We had a horrible holiday – Myself, wife and 3 year old daughter.
Southern Palms is a very pleasant resort, staff very accommodating and the service is great as well as food. It’s also great value and nice – EXCEPT:
The hotel allows serious unsafe practices in allowing Kenya’s ‘Sky Diving Club’ to use the hotel as their choice ‘party’ venue. In particular the use of the beach as the landing zone for their highly adrenalin fuelled fun (often drunk). It’s a circus.
In our stay most people tolerated Sky Divers, however in a very near accident one lost control whilst landing. He missed impact within 1 meter of my 3 year old daughter. All people were shocked and appalled. He could have seriously injured her, if not killed her. (I was told from the caring hotel staff that a child was killed on a beach in Kenya within the last 10 years from a landing accident from a SKy Diver)
The hotel has a close ‘business’ relationship with the Sky Diving club in Kenya. No action was taken by the hotel manager to improve safety, he was ambivalent.
I expressly requested the Police to be called as a result of threatening behaviour from the Sky Diving Club Owner (he couldn’t empathise with my balanced response on the near accident). The hotel promised but failed to involve the Police. The reminder of our stay was unpleasant with fear of further the threats of the Sky Diving Club Owner to my wife and child in particular. The hotel manager showed no care.
The Sky Diving Leader is aggressive with no care for life other than his pack. The hotel Manager is no better, caring for commercial profit above the safety of his guests.
Kenya has a wealth of beautiful landscape and wildlife, safari is a great way to experience this, however I would strongly recommend rejecting Southern Palms as a base, or any other resort where Kenyan Sky Divers might be operating.
I hope this is of help for anyone considering a holiday in Kenya.

Dear Deylan,

Greetings to you and your family, we are pleased to note that you were happy with Southern Palms especially when you say in your own words that Southern Palms is a very pleasant resort with very accommodating staff, great service and food, that all these met with your absolute approval lifts our spirit.
Our general reviews as anyone who knows the far reaching reputation of Southern Palms resort and the high esteem in which the hotel is held by the thousands of guests who vacation with us each and every year will be aware the situation in which you raise is an isolated incident and regrettably it is beyond our power.

Unfortunately, the beach is not owned by the hotels. All across the coast line the beach is considered a public area or space, we have no control over any activities that happen thereof, we understand your frustration and sincerely regret any inconveniences caused.
We are glad that it all ended well with you and this did not spoil the rest of your holiday.

We look forward to when you grace us with your presence in future.

Thank you and warm regards,

Betty.

(5 star) I would like to share my experience that I and my girlfriend had at the southern palms beach resort in Kenya.

Firstly the service provided by staff was second to none, all the staff made us feel so very welcome on arrival. On arrival we where provided with refreshing drinks prepared in a fresh coconut, along with being provided an refreshing ice cold towel soaked in aloe Vera to freshen up.

The service really is second to none, you are treated like royalty from the moment you arrive at the resort by all.

The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily, you have the added treat and element of surprise with the monkeys visiting your balcony, which adds to the magic. The hotel is located right on the coast giving you the feeling of being lost in your very own tranquil dreamy paradise, the views are magical.

There is plenty of choice when it come to food, the buffet changes regularly so doesn't become boring, besides you have the added options of the Italian or grill restaurants.

During our stay we went the full moon party where you are entertained with an amazing acrobatics show, live music and traditional Masai Mara dancers. Also during our stay we were treated to a relaxing massage at the spa.

The hotel is located conveniently to the local air strip which makes it ideal for going on safari, which I highly recommend. We stayed at the governors camp in the Masai which was amazing. It is an adventure which will last with us forever. On route you fly over Kilimanjaro before landing bang in the middle of the lions and big five. I can't recommend Kenya enough, the country has so much to offer, from the coast to the safari element.

I can't praise the hotel enough, above all and what really made our stay magical was the staff at the southern palms. I can't thank them all enough for making our stay one of a life time. I left Kenya gaining great memory's and friends.

Finally I would like to personally thank Evans who really does strive to make your stay so relaxing, he works tirelessly providing drinks throughout the day, always having a smile on his face, a real gentle giant.

Sydney who works in the restaurant is such a gentleman and looked after are every needs, he treated us like royalty, every day having our table set up and so friendly and welcoming.

Jeffery on the fruits is such a talent, a real artist and again a great friend gained as to so many others at the resort.

Ali who looks after the pool area is a credit to the hotel and what it has to offer. He is a man of the world working long hours to ensure your stay is enjoyable. Again such a gentleman.

Finally Husain who over looked our every need, very friendly and welcoming. Ensuring we were always happy enjoying our stay.

I miss everyone of you at the resort, and hope to one day return. Such a magical beautiful place.

Thank you so much guys, :-))))))))

We agree Kenya is a blessed country and has a lot of potential, Safaris to the wild are a must do, to see the wildlife, we are happy that you enjoyed your visit to the famous Maasai Mara.

This is my second time at the southern palm beach resort.
I love the pool area and the garden around it. The smell and colour of the flowers are beautiful.
The beach is also very nice. Sun-beds and very white sand and not too many seaweeds. (Seaweeds is a problem in some Kenyan beaches) on the beach turn left and walk to the Congo river 10 minutes. Amazing. The rooms are a bit dated and tired now but acceptable
The buffet has got a good variety of food. Loved the Indian corner. Lovely and tasty curries
As for other review you need to wake up early and reserve a bed by the pool or on the beach. The pool/beach attendants put towels on bed as probably they get tips from guests this is very annoying as some bed were empty for most of the day. Feeded back to management at reception.
Night animation was a bit poor. Last year we had attractions evert evening but this time disco every night. Booooring. Maybe the are cutting corners also. The staff are really friendly and everyone says jambo. Over all we had a great time and would not hesitate to go back.

Room Tip: Away from the pool area were they do disco at night. Music stop at 23.00.

Dear Fabrizio,

Hallo Fabrizio, it is a pleasure to read from you, we are glad to hear that this was your 2nd time visit with us, that tells us we have been excellent with you twice and definitely excited we will be seeing you again.
We are happy that you loved the hotel grounds and pools, the beautiful beaches and the walks to Congo river, the good variety of food especially the famous Indian corner. Despite the animation nights programe which you did not fancy, usually we have shows from 9:30 pm to 10:30pm after which we then have house disco for 30 minutes and the house goes to sleep, we will be looking at ways to improve the shows as well as the rooms. Other than that we are glad that you went ahead and enjoyed your holiday to the fullest.

we cannot wait to see you again.

Thank you and kind regards,

I'm at the start of my second week here in Diani, the service in the hotel is the best I've ever seen,an army of very welcoming friendly staff all pleased to help you with anything you need. The grounds are kept in beautiful conditions and the pool is enormous. I love the food,a huge selection, its hard not to overeat, served in five restaurants. For excursions and safari I would recommend Harry at Oranje tours a hundred yards up the road for a great price and satisfaction. If you are undecided which hotel to stay at come here, its wonderful.

The pool area and exteriors of this hotel are really nice. The rooms however, are old and worn down. They appear dark with old furniture and are really small (also the bath rooms). The food is very good - great variety and excellent choices (try the Indian corner). What I did not like too much was the fact that the waiters reserved the best dinner tables for guest by placing water bottles for a small tip, so when you get there the choice is already limited unless you play the same game. There are also far too few sunbeds on the beach. If you do not get there by 7.00 am, no chance to find one with a bit of shade. Getting cold drinks at the pool bar is also quite difficult because the staff keeps the fridge door unnecessarily long open so it never really cools down properly. The focus of the hotel is also on action, animation, noise - so great for people who like it but nothing for couples looking for a bit of piece. In the whole business center there was only one pen and the lady was not really very friendly. Otherwise the staff was very nice.

Room Tip: No way to sleep before 11.00 am if you have a room looking towards the pool because the music is far...

Dear Manuela E,

Greetings Manuela and thanks for your review and despite the negative
comments we were happy to learn that the high standard of our food coupled
with the variety of choice met with your complete approval.

We have very, very few complaints about the accommodation, of course plans are underway for a few touch ups here and there, but you
are entitled to your opinion.

Regarding your comments about the reservation of tables in the dining room
at the time of your visit there were very many repeat guests, most of whom
are aged and have walking aids. Because of their incapacity, we try to place
them as near to the entrance as possible so they do not cause any
inconvenience to other guests. Most visitors understand this situation but
sadly it makes a few people resentful because the reserved tables are
perceived to be in the best locations.

As far as your comments regarding the business centre is concerned, we would
like to stress that our colleague there did all she could to meet your
requirements even going so far as to offer you the use of the centre's
computer for free as there was apparently a problem with your own laptop. It was
clear that the connection problem did not lie with us as other users were
experiencing no difficulties at all. And you can be assured that her
friendly and helpful manner has often been remarked upon by other guests.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forwards to another visit with you.

Thank you and kind regards,

Betty.

Thanks to all the staff who are so warm and frendly and make you feel so special and always have a smile on their face. We admire how hard all the staff work. Good variety and choice of breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel is very clean. Good location on the beach. Private Security staff at the hotel are all friendly and they do a excellent job securing the guests and hotel grounds. Went on 3 day safari who we booked with Jonthan on the beach front and hightly recommend his company and experiance driver who had great knowledge on safari tour. We would stay here again if we visit Dani resort again. Patrick and Olive.
