“We loved our stay at Villa Maridadi”

The villa is nicely settled in a very green environment, so it is quiet and secluded.
The housekeeper Margareth was very friendly, and we allways saw her with a smile.
Also every day, the pool was cleened by Dennis the gardener. I very much liked the privacy wich was very important for us.
Our cook Iddi prepared us good meals, aswell fish or meat ...
Every night we felt very safe thanks to the nightgard.
The only remark: the villa is situated around 300m from the main gate, and since "tuktuk" are not allowed inside Msitu Kwetu, it was a long heavy walk with the shopping, especially when it rained ..

How easy was it to book the property? How helpful were the directions to the property?

Dear Luc
Many thanks for your review, I am very pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and everything was up to your expectation. With regard to tuk tuks, it's my understanding that they are allowed in, if guests have heavy shopping but I certainly will check this out when I am there, very soon. Many thanks and best wishes Margaret Tomkins Owner

“Change in staff roles and attitude is essential”
Reviewed 10 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

We have just spent a week at Villa Maridadi, Diani, which is a second/third-row property from the beach. Our group comprised four adults, all working professionals, together with our Golden Retriever pup – permission from the owner was sought and granted for the pup at the time of booking.
While the Villa is well equipped and fairly well laid out, our stay was greatly marred by the attitude of the maid, who, we were informed, also doubles up as a ‘property manager’. As residents in Kenya, this is not our first time to opt for high/medium-end self-catering accommodation at the Coast together with our puppy, including renting a villa within the same Msitu Kwetu estate in October last year. Also, as residents in Kenya, our expectations of services provided by household staff are far different to those who visit Kenya as tourists. When a property advertises that it provides a maid, one does expect that this would include the daily basic cleaning of the property and other associated routine duties, such as washing of clothes, ironing, etc., (as advertised) particularly when cleanliness is a priority and not an option in a hot and humid climate. However, this was not the case: the sheets in the upstairs bedrooms were not changed for four nights (from the time of check-in) once downstairs, with the maid coming in around 10 a.m., quickly using the vacuum cleaner around the house and then spending over an hour sitting outside in the carport on her mobile phone in full view of guests, and then leaving a little around noon for the day! The house was not mopped or furniture dusted either, apart from just once in the middle of the week – this too, after I had drawn her attention to it the day before, to which her response was that ‘the owner had told her not to mop the house until after we had left’, i.e., three days later! In addition, the maid insisted on having the gardener with her to ‘clean’ the rooms and tidy the beds (rearranging the pillows and folding the sheet which serves as a blanket), an unacceptable arrangement which we have not witnessed before – protocol needs to be observed in relation to household staff accessing sleeping quarters. The property is not that big to warrant the maid requiring the assistance of the gardener just to straighten the sheets and to vacuum the rooms! Ironing washed clothes, a service that is said to be provided here, also did not take place.
On our second day, the owner, who lives in the UK, called us to politely request that we should not allow our puppy to get into the swimming pool because of his fur (he jumped into the pool while we were swimming!), which was collecting at the bottom and, thus, affecting the pool cleaning – which was fair enough, and to which we obliged/apologised. Being the extremely hot season, our puppy spent most of the time in the coolest part of the house, on the stone floor, where he could remain cool. Being very playful, on occasion he has jumped on the bed (downstairs) – however, he was certainly never encouraged to do so, particularly since the owner had requested this at the time of booking. Since he is an indoor pet, he is always kept meticulously clean, (washed - and fur trimmed - several times during our stay, particularly after visiting the beach), is fully house-trained and not destructive, but when the owner reiterated we should aim to keep him off the beds/furniture, we willingly obliged and respected her wishes – with a more watchful eye over our playful and much-loved pup.
Had it not been for the excellent cook we hired on arrival (this does not come with the services on offer by the Villa), our stay at Villa Maridadi would have certainly been a nightmare. The kitchen area requires essential daily cleaning (counters wiped and floor mopped, bin emptied, etc.) particularly due to the heat and the fact that guests tend to purchase fresh fish, which is easily available – attracting an invasion of flies, if not kept clean. The maid did not clean nor mop the kitchen during our stay - this was done, thankfully, by the cook, and the bin cleared by the gardener, on his arrival at 7.30 the next morning.
This is the first self-catering accommodation where cleaning material for the house is not provided (i.e., Harpic, disinfectant, etc., for the toilets/bathrooms). While cleaning material is mentioned on Villa’s advertisement, we assumed, as is everywhere else, this to mean detergents, dishwashing liquid, etc. for our personal use. As a result, none of the bathrooms/toilets were washed/mopped/cleaned - despite our eventually purchasing the cleaning material - up to the time of our departure.
To add insult to injury, the maid (aka the ‘manager’) was overheard ‘reporting’ to the owner over the phone about the copious amount of ‘dog fur flying all over her legs, making it impossible for her to clean the villa’ (an absolutely ridiculous claim because dogs, particularly long-haired breeds, do moult a little when in hot places but certainly not to extent that she claimed, and which can easily be swept up from the stone floor with a broom). Furthermore, she told the owner ‘that ‘they’ were here for one more day only, Friday, after which they leave’ – in other words, we were leaving very soon. In addition, we overheard her lying to the owner that we had not signed the ‘arrival guest sheet’ – this was done by us immediately on arrival, which the maid put away in the kitchen drawer on the second day. Such a conversation smacks of gross rudeness, disrespect and unprofessionalism towards clients, particularly since our stay had been paid for in full via TripAdvisor (not a small amount and in a foreign currency) in advance. As guests, if something was amiss on our part, we would have certainly been accommodating to learn about it and would do our best to rectify any problems. On our second last day, the maid was overheard speaking in disparagingly racial terms in Kiswahili about the ‘guests from Nairobi’. We have never witnessed this in any hotel or private rental property and have been left quite shocked at how thoroughly mismanaged this Villa is, that a ‘manager’ could think it appropriate to speak this way.
Having seen that there has already been a similar complaint in January about the maid from a previous guest on the property Facebook page, it seems that these issues have not yet been addressed. It appears that there is no job description for the roles of ‘maid’ and ‘manager’, the combination of which is untenable when one person is carrying out both roles, and ego tends to be inflated (a ‘huge chip on her shoulder’ to quote a prior review from January). The role of a real ‘property manager’ in the hospitality industry would have included ensuring guests are comfortable at all times and excellent public relation skills – these are, certainly, very lacking.
We have stayed in a similar property on this same Estate (Msitu Kwetu) – with our pet – an excellent and memorable stay with a professional caretaker who, in the absence of the UK-based owners, took the time and trouble to ensure we were comfortable and with property staff who were cheerful and friendly, did all to ensure our needs were met and the property kept immaculate by the attending maid. The only reason we could not return to the same villa this time was purely because the owner was on safari and, hence, unreachable at the time of booking, or this would have been our first choice.
The owner of Villa Maridadi would do well to enlist the advice of such high standard holiday rentals with regards to how they manage their properties in Kenya. While the owner was very responsive in communication and seems like a lovely person, we feel that she is being thoroughly let down in her absence. As a family, we did not enjoy our time here after our first day, it being tense and very uncomfortable whenever the maid was present – certainly not value for money considering that this was a much anticipated holiday from work. Had we seen the prior guest’s review in January, it is doubtful that we would have come here. I would not currently recommend Villa Maridadi, if the status quo is maintained: maid/manager carrying out two mutually exclusive roles. However, I have no hesitation in commending the well-equipped property and communication with the owner, in addition to the very friendly and helpful gardener, security guard and cook. We certainly will not be returning – there is better managed accommodation elsewhere in Msitu Kwetu that is well deserving of being represented in the Kenyan hospitality industry.

Dear Sylvia Fernandes-DeMela
Thank you for your review, although it is very disappointing. It clearly states on the website that cleaning materials, toilet paper, washing up liquid, toiletries, must be paid for by the guests, which is quite normal here in Europe & other cottages in Kenya. Dogs will no longer be allowed at Villa Maridadi, as the pool pump needed to be repaired twice at my expense due to dog hair blocking the filter. i did not know your dog was a puppy, as I was told the dog was well behaved! With regards to the maid /manager, many previous guests have like her and previous reviews reflect this. I am truly sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at Villa Maridadi but hope that future guests will, as they have done in the past. Many thanks and best wishes Margaret Tomkins Owner Villa Maridadi

We had a great stay: the villa is very comfortable and well kept, and in a very secure area. Its a good location, with the beach only across the road. The owner was very responsive and accomodating, which we've really appreciated. Just beware, as flagged by others that the compound is small and that staff is very present. If you want quiet and privacy, this is not the best place to pick!

“Wow what an amazing villa!”
Reviewed 5 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Villa Maridadi is a stunningly beautiful villa in a stunningly beautiful part of the world. The three bedrooms all had king size beds and the furniture / bathrooms are of very high quality. There is a great sitting area on the balcony and nice outside dining table and seat downstairs.

The pool and gardens were immaculately maintained by Dennis who came all day every day! We were also spoilt with our own maid and at night own personal security guard!

The villa is on a secure complex just across the road from Diani Beach which must be one of the finest beaches in the world. White sand and sparklingly clear water - you couldn't ask for better. We went on two boat trips (booked with the locals on the beach) which were amazing. The glass bottom boat trip took us to a little island that appears only during low tide. The snorkelling was fantastic. So good we booked an all day trip to Wasini Island the next day where we saw dolphins and snorkelled over coral relief which was out of this world. Another sand island appeared at low tide which just felt amazing to be standing on in the middle of the ocean! Absolute heaven.

Diani Beach has lots of great places to eat at very reasonable prices. We used a mixture of a hire car for a couple of days, Tuk Tuks and taxis. The people were very friendly although the beach sellers were a little annoying after you had been asked to buy something fifty times! You do feel sorry for them though as it is obvious the people do not have a lot of money.

All in all a fantastic holiday - I haven't mentioned the three days safari we did first that was also amazing! We will definitely return to Villa Maradadi in the future - but for two weeks next time. Thank you Margaret for all your help and advice and a great holiday - it was much appreciated.

“Fantastic experience”

My husband, myself and our three boys had a wonderful stay at Villa Maridadi, the house was beautiful and well looked after, the staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Margaret who gave us good advice on where to go and suggestions on what to do. The shops are very handy and easy to get to. We didn't hire a car although there is one available at the house, as most places were either within walking distance or close enough to use the local Tuk Tuks which stop outside the complex and are cheap and a fun experience in their own right. We used a driver recommended to us by the owner for occasional longer trips or for going out in the evening, which was very reasonable. The house is close to a lovely beach and my kids loved having their own pool of which they made a great deal of use. It was our first time in Kenya and we found the people very friendly and helpful. I would definetly recommend staying here and next time we come to Kenya we will be back. Thank you for a lovely stay.
