“Wonderful place - Loved Rhodes, loved the Sunshine Hotel”
Reviewed 22 July 2009

Stayed at the Sunshine for the first week in July - loved the place ! It's not posh or grand, but it's an excellent budget hotel, with good facilities. And it's run by the nicest people - Poppy and Dimitri - who could not have been kinder or more helpful to us. The hotel is spotlesslessly clean, the rooms are big ( by Greek budget hotel standards ), breakfast is fresh and adequate ( and if you want more - you can buy omelette / full english etc for a few euros more ). Pool is clean and plenty of loungers / space. The pool bar is good for drinks and snacks. There is a well stocked mini market next door - and the beach is a 5 min stroll away. There are a handful of bars and tavernas in the immediate vicinity of the hotel - all were good - try happy hour at the Cocktail Bar - or the Beach Bar for fab food and you can watch the setting sun / rising moon.
It was my first time to Rhodes, it's a wonderful island, so much to see and do. We hired a quad and car to get around the island. I would go back tomorrow.
The best thing about Rhodes ? The history ? The beauty ? The sun ? The lovely friendly helpful people ? It's hard to decide !

Just came back from a weeks stay in lardos,at the sunshine hotel.
We arrived at 5 in the morning to find a note on the reception desk telling us which room we were in and where the keys were, the hotel doors were never locked i later found out.
The rooms are dated but ok,the bathrooms...disgusting a small bath which i didnt fit in and i am just over 5 ft with all the surface rubbed off a dirty shower lead attached to the tap, hook to hold it on the wall no shower curtain so water went everywhere and you had to hold the shower head while trying to wash almost impossible so i never felt clean.
The bin used for all the dirty toilet paper had no lid!!
The air conditioning cost 8 euros a night and the fridge 4 euros a night and to add insult to injury when you left your room and took your key from its holder all the electricity went out!!So unable to keep air conditioning or fridge on.
The pool area was nice but no entertainment to speak of apart from loud pop music, the hotel rep was worse then useless dont trust his word for times/dates/pick ups/distances.
The trips the rep sells you are rubbish and way over priced when you can catch a taxi or local bus right out side the hotel to any where you wish to go or hire a car from around 30 euros a day.
The shop next doors is great very friendly and helpful gave us a bus timetable etc.
Casa di flavia restuarant worse place i have ever had the misfortune to eat in food at best was lazy and we were over charged when askedabout it the owner a lady became very nasty!
The breakfast was insulting 1 white plain bread roll,1 tiny portion of butter and jam 1 orange squash 1 tea or coffee.
A small box of cerels 2 euros when in the shop next door 70 cents,a english breakfast was 5 euros.
The staff and family were nice not really interested in you and im not sure they even realised we were staying at thier hotel as the resturant and bar are open to everyone.
UNSUITABLE for elderly /disabled due to steep steps up to the hotel and down to the ground floor bedrooms, boring place to stay im glad it was for a week and not a fortnight.
The bathrooms are mopped out daily apart from sundays and the sheets changed and toilet bin emptied towels get changed every few days.

we arrived early hours of the morning no one on reception to welcome us just a notice on the reception desk with our names on and room numbers written down.we were very disappointed with the room and owners who were rude and abrupt. the entertainment was a once a week bbq with a quiz.which they charged €9 50 for which consisted of a bit of salad and a glass of wine. the bathroom was the worst with the wash basin coming away from the stand and the toilet had a big crack all the way around it which moved when you sat on it.the light in the bedroom area was hanging by a few wires .the breakfast was a bread roll with a little sachet of butter and jam and weak orange juice,

Review - 2 English ladies aged 20 - 23. Stayed for 1 week at Sunshine Apartments, Lardos, Rhodes. June 2009

If its a quiet and traditional Greek holiday that you are after than Lardos is the place to be. The Sunshine Apartments is very basic (b&b) but lovely and kept very clean. The owners Poppi and Demeteri speak perfect English and are extremely friendly and helpful. The Sunshine Apartments is located about 25min walk from Lardos main centre and even closer to the beautiful resort of Pefkos. If you want a livelier atmosphere in the day or evening than Pefkos is a great place to go, there is alot of restaurants and a lovely sandy beach which attracts families and couples. One restaurant in particular 'Corelli' is fantastic they offer great authentic Greek food at a very reasonable price - this is just on the outskirts of Pefkos which you will pass if walking from Lardos to Perkos along the main road - we visited 3 times! We didn't eat a meal at Sunshine as we always ventured out to Pefkos and Lindos, however the food we saw served to other guests looked very appetising and Poppi even grows some of the food at the hotel.

This was our first trip to Rhodes and we absolutely loved it. I would certainly recommend Sunshine Apartments.

Just got back fom a great week at the sunshine. Poppy and her family helped in making it a good holiday, nothing was too much bother. The young woman serving breakfast came across a little abrupt, but it was obvious she was shy and did not mean to be abrupt.
We met up with a super family who have been using the hotel for 13 years which says alot, all the guests staying at hotel only had good words to say.
Yes Lardos is a quiet resort, but lets face it if you want a lively place you do a little research into a place before booking. We found the quitness a bonus and we where able to visit Lindos, Rhodes etc.
On the Friday night we walked into Lardos to experience a wine festival which was so well organised, and it was lovely to see how the Greeks involve their children in such a wonderful social occcasion.
We will certainly be going back to the Sunshine.

My husband and I have just returned from a week staying at the Sunshine, thanking our lucky stars that we only opted for one week and not two.
Our rep described the hotel as 'basic' and basic it certainly was. After reading several reviews about the friendly, family atmosphere we were rather disappointed by the complacent and disinterested attitude that we encountered from the owners. Saying that, the sons who ran the bar did their best and were polite and helpful.

Reception was never manned although the owners stayed around the pool area so were available if needed. However, there was an ever changing supply of books left at reception to read/swap. Much needed as the nightlife is severely lacking and the entertainment on offer at the hotel virtually non-existent.
The rooms were clean (and cleaned every day -noisily from 9.30 onwards so no chance of a lie-in) but fairly small and basic and the bathroom was small and airless. Air conditioning is a must at this time of year and we felt that 8 euros a night was expensive and edged the hotel into a price category which it didn't merit. You also had to pay 10 euros to hire a fridge for a week!
We requested a pool view but overlooked a building site instead.

The food available was excellent - varied and favourably priced for the area. Breakfast however was a joke and we chose to pay to eat elsewhere rather than get up for what was included in our package. One white submarine roll, a pat of butter and fluorescent jam with diluting juice does not constitute a decent breakfast as far as we are concerned. Bizarrely, coffee purchased later in the day was double the strength and served in a larger cup. A minor point but still annoying. The most galling thing about it was that the hotel served very nice, freshly squeezed juice, bacon rolls, greek yogurt etc for an added price at the same time so they are obviously aware of what good quality food actually is.

The pool was fine and well maintained and the majority of guests went there all day and every day, despite the fact that there are numerous other pools around which you are welcome to use. The beach is close by and lovely and the atmosphere down there and in the pools and bars surrounding the beach lively and welcoming. Worth the walk!

The cocktail bar is a pleasant enough area but always deserted as the tv constantly showed greek soaps (for the bar staff and their friends) or played loud, dated muzak. They lose out as most of the nearby bars have sky tv and show sport etc. and had a much better atmosphere
LIndos is worth a visit, as is nearby Pefkos. You are better going there independently by taxi or bus rather than the inflated price charged by the rep.

It's a nice, quiet resort but we wont be going back and wouldn't recommend this hotel. There are far nicer ones to stay at in the area.

  • Liked — the pool (although it is nothing specia)
  • Disliked — over priced, dreadful breakfast incl. lacking in atmosphere

This is our third visit with teenage children. As usual we have had a lovely time. Very happy with the standard of service and cleanliness, the rooms are well cleaned every day. The pool is also maintained to a very high standard. We have always found Popi and her family to be very helpful and friendly. Nothing is ever too much trouble. The restaurant menu is varied and all the food is cooked to a very high standard, we noticed it has become very popular with non-residents this year and was generally very busy every night. During all our stays we have never come across, unfriendly/unhelpful staff ,everyone from the girls who clean the rooms to the family members have been courteous, helpful and friendly. Lardos is a very quiet place just right for a very relaxing holiday. The hotel is also 5 mins walk from a lovely beach, and 15 mins walk into Lardos village which has good selection of restaurants and bars. We are going back for three weeks next year.
