Kinondo Poa is an amazing value for money: a beautiful landscaped garden with nice cottages a few meters from the beach. With its price, it is a steal: Kinondo Kwetu is literally next door, and while it is markedly more upscale, it costs almost 4 times more and opens up on the same beach.
The beach is lovely and deserted, but the sea is not very accessible: at high tide you cannot swim comfortably as the water is muddy and does not allow to see through to the corals and rocks below, which makes it slightly dangerous; at low tide you have to walk up the gangways to be able to snorkel in a sea that is, after all, weedy and not that full of fish. The shells are amazing, thou.
The local beach boys are indeed not a nuisance at all; they can actually be helpful and give you some company on what is really a deserted beach. It is a pity that after dark it is not accessible anymore for safety reasons; you do feel a bit like a prisoner in the compound.

In the end, you spend a lot of time at the pool: we were the only guests (because of the Shabab's attack in Nairobi and general concerns), so we had it more or less for ourselves, or share it with the owners' extended family.
It is enjoyable, were not for the tendency of some of the staff (not all) to oogle too much the female guests and to extoll unsollicited the virtues of Islam.

And in this and a few other issues is the problem of Kinondo Poa: the low price does not necessarily justify some small nuisances that could easily be fixed.
The service is spotty, sometimes polite, sometimes actually annoying, but nowhere near the standard that other places in Kenya can provide. Being the only guests means that it would not have been so difficult to provide a bit more care and consistency.
Similarly, while the room is bare but tasteful, the toilet (it cannot be considered a bathroom) is unwelcoming and grubby, and it wouldn't be too costly to provide actual towels instead of the rough sheets, thorn and thin, that you are supposed to use for several days.
The food gets rave reviews in other posts, but we were a bit disappointed and quickly bored. A continuous unpleasant aftertaste (palm oil?) was common in many dishes, and none was outstanding. With fresh sea food available, and tantalizingly offered in other resorts and bar, you end up craving shrimps and lobsters but getting only pasta and rice.
Hannes, the owners, is helpful and full of suggestions, and can organize amazing safaris. Moving around the area, on the other hand, is harder, as roads are terrible, 'attractions' are far from each others and taxis end up being expensive.

All in all it was a pleasant stay, but if we were to return we would stay a bit more north, were the beach is sandy even deep in the water, and there are bars and establishments to break the monotony: we would probably have to pay a bit more and brave some beach boys, thou.

we stayed five nights in November. Ultimate peace and quiet, located 100ms from the beach a walk down the path you will see colobus and vervet mokeys in the trees above to a beach with only local fisherman and the occasional tourist or villa owner about 1 km of untouched beach( no beach boys). Loungers are brought to the beach for you and there is plenty of shade. The lodge is 8 rooms in 4 semi detached cottages located around the pool, plenty of space and seclusion. The staff cannot do enough for you, meals can be taken on your terrace or around the pool under the stars. The rooms are spacious and plenty of water is provided in a dispenser. The shower room is adequate.
This is a haven away from the high tourist areas (quite a long drive from the ferry but worth it), the food is great and the staff are excellent, a great place to chillout and unwind. The dhow trip and picnic on a secluded beach is recommended,

If you like to be among the hustle and bustle of it all then you can stop reading now as this fine place will be of no great interest to you. If, on the other hand you like to be pampered far from the madding crowd in a quiet location, then perhaps this might be for you.

The owner Hannes has done is best to pay attention to detail and it certainly shows in many ways from the attentiveness of the staff to his nightly rounds during dinner, from the flowers on the bed to the tea and coffee always on offer.

There are so many positive things to say about this place that I really do not know where to begin. The food was amazing - my wife is vegetarian and there was always something on the menu for her every day, even as a 4 course offering. You will be stuffed from early morning till nightfall so I would certainly think about getting on the treadmill after this trip. Our colleagues chose to spend their 3 nights at a more expensive up market resort and complained constantly about the food. You will get a personalized touch here, not the cruise liner fare that is standard in the majority of resorts.

The facilities include free Internet access and a very nice pool that will not be over-filled with guests as there are only 4 cottages on the grounds. There are loungers for all and if the need arises for a trip to the beach (a whopping 2 minute walk), one of the staff will take the lounger down there for you. Bear in mind that that the beach here is not as pretty as further north because of the coral but if you look left on the beach, you will see a 150 m walkway out into the water so this gets you past the coral without damaging those little feet of yours. You will certainly be taken aback by the seclusion of the beach and how there is virtually no-one there.

The thing that we loved most was sitting outside our cottage in the evening and having each dinner course served to us beneath the stars. The setting was beautiful and exceptionally tranquil. We will be back as soon as we get another long weekend free. Keep up the great work!

We stayed here for 2 nights in December, but we wished we could have stayed longer.
After traveling for 1,5 weeks in Kenya, we wanted to relax a bit, before we continued our journey to Tanzania. This is the perfect place to relax! It is peacefull and quiet. The rooms are spacious and clean, a nice shower, a water cooler in the room, airconditioning, wifi, great staff, fine food, nice swimming pool, very close to the beach.

It is a bit difficult to reach by public transport, but with a taxi it is no problem. If you can handle the bumpy roads, it is also possible to take a tuk tuk.

And a perfect price/quality value!
