“Fantastic holiday - soo much better than we expected!! definitely going again!!”
Reviewed 7 July 2011

We traveled to Ocean Club last summer with Thomas Cook self catering. We booked a 1 bedroom apartment and were told that after the flight we would have a 4 hour transfer, when we got off the plane we were put into a taxii with 1 other family and we arrived in just under an hour. We were greeted at reception with a portugese man who spoke excellent english and we were quickly taken in a van up to the apartment and we found that we had a fantastic apartment with a beautifull pool and sea view with a balcony. Not only did we have a full kitchen, satellite t.v and washing machine, we had two twin bedrooms and a full sized bathroom with maid service each two days. The complex was quite spread out and by each block of apartments was a biggish pool, bar/restaurant with plenty of sunloungers! The staff could not have been more freindly, and all apart from the cleaners spoke perfect english. The pool was spotless and there was a pingpong table next to if for anyone to use without charge. on a friday and monday there was a bbq and for 12euro per head you could have as much as you wanted and the differnet food was superb!! The beach was about a 10-15 minute from our apartment and the restaurant on the beach was fantastic value and great food! We ate out every night for the 2 weeks and ate somewhere different almost each night! The beach itself was clean, huge and ther was lots of watersport going on, i would recomend the kids watersports day - it was really cheap and they had loads of fun! you had to pay for the sun loungers and shades but they were good as it got really hot - the highest was43 degrees.
there were plenty of bars shops and restaurants, and taking the bus into Lagos for the day was well worth it, we took a boat trip out to see the dolphins and there were so many and they came so close to the boat it was magical!! My 2 kids loved it! On the last few days of our stay we went to a waterpark, ithink it was aquaworld, the only thing wrong with it was the floor got extremely hot and the waterpaths were not completely cool either. Overall we had an absouloutly fantastic holiday and will definitely be going back in a few years - i could have wrote so much more about our holiday, i could go on for days!!!

Room Tip: ask for a sunny balcony with a pool view, it was lovely to sit out after we had eaten

Just me and my wife, we got a lovely big apartment – 2 levels, on lower floor large room with double bed and ensuite, another room with twin beds plus bunk beds, bathroom and on entry (upper) kitchen, dining table, lounge and balcony. Maids turned up twice but didn’t do much, but to be fair wasn’t much for them to do. No safe though, you can get one for 15 Euros a week from main reception, bit of a joke and not what you expect.

Lagos is on a hill and Ocean Resort apartments are in different part of town, ours was at the top but no problem as early season and no kids, maybe a littel bit much otherwise - depends on your circumstances.

A la carte dinner very good, 4 choices for started, main and deserts. You have this 4 nights, pizza restaurant (good), buffet on night of arrival (not bad) and BBQ. We headed into Lagos on BBQ night, went to Restaurante O Alcaide – very good, highly recommended.

Breakfasts were average, bacon and sausage every morning with scrambled/poached/fired egg (one type a morning) then fresh fruit, cereals and toast. Very poor in comparison to evening, but of 3 star experience although the coffee was appalling, think it was hot water with some brown colouring!

Staff nice and friendly, all English and would have preferred to have l=more locals so you think you are abroad but only a small niggle.

Luz is a nice and small town, very British without becoming too 'chav' for want of a better word, not a huge amount to do but enough when you throw in Lagos (25 mins and 1.80 Eruros on bus or 12 Euros in taxi) and the other smaller town (1.5 hour walk to West, well worth doing). Beach is nice, not huge. Lagos is much bigger with more to do in the evening and larger beach.

Would recommend, although I should point out we got this last minute (just under 2 weeks before) and so paid half the rate card price.

Room Tip: ask to be near Palm reception as in the middle

There are several big plus points for this place: the reps are friendly, helpful but don't patronise. There is tennis, swimming and a beautiful beach to enjoy. The food, provided as part of the package was excellent, well cooked and heathly but tasty. Apartments are spacious and comfortable with fully fitted kitchen, 2 bathrooms and are quiet. My only gripe: not quite enough room service each day. All round this place is great for families or (outside school holidays) couples looking for peace and quiet. Don't come if you want wild nights out, the village has little to offer on that front.

Just back from 2 weeks with Mark Warner at Praia de Luz... super apartment, cleaned 3 times a week. Food was 'fine dining' every evening and good, the buffets on Friday and Saturday were delicious. 4 pools, one indoor, and praise be, an Adult Only pool... great to get away from other peoples' little darlings. The Mark Warner staff were, as always, courteous, helpful and hard working.

Reported an ant infestation twice but nothing was done about it. Would have been done odd or weren't for this. I saw another apartment which was modern and about nicer. If you stay here try to get one. The half board is good value as the restaurant was very good.

I will start off with the possitive, the appartment that we stayed in was actually a house and immaculate. Now for the not so possitive - We went half board and quickly found that they only served food in the millenium restuarant which was about 15 mins walk there and back for breakfast and dinner.... when you have kids in tow and the sun is beating down on you, you dont favour the walk too much, my eldest daughter was really fainty by the time we got to breakfast - we then took swim stuff so that they could cool down when walking back... anyway, it's not just the weather - breakfast was half indoors and half outdoors for seating, but it was still cramped. Everyone was always waiting for coffer/tea or bacon/sausage etc... and the girls were not too quick on getting it for you either. When you go for evening dinner, it's only a buffet on Saturdays, the rest is choose one of the four options, these are not very good for the "traditional eaters" having things like bacon on a bed of rocket leaves with beetroot and black pudding - erh as if that's gonna fill you up... other dishes were just as weird and didn't at all go with anything else on the plate. The drinks are NOT included and they take bloody ages to come. You evening is spoilt for the length of time you are waiting, they bring you bread, leave you for 40 mins, then serve up your starter, then 1 hour later you get dinner, then you give up and ask for the drink bill... not much of you evening left at that point to do anything. NOW THEN THE POOL: you are not, i repeat - NOT allowed to sunbathe TOPLESS.... they come and tell you straight away - like they have nothing else to do... they also have a gate man who makes his way like Zorro to tell you to cover up.... You are NOT allowed floats on the pool, you are NOT allowed to eat any other food around the pool - and they are watching! Also the gate man takes your towel off if your more than 15 mins away from your bed, which did not happen to me but alot were complaining - this was not rectified, he happily went on taking off the towels..how brave i thought...those people had fire in their eyes... but it does stop the same old, saving beds until people roll out of bed at 3pm... not many beds around the pool, so a quick jump and skip by all the ladies in the morning like a trolley dash - well the family pool anyway, their is a adult pool but you can't leave your child alone, so that wasn't used much as it's streets aways. To sum Praia del luz up, the beach is lovely, the beach front - is not there - and the place is small and not many shops or pubs around... would i go Portugal again, yes, would i go to the same place again with the Mark Warner staff - erh NOPE. The portuguse people were so friendly - it's a shame. But thank you No.17 for the appartment/house - that was lovely.

We have just returned from a two week stay at the Ocean Club which we booked over a year ago through Thomas Cook. In our party there were 4 adults and 6 children, aged 3-12. When we booked this holiday we were very specific to the Travel Agent as to what we wanted from our holiday and it has to be said that we were very disappointed. The rooms we stayed in were beautiful and very spacious but were'nt next door to each other as we had requested when booking. All of the properties at Ocean Club are privately owned (something else we were'nt told when booking) and this in itself meant that we were constantly worrying about the children breaking something. We are'nt the kind of parents to allow our children to run amock but it was difficult to relax when you are basically living in someone elses home !! Also the bins were'nt changed daily as we were told they would be, I think they were changed 3 times during our stay. The towels and bedding were changed once and our room was'nt cleaned at all. Most of the guests that stay at Ocean Club book through Mark Warner, and these guests are provided with childcare services and childrens clubs. Even if these had of been made available to us we would not have used them as we go on holiday to spend time with our kids. When booking we were told that there was regular entertainment in the evenings for the children when in fact there was none at all (except on bbq night when there was a reggae singer). He was good, but my 7yr old was'nt too impressed !! When we asked the rep about the lack of entertainment for the kids she basically told us that the Algarve is'nt that sort of place and that maybe we should have gone to Benidorm !! Praia Da Luz itself is lovely and the beach is beautiful but again unless you want to sit in a restaurant all night (not ideal with 6 children) there is'nt much else to do. We got a bus into Lagos most nights which is lovely. We had a few lovely meals there and enjoyed browsing round the shops and Marina. We did make the best of our holiday to the Ocean Club but feel that it was'nt really for us. The kids loved the pool, and the beach but im afraid unless you are a Mark Warner guest your pretty much on your own !!
