We recently returned from a 2 week stay at the Papillon Reef Hotel. We had a very good holiday at what was a very clean, efficient, friendly hotel. All the staff from the gardeners, roomboys security guards, waiters and bar staff were friendly and service was excellent. The food was plentiful tho a little repetitive at times but all the more reason to explore nearby restaurants like the African Pot and Forty Thieves. Also the drinks at the hotel were nt brilliant but beer and wine very good. ,All staff went out of their way to make sure that we had a good time especially Duncan the waiter, Fred, Mack, Commando at the bar, julius on reception.....cant mention all of them. They are all good ,hard working people and we felt that they deserved tipping and gave them pencils , T-shirts , flip-flops etc solely because they did nt expect them. Just get to know their names and you'll have a great time and lots of laughs. It would be a good idea for them to wear name labels as you just cant remember all their names!!
We stayed in the beachfront rooms at a slightly higher cost, but well worth it, just to have the amazing views of the sea, and also what was going on on the beach. Large room and large bathroom with fridge.
We went out everyday walking or taking the local buses, without a problem. You've just got to be aware of who and whats going on around you.
We went to the very small snake farm in Diani but well worth the visit and the staff so informative.
Our 3 day safari was booked with Julius at JT safaris, who gave us a great deal and made sure we had good rooms at our lodges. Special thanks goes to Simon our driver/guide - request him- he was amazing and we saw all of the big 5 except the Rhino, and we always seemed to be the first of all the safari vans to be where the animals were. Also Simon was a mind of information on everything from politics, religion, animals, birds and geography. I dont think we stopped talking for the 3 days spent in Tsavo east and west.
After our safari Julius presented us with wooden carvings and also gave us a free trip to a local village and school. When we return to Kenya I wont hesitate in booking another safari with julius and the girls in the office. To be honest they were the only people that offered us a good service without expecting huge tips etc. They're sole aim was for us to have a good trip and be able to recommend the company to others.
We felt that the downside of the holiday was the expectance of tips, even including customs
on arrival and departure , so that they would nt search your suitcases. Also at many of the markets the prices were very expensive, and I know you have to barter but many wood carvings can be found cheaper in Athens. If prices were more logical then I'm sure people would buy more!! There's only so much bartering you can do in such heat!!!
We will be returning to Kenya and to Papillon Reef one day and hope that all the staff we met are still there. The holiday was all what we expected and more. Thank you Papillon Reef.
