Sophia's villa was great.
Very clean and well looked after. The surrounding area was lovely and the views were amazing. The villa was very well equipped with little extras which made a real difference. The owners where great to deal with and we definitely hope to return in the future.

“Would Highly recommend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2013 for a stay in March 2012

I can echo views of all reviews here. Great Villa great location, lovely owners. The pool was warm enough to swim in too at Easter utilising Solar heating. Also try 3 excellent restaurants in Plaka , 1 minute beyond Almyrida. Best beach we liked was at Plantanos. Rethimnon quaint and worth a visit.

“Quiet and beautiful views”

We were in the house in two families for a total of 6 people 10 days in July. Modern living room and kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom. Private and absolutly clean swimming pool. House is situated in a small village (Aspro) where many foreigners live. Greek people very friendly and helpful. Quiet and beautiful views. For Almirida about a 20 minute walk. There are clean sandy beach, a few taverns and restaurants with good food. Everything you need can be bought in the supermarket Inka in Almirida or 5 miles away. Chania close to public transport possible from Almirida. An interesting area, you can visit Duliana, Gavalochori very nice small towns. We have been in many places on Crete but Sophia House and Almirida are and will remain in our memories for a long long time

“Wonderful views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2013 for a stay in July 2012

The house is in a marvellous position. You can walk to the beach although a car is preferable. The house itself is comfortable and well equipped; the small swimming pool a real bonus in hot weather (although you need to take care of wet tiles after swimming). There are lovely walks from the house and if you have transport, there is a huge amount to see in the vicinity. Altogether excellent.

“J & M Crete 2 Sofia's House Aspro (8th - 22nd September 2012)”

We have just returned from 2 wonderful weeks in Crete, we stayed at a villa called Sofia's House 1.5 km outside Almyrida up in the hills in a tiny village called Aspro.

It took us some time again to find the right place but we certainly did, Sofia's House is a lovely 3 bed villa with good sized rooms. A fully equipped kitchen, nice comfy lounge, the kitchen and lounge were open plan; a good sized bathroom. There was a nice outside space to eat sunbath and swim in a great infinity pool with the most amazing views of Souda Bay the valley below the hills/mountains around you. There was never a day went by that something did not grab your attention, birds, sheep, goats, boats, planes or just the amazing panoramic views for miles. It was also a very peaceful location to just relax away from all the hustle and bustle. It was though easy to walk into Almyrida which we often did and takes between 20-30 minutes a nice easy amble all downhill through the lanes and a main road but not busy and lot’s to look at. We did not walk back, after a big meal in Almyrida and a few cocktails it was never an option and always got a taxi €8 included tip to Aspro Church, which is very pretty.

To stock up the villa there are 3 small supermarkets in Almyrida (that we came across) to buy all that you needed to stock up the villa. There was some good bakeries in the town for bread and some amazing cakes always a must when in Crete. It was our 1st time to this part of Crete and we fell in love with it, what a lovely town small with everything you need to have a great holiday. The beaches are Blue flag and were very clean and well maintained; the sea was so clear with nice sandy beaches, and good for kids to play on. Some great bars, Tavernas, Internet cafe's, bakeries, but not rowdy also the town was very friendly and helpful. We tried most of the Tavernas a few cocktails bars little cafe's and never had a bad meal all good prices anything from €10 - 70 fish pushes the cost up as for the wine stick to local wine very good cheap and you will not be disappointed. We went to the Almyrida Beach Hotel for a Cretian evening with meal and it was great. We used the hotel a few times to change and also the day we left the villa they looked after our bags for a day no charge thank you. The thing we liked all the Tavernas, bars etc were all on the front right around the bay making it great to sit with a drink or a nice meal.

We hired a car for 4 days in Almyrida - 2 companies both similar prices cost was €140 including insurance. We travelled to the other side of the island to Chora Sfakion, found a hotel overlooking the sea (Xenia Hotel €45 including breakfast) and had a great night out and drove back the following day easy and cheap. Visited lots of the little villages around us, had some nice eats and enjoyed getting lost a few times as the signage is sometimes difficult to follow, but all ads to a great experience. Also, we had a few heart in mouth moments on the mountain bends.
There is also a daily bus service that takes you to Kalives, Chania etc it leaves about 3 times a day, you can get the details opposite the Taxi office. We went to Chania for the day 30 minutes costs €5.60 each way for 2 people and a nice bus. Do go Chania is a wonderful place to spend the day more if you have time.

We would use the villa up to about 4pm then go down to the beach and a little bar at the far end of town by the little harbour. It was a great cantina, on the beach, friendly with nice snack food good free wifi and a great location to watch the sunset with a beer. Then have a shower on the beach change then out for the night bliss.
Getting to and from the airport we used the local taxi company (details below) €45 each way well worth all the hassle of a car, and all pre-booked pay when get to your destination, also reliable, safe and friendly.

I would recommend Sofia's house and we will be going back, there could be a J & M Crete 3. It was such a lovely villa peaceful just right to relax and feel refreshed, as I always say there are little things that may not be perfect, but forget them relax and enjoy your holiday.

Tips: Take a tourch if arriving late the safe key entry is tricky trust me.
When using Taxi's ask for Aspro Church drop off from airport or town
