We had a great stay at Helen Yolanda hotel. We got probably one of best rooms in hotel, the "penthouse" with a terrace bigger than the room. The rooms are relatively small, but more than sufficient, and very clean. In fact so clean, i had to give complements to the cleaning lady an the owner. The room itself had a spectacular sea view and even more spectacular view of sunrise. But therefore it got quite hot early in the morning, thus waking me with a gentle sun beam. You can rent AC and fridge and it is not expencive. The only drawback were the packs of Germans in the hotel. Not that they were unfriendly as such, but they had 3/4 of the hotel bought down so they acted as they owned the hotel and had little if any regard for other guests. They took the tables at breakfast and grouped them together, so other guest could use only a very small amount of tables etc. Guess that's why the owners don't like to talk much... But the breakfasts were plenty, better than many other hotels with a big variety of fruits and vegetables.
There are also two of the best beaches on the island very near the hotel (walking distance). In the evenings you can walk to Kokkari and need about 15 min for that. Kokkari itself is not very interesting, but has some good restaurants, by far the best being Kariatida which serves great local stews and the best baklava. Plus the staff is very nice. Also do visit Vergina restaurant on Gagou beach in Samos town, they have the best chicken souvlakis. And please say hello to Jannis and Pannayotis. They made us feel very welcome.
Samos itself is a beautifull island, but you definitely have to rent a scooter and a car to see it all. Definetly worth seing is the Pytagora's cave, but beware of the road, because it is a dirt road and you have to go there before noon because they close the only tavern there at about 2PM. Also go see the museum in Samos town and Heraklion in Ireon.
There are few sandy beaches, two named Psilli Amos and located on the opposite sides of the island. One is about 10km from Samos town and Pythagorio, the other is on the other side of the island and a bit prettier. The only crowded beach is Gagou beach in Samos town, all other are not that crowded, some are quite private.
