We stayed at this hotel in April 2012 .The staff are very helpful ,they will look after you! There is a wide choice of food available and if you still require anything not on the menu the food manager and the chefs will endeavour to meet your requirements. There was 5 of us including 3 children and we all never got bored of the food. This just added the icing on the cake !.The hotel has a fabulous swimming pool ,which leads directly to the lovely beach. All the facilities are kept very clean and the whole holiday was a fabulous experience and we would go back.

Room Tip: Heard that other guests staying on level 1 and 2 did not have mosquitos !

My Wife and I had our Easter Vacation in the Southern Palms Beach Resort and it was a great vacation.
Lots of activities, big swimming pool, great food, welcoming stuff specially the F&B manager who was looking after small details ...
We went as well to the Pirate Beach Party, we enjoyed our time there and we had one of the best Sea food Grills, yummmm

This is our third time to Kenya and the second time to this hotel our first was in Nov '07, i did not write a review then so i will make amends and write one now...it also gives me the opportunity to compare then and now.
We stayed for two weeks half board from the 13th April which was £200pp cheaper than our last stay 5 years ago in November ? The reason ? We did'nt do our homework and April/May is the 'Long Rain' season....oops ! However having said that over the 14 days we had three and a half days worth of cloud one of which it did rained on and off but the rest were sunny (the temperature was still hot and humid even on cloudy days so did'nt spoil our holiday and if there was heavy rain it was overnight when it did'nt matter....)
Ok back to the Hotel.....From the Airport to the hotel you will realize the poverty in Kenya it does give you a reality check......However once the main gates are opened to allow your coach into the hotel you are transported into a little oasis, beautiful thatched roofs with woooden supports, waterfeatures, ponds with fish, birds, monkeys all very pleasing to the eye.
The rooms themselves although not luxurious they are clean and tidy and perfectly acceptable they have a safe (payable as an extra around £24 for the two weeks) air con, tv, hairdryer, kettle, and a fridge which i'm not too sure if you get if you are all inclusive ?
Outside you have probably the largest free form swimming pool in Kenya which is in the middle of the resort being overlooked by all rooms and is divided into two, one a fresh water and the other i believe slightly salty ? there is also a swim up bar in the fresh water pool.
The beach has sunloungers with thatched brolly's and security guards patrolling the stretch of the 'Southern Palms' resort to keep the beach sellers away from you (these beach sellers can be very annoying at times so its nice to know as long as you don't go out of the security corden you are pretty much left alone :)
The resort has four main eating areas firstly (and i think the most impressive) is the main Buffet area for breakfast/lunch/dinner its a large circular thatched building which once inside and look up you will see the beautiful wooden beams supporting the roof and the wonderful lighting...The food here is self service and freshly cooked and will satisfy all but the very fussiest of eaters.
Secondly there is the snack bar near the beach serving food from about midday to early evening.
Then in the evening as well as the Buffet restaurant you also have a choice of a seperate grill restaurant next to the pool which is waiter served although technically it is outside it does have a roof covering it and you finally have the Italian restaurant which is on the roof terrace near the evening entertainment area which again is waitered and has no roof so you can gaze at the stars !!
The grill and Italian have to be booked in advance if you wish to use them and the hotel likes you to book at least the day before......Also note that Men have to wear long trousers at any restaurant in the evening so pack light cotton type trousers as thick heavy trousers in the evening heat would be uncomfortable !
So all in all and comparing to last time this is still a beautiful looking resort with very good food an staff so i would still recommend anyone to stay here although the nationality seems to have changed as the last time it was a mainly British resort but now it is nearly all German ?......... I also have a few minor complaints.... On our first visit in Nov 07 there were lots of brightly coloured lizards running around the resort....unfortunately now there seem to be a very big cat population and no lizards, I think you can draw you own conclusion to where the lizards have gone ! I am a cat lover myself but there are too many of them at this resort they are not neutered so keep breeding resulting in very hungry cats which pester you at meal times.
Secondly unless you are all inclusive which worked out £400pp more (which we did'nt feel was worth it) the drinks wether it was water or alcoholic are extortionate ! For example water whch you are suppose to drink at least two litres a day there works out at 250ks (approx £2) for a litre bottle so £4 a day x 14 days = £56pp extra....a beer £3, a gin and tonic £4.50......so your bill can soon tot up ! There is a solution if you are half board which is to either bring some duty free alcohol with you or if you go out of the resort (daytime only) turn left and stay on the left to avoid the sellers stalls on the right........and walk for about half a mile you will find either the 'Boutique' a large white building on the right (opposite the diani reef hotel) which sells sealed 5 litre bottled water for 100ks (80p) £4.80 for the 14 days !! or a few buildings up there is a small supermarket selling most things you may require including beer £1 a bottle and spirits.....so buy what you need at these places and take them back to the hotel.....We topped up the resort 1 litre bottle of water we did buy there with the water from our 5 litre supermarket everynight and used this at meal times so not to raise suspicion which worked a treat :)
If you are up for it and its not too hot (again daytime only) you can keep walking past the Boutique and small supermarket for another mile and you will come to the 'Barclays' centre on the right which as well as the bank there are about 6 shops inside which sell all the wood carvings you could ever want the staff do not hassle you like the outside stalls along the way but remember to haggle as my wife bought a carving which was first priced at 8000ks (£64) which with a bit of haggling she got down to 3000ks (£24).....Opposite the 'Barclays' centre is a BIG supermarket equivalent to a large Tesco's/Asda and there is also a chemist next door....Taxi's are available from the hotel if you dont fancy the walk or if you decide to eat out in the evenings.
Would i come back for a third visit ? You never know ?..... we have been recommended the 'Baobab' resort about 4 miles further down the Diani beach buy the Thompson rep who says the food/resort is even better than the 'Southern Palms' so i think we will try that one next time ?

This is our second year back at southern palms.Excellent hotel, friendly staff.Special thankyou to Richard our room attendant looked after all our needs, Omar on the beach, a smile to greet you in the morning and made sure you were okay on your sun beds. The security guards made sure the beach boys did not hassle you.We would recommend J T safaris if you want a hassle free safari. Booked in the UK via e-mails with Julius, excellent service. If you book safari with holiday rep you have to vacate your room.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for sea view room.

We stayed for 3 nights together with the group after 1 week safari. Overall impression about the hotel is good, particularly the location and the excellent food (very wide choice of high quality fruits, etc.). Also the premises - pool, reception, restaurants were clean and nice. The living room had a look as been overused, but sleep quality was good. There was a problem with the fridge which was not solved (compressor was working, but producing no cold at all). Also a tricky switch of the air conditioning in the room was a problem in the first evening, but later it was fixed. Staff was very kind and helpful.
So if you understand that it is impossible to want everything to be absolutely perfect, it is a good choice to stay for the rest at the beach of Indian ocean.
