“The only resort I've ever returned to”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

After 25 years of foreign holidays and never once returning to the same resort my wife and I have been back to Dona Sylvia Beach Resort and no doubt will continue doing so. Sure, if you want to find something to moan about you will always do so but only very minor things that aren't sufficient to spoil the holiday.
We like to sit by the pool with a cup of tea so took our own mugs rather than use their small cups.
You likely will have to share a balcony, we paid an extra £20 a day for room upgrade which gave us a larger private balcony and a bigger bathroom, well worth the money.
Didn't bother using their speciality Indian Restaurant as the main restaurant served curry enough for anyone. Would suggest it was turned into a traditional English type cafe.
None of this was a problem, terrific resort, terrific staff, terrific holiday, see you soon.
Beware the Golden Chariot Restaurant in the New Airport Terminal. We called in there for breakfast on the way home. I explained before ordering we might not have enough rupees, they said, no problem we take English Pounds. When it came to paying they tried to give an exchange rate of 50 rupees to the pound. Half the correct rate. I refused and changed some money with English tourists at the correct rate.
The Golden Chariot attempts to cheat the tourist because as there's no where to change money once you've been through customs they only give you half the value of your currency.
The result was that the Rupees I got left with I gave to the lad that cleaned the toilets instead of spending them in the Airport Shops.
However, absolutely nothing could spoil what was a really good holiday. Thank You Dona Sylvia Beach Resort

Clearly caters more for package tours but size large enough to not matter for individual bookings. Suite wonderful with great accommodation though lots of weddings and commotion may not be to everyone's liking. Wonderful adjacent beach. Great food. Extremely nice staff. A lovely stay.

We arrived on 28th Feb after a 5 day tour of the Golden Triangle. ALL staff are wonderful & everyone makes you feel so welcome.Lovely to see so many people again from the last 3 yrs & also to meet lots of new people. Nice feel to the Sea Gul restaurant with new decor, balcony & new hotplates. We decided (thanks to Graham & Jean) to go out on the roads on the pushbikes this yr & explored the otherside of the new bridge & villages. WOW how nice are the people everywhere. Karen the rep is as happy, friendly, informative & there if you need her as always. We arrived back home on 16th March & have now to decide on 2 or 3 weeks for next yr!!. It really is a fantastic hotel & is like being home, you feel relaxed as soon as you step through the gates. We talked to a people who had been to other hotels in the village or northern Goa & all said the Dona Sylvia was such a friendly hotel & they will def return so I think we need to get booked up asap.

Room Tip: We prefer top floor with large balcony as we like to sit & read/play cards/have a G&T

First time to Goa - stayed for two weeks. Clean and comfortable room, large balcony - lovely food. Bottles of water replenished every day. Nice to have the food out in the gardens twice a week. Mama Mia and Kebabs and Curries restauraunts also lovely. Loads to do if you want to - bike rides along the beach, boat trips, waterfall trip, Spice plantation or just chilling on the beach. Staff very friendly always smiling and couldn't do enough to help. You can have steak or plain chicken breast in the restaurant if you request it which we didnt know until Ramswallop told us. Would certainly recommend the Dona Sylvia.

Lots of beach shacks - gorgeous beach and loads of wildlife particulary birds - amazing to watch them when the tide is going out.

Great holiday - shame about the airport which is filthy.

Room Tip: ask for a large balcony or you may end up with a shared balcony

We found the Dona Sylvia Hotel comfortable well located on a superb beach, the sea was warm, lots of places to eat along the beach, if you had a meal and drinks they provided the sun beds for the day. Typical cost for two meals and soft drinks about £4.50. At the shops close by we felt very safe the locals were very friendly. There was Evening entertainment at the hotel every night and most nights the beach shacks would party. The Hotel staff were brilliant attentive and friendly we are definitely going back next year. check out your visa's before booking.

Stayed for 2 weeks from 1st march and had a wonderful holiday in Goa and at the Dona Sylvia.
Having read many reviews we knew not to expect the hotel to be Caribbean style 4 star and it proved to be correct - however, it is a very pleasant 3 star hotel in a great location - on the beach and in the middle of the village so easy access to the restaurants and shops - so the best of all worlds. We looked at the other hotels in Cavelossim and definitely felt this was the best overall because of location and value for money .
The hotel is absolutely fine with beautiful gardens which are painstakingly kept to the highest standards, great swimming pool and very pleasant restaurants.
The food in the main restaurant is great with lots of choices and particularly fine curries but always plenty of varieties including chefs cooking in the restaurant at every meal doing pastas and barbecue meats etc. But if you want to eat some of the finest curries you will have tasted do make sure you eat in the kebabs & curries a la carte restaurant - superb !!
People have mentioned a problem getting a sun bed and umbrella at the pool - but if you tip the pool guys 100 rupees( £1 ) they will always make sure you get what you want where you want it - many of the beds that look reserved are actually reserved by the pool guys for this very purpose !
We had room 114 - which was great - half way to beach and pool/bars and was great size, private balcony ( emailed hotel before we went to request this ) and was kept spotless by very efficient room cleaners ( lead by Rosemilla who is one of the most pleasant and diligent staff at the hotel).
The staff really are great and almost all very friendly ( only one miserable chap in pool bar for couple of days ) but our favourites were three of the staff in the main bar Rahul , Welly and the VERY BEST - Nikki - hotel promote this guy, he is brilliant and eveyone loved him.
Complaints - well really hard to find fault - but definitely too many Russians who are the rudest and seemingly the most miserable race on the planet - bring back the USSR and dont let them travel - sorry getting xenophobic but bet there's not too many would argue with me.
Outside the hotel - well the beach is amazing - miles long with warm seas to swim in lots of beach shacks selling very good and very cheap food ( beware of the price of seafood and fresh fish though - £28 for a lobster - £17 for 2 jumbo prawns etc ) Had our only problem in Mikes Place restaurant where waiter showed us two jumbo prawns and quoted 1300 rupees but when bill arrived this had changed to 1700 rupees - so would suggest you get staff to write down a price when you order. We ate out many nights as food and drinks are so ridiculously cheap and so good.
Went on three excursions - and would absolutely recommend all - Jungle book - which is overnight in the jungle - swimming with elephants and 4x4 trip to waterfalls - totally amazing. Laid back Waters - which is overnight on a three bedroom houseboat - divine - though a gamble on who's on board with you - we were really lucky, and a River Sal all day cruise which for £9 was great value.
Would we go back ( like the dozens of people on the 4th, 9th, 15th year etc !! ) no we never go to the same place twice, too many other amazing places to see. Would we recommend you go - YES.

Room Tip: email and ask for separate balcony

This is a late review (I've been in hospital)
We stayed at the Doña Sylvia in November 2013, with 8 of us in total. The arrival at Goa airport was good but the process was painfully slow and we were checked by several points. Almost like all the staff wanted a look at the passport. Transfer to the hotel was smooth and check in simple.

The rooms are all in small blocks spread around the grounds. The rooms are quite tired and in need of some refurb but are 3 star and look it. Don't be dismayed they are kept clean and the staff are very helpful at sorting problems. We look at it in that you spend little time in the room and most of it, you are asleep anyway.

The grounds are lovely and stretch all the way to the beach which is beautiful.

The food is mainly Indian with little European dishes. That is ok if you want to eat curry most of the day but the chefs could do with a bit more variety. That said if you ask for something different, they are happy to oblige. The tea is a bit of home with fresh cows milk rather than long life. The gala evenings are just superb and all the staff make huge efforts to please the guests. For a change it is well worth eating out at the local restaurants or even better at the beach shacks. The food is great and really cheap as is the beer at around a quid a pint. A meal and drink out for around a fiver.

Deli Belly, not at all, eating in or out we were all ok the whole time. 2 of our party felt unwell once and called the doctor to the hotel. The doctor was superb with a visit at 11 pm, consultation and a course of antibiotics for a total sum of £9:50

Going out is great, the people are lovely and friendly and do not pester but barter your prices for gifts. I can recommend the barber 5 minutes from the hotel (left outside) for a cutthroat shave and massage for 50Pence. We went to town (£20 in a taxi) or 20 pence on the local bus. Take the bus, it's great.
The overnight Elephant trip and safari was well worth the money but be prepared to go basic.

The entertainment was really good but we would have liked to see some more traditional shows.

NOT SO GOOD
The hotel next door shares a part of the grounds and also utilises it for themselves for what seemed a lot of seminars which involved loud music at the after party. It was so intrusive that our manager had to ask them to turn it down as it drowned out our own entertainment. On one
occasion our hotel set up the entire evening meal on the beach side just to escape the noise.

We are early risers and go to the pool at 07:30 so getting a bed was easy however, by the second week if you were not there at 06:30 you would be lucky to get a bed.

REALITY

You must bear in mind that the area is under developed and has very high humidity resulting in many buildings looking greenish with moss or Sumer such and some fixtures may show sights of rust or exposure to permanent damp.

Would we go back - absolutely in the blink of an eye.
