ready to please , something we have always liked about this resort and the restaurant /spa were really nice. The resort even treated all the tables at dinner a complimentary bottle of wine for being the first guests after reopening , which was a really nice touch. I think once the renovations are complete in all areas, this resort could potentially be a top notch place. Overall we enjoyed being in such a magical , beautiful setting and we hope to return one day.
