“Great staff shame about the rating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2010

Just returned from Costa Blu Hotel on 28th August after a week's break with my daughter.

I liked the hotel - it's not traditional in style i.e. more like a US motel style layout with individual rooms laid out horizontally rather than vertically but the net result is each room overlooks the sea and the hotel is full of colour and bright flowers in the gardens

The hotel is advertised as a 5*, but it's no more than a good 3-4* hotel of average quality. I've no idea what gives them a 5* rating other than the friendly staff and the views across the sea to mainland Greece.

The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable with daily service changing towels etc. Each room has Air Con and TV but little by way of added extras you would expect in a 5* hotel. The pool is good and for the week we were there had sufficient seating and space for all.

The biggest issues for me (and I should have checked this in advance) were that:

1) The town of Benitses is south of Corfu airport and IS ON the flight path to the airport - you cannot actually see passengers on the planes, but the planes are low enough to make out the name of the airline and of course loud enough to disturb, particularly at night when they are taking off (even in the small hours) - all landing planes pass directly in front of this hotel.
2) Behind Benitses is a large hill (maybe mountain) and being on the east side of the island when the sun is going down you get shadow by 18:30 which is quite early compared to sunset.
3) The hotel has some odd rules which you can overcome when you speak to the management, but you cannot buy a glass of wine in the restaurant and cannot buy a bottle of wine by the pool.
4) There is no entertainment in the evenings at the hotel although Greek dancing is scheduled once per week but didn't actually take place the week we were there
5) The gym is a running machine and 2 bikes and some weights - I did not see the massage and sauna advertised and suspect it was closed as so few people staying in hotel
6) The buffet food is OK but little choice and there is no a la carte restaurant that we saw although it is advertised

If you stay do so in the knowledge it's not going to be 5* but the views from the hotel are tremendous and the hotel staff are great.

And if you are in Benitses make sure that you go on the sea trip to Paxos and Anti-Paxos - it takes all day but well worth the €25 per adult charge,

Stayed here for a week. Clean rooms and friendly staff throughout the hotel, and good location near Benitses, which is quite a quiet town, but with some good restaurants to eat in if you go Greek. The pool is nice. Rooms are simple and basic, but shower is bit of a pain as hand held. We did expect to have tea / coffee making facilities in the room if a "5 star" hotel, but there was nothing.
The main weakness of the hotel is the food, which was pretty tasteless and despite plenty of choice it would have been nicer if they did a couple of things well, rather than 5 or 6 poorly. Never eaten so much salad!!!!
The only other criticism is when it states a gym it was only a running machine, and 2 bikes.
Overall we enjoyed our stay here, except the food, but it is more of a mid range hotel.

we have just returned from spending a week in corfu at the costa blu hotel. booked the holiday on last minute.com literally the day before we left.We were offered the costa blu on a half board basis and how lucky we were! beautiful views from the restaurant every mealtime, the staff were all very friendly and the restaurant staff were particularly at tentative.
Room was clean with free air con. Had a wonderful week. would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family.

We have just returned from a week at the Costa Blu and had a terrific time. My husband and I travelled with our 18 year old daughter and my best friend. We took a taxi from the airport (€25 - 15 minutes). When we arrived in the middle of the night we were greeted warmly by the Manager and were taken to our two-bedroom suite with two bathrooms and living room, fridge, mini-bar, balcony with dining table and chairs. When we woke in the morning the stunning view took our breath away - even better than the pictures. We spent the week chilling by the pool which was never over-crowded. Excellent service both in pool snacks and in the restaurant at night for both food and drinks. The whole hotel is very clean and very well maintained. The Staff were lovely. Benitses is a relatively quiet village - visible from the hotel - with its little harbour and sailing yachts. A ten minute walk in the evening takes you to bars, restaurants and shops - no nightclubs that we saw(!!) but plenty of life. There are plenty of restaurants locally if you want a change from the hotel buffet. We took a bus trip (€1.70 per person) into Corfu town and then a taxi home (€20). The old town of Corfu is lovely and it is better to see it from late afternoon/early evening when it is cooler. We had amazing weather and Costa Blu is a perfect place to relax and we can't wait to come back soon!!

Just got back from Benitses and had an awesome time.
Apparently Mid June is out of season (temperatures averaging over 30C) so the hotel was empty. We had a choice of rooms, all with awesome views across to mainland Greece and Albania. The hotel pool was deserted (but well maintained), at breakfast we rarely saw any other guests and the atmosphere was like a large private villa with staff.

Positives:
Quiet, relaxed, astounding views, friendly and helpful staff, good pool, short stroll (less than 10 minutes) to the tavernas and restaurants of Benitses, beach only 2 minutes from room, easy local bus journey into Corfu town. 2 bathrooms, large lounge and double bedroom, fabulous balcony/veranda with table and chairs. Almost a private villa (out of season). Good air-conditioning.

Negatives:
Breakfast was average. Pool bar closed (out of season). No "Do Not Disturb" signs for the cleaner (she came at 10:30am - which was occasionally a problem). Handheld shower in both bathrooms. Mosquitos can be a problem if you forget to close the fly screens!

We didn't have evening meal at the hotel as we'd read the other reviews on this site. However, as the many tavernas were so close, we ate well (Greek, Chinese, Italian restaurants).

Overall, a definite recommendation.

Good hotel, with stupid rules.
Friendly people, beautiful vieuw, nice room.
The rules are stupid e.g., because you can not order a glass of wine, only a bottle in the restaurant. At the pool bar you can not order a bottle, only a glass of wine.
It is allowed to use the pool between 10:00 an 18:00.
Price for beer € 4,00, coca cola €3,30. Chps €5,00.
After arrining the lunchpackage for the last morning, we had to leave without lunch.
No ice-cream avaible ( for childern), even not after requests.

We arrived at night. Reception open & well lit . Staff friendly. Appartment above expectation. The photo's and previous reviews did not do this place justice. My friend and I had a huge suite on the second floor. Two bathrooms, a double room and living room. In each room there was a TV. Granted we had limited channels but I was on holiday. I like firm beds and pillows so I was in heaven. Air conditioning throughout and a lovely balcony that held Table and 4 chairs for early morning suntanning and late morning conversations. The fridge or mini bar was fine. Staff were very helpful and the place was so clean we could have eaten off the floor.
The pool area was lovely and not too over crowded. We wanted peace and quiet and to an extent that was what we got. There were fellow british people at the hotel and people from other countries. The beauty of this location is seen during the day with wonderful gardens. However if that is not what you want and the noisy night life of a resort hotel is what you beackon for then this hotel is not for you. After dinner you can sit beside the pool and have drinks, talk and admire the view. If you want a little entertainment walk down into Benisties. This is a nice 10-15 min walk along the sea shore. The small parade of shops, bars and eating places made the location interesting night life. We were able to take advantagae of other hotel's entertainment and sat in the hotel bar areas watching various acts. We then sat along the bar stretch and drank cocktails while watching tourist's walk by. An entertainment in itslef if i say so myself. The fact that the olympic games were taking place made good TV and conversation points. We then went back to our hotel where we could sleep becasue there was very limited noise.
Break fast and dinner were fine. The food was lukewarm but that is due to the location of the food which is near the Air condition box. We mentioned it upon leaving but if they take notice is to be seen.
The food can only excite you for 4 days after that we were glad that we were only doing 7 nights. After dinner we would go for deserts down in the town. We would collect food at breakfast for the lunch period and go dow into the town for a lovely lunch that was not too expensive. It is cheaper to buy stuff down the town and store in the fridge and that includes water as things are more expensive in the hotel. We visited different places to try them out. some were very good and others were ok . At the hotel make sure that you ask for straight forward drinks because they do not know how to do come cocktails. The girls were from poland and spoke good english but this was a summer job and they were not experienced bar staff.
The hotel does not provide night time entertainment even though some of the signs lead you to think that they do. I asked to have a spa treatment and found out that i had to book it 24 hours in advance. I did . When I went to the recpetion desk 10 minutes before the appointment I was told that the appointment had to be cancelled. i was very disappointed and did not bother with this again. Do not expect that there is sand on this side of the island. The beach is what i call Mini rocks.Think Brighton and you will not be disappointed. The hotel has access to the beach and there are free long chairs and shades for hotel clients. We went along the road and found a beach which we paid 3 euros for and then discoverd that the hotel had a free beach. Doesn't matter it was a plesant expereince. However be aware that the greek people regulary swim and use the beach area just the same as tourist. They will use the hotel equipment and some may pretend that they do not speak English when you ask them for the stuff. This is not to say they do not like tourist. it's just when it's hot we are all looking for shade. The hotel is situated on a hill and therefore not disabled friendly. The stairs and different levels did challenge my limited levels of fitness. Kids i guess will not mind.
I was amazed that I could smoke in the hotel, my room, in the restaurant anywhere really.I did take advantage of some of that.
The local bus runs past the hotel. This goes to old Corfu Town and the Airport. This cost something like one euro seventy. You can buy tickets like prepay. The cost is then one euro thirty however if you pay on the bus it is more. the ride is around 20-30mins to Corfu old Town and they are frequent. We spent a whole day in Corfu town and visited again to collect some presents. I loved the experience of shopping for gold. i've never been to a shop and served drinks as part of the experience. The old town is interesting with lovely old buildings.
We also decided to take the bus back to the airport rather than a taxi which may charge twenty euros.
The key activates the elec so no fear of fires as everything turns off when you leave the room. The aircondition works speedy. We did ask to be moved to the 3rd floor because we wanted to see the difference: someone had mentioned it on a review. But we found the room smaller and hotter. So we stayed where we were.
our flight was late at night and so we had to leave the room by 12 noon. Thye allowed us to leave by 1pm without additional charge. We were allowed to relax by the pool all day and our luggage stored at no extra charge. When we needed to change into our travel clothes they gave us a room with a shower to get ready. it had clean towels and was given at no extra charge.
I could write much more but i think overall i've mentioned the good and the bad points. We wanted a no hassles holiday with good service and we got it. we wanted adventure but not too much and we got it. We enjoyed some good converstation with other holiday makers and had a excellent hotel to come back to at the end of our day. I would visit again.

  • Liked — it was clean, spacious and staff were friendly.
  • Disliked — spa treatments not readily available and food could be warmer
