“A wonderful place to escape to.”

Just returned home after a week on Swallow Tail. Dermot and Caro have thought of everything to make this a gem of a holiday home. Woke up to early morning mist on the lake and sat with a glass of wine watching the sun setting in the evening. Enjoyed watching a family of Little Grebes and the flocks of Swallows, House Martins and Pied Wagtails catching insects over the water. The wood burning stove, with a generous stock of fuel kept us cosy on the couple of chilly evenings. There was plenty of equipment to make self catering easy, and to be honest we loved being on the boat so much we chose not to eat out as planned. We were very lucky with the weather, but I imagine even on a wet day it would still be beautiful. A lovely little holiday home, not for those wanting night life, TV and internet, but if like us you need to escape the rat race, love nature and something a little different you can't beat it.

Peaceful weekend away, private setting. We would return but to a different boat, due to better chances with the fishing.

“A gem of a find .... a wonderful place to relax and unwind!”

We have just returned from a week on Clouded Yellow - one of three Houseboats at Blagdon Waters, 'we' being myself and husband and two girls (14 and 11). The boat and boat house were very comfortable and warm and well equipped, although if you plan to 'eat in' it might be worthwhile taking an ovenproof dish/baking tray as these were the only things missing in an otherwise very well equipped galley. The beds were very comfortable and the boat felt spacious, especially with the added bonus of the boat house. It was lovely sitting on the front deck of the boat in the early morning or evening, with a cup of tea or glass of wine and just watch the lake. None of us are fisherman, but we enjoyed watching the fish 'jump' in the water, and the family of ducks, morhens or geese swim pass. We watched the buzzard flying overhead and saw a water vole on the shore. We spent some of our days visiting the local area, including Becky Falls, Castle Drogo, Tintagel, Boscastle and Bude. After the hustle and bustle of busy days, it was bliss to return to our little haven of peacefulness. It was lovely to spend 'family time' together, playing badminton on the shore or board games on the boat. This really is a gem of a place I would recommend to anyone!

“Best nights sleep I've had in months!”

'Painted Lady' is the name of the charming houseboat which we stayed on this weekend at Blagdon Water. Despite the weather being freezing, the little woodburning stove was efficient and kept the boat warm as toast - coal and wood provided by the owners. The bed was super comfortable and warm and since sustaining a shoulder injury skiing early this season I have not been able to sleep - I slept like a log and woke up feeling on top of the world! The view from the boat accross the water is incredibly restful and really the whole experience was utter bliss.

Just returned from a week aboard Swallow Tail.
If you want noise, parties, internet, television, and the usual trappings of the 21 century don’t go! If on the other hand you seek peace, calm, tranquillity and the natural beauty of the Devon countryside then you will be hard pressed to beat this place.
We stayed between 2nd and 9th March and apart from one of the other boats having some people there for a few days we had the place to ourselves. Not that it would have been any problem if there had been other people because the way the 3 boats are situated blending into the lake it’s difficult to see them or be seen which gives it a very isolated and private feel.
Swallow Tail is a 4 berth barge with one double at the rear and two singles in the middle (I’m sure there is a more nautical phrase to use). It has two bathrooms each with a shower and marine toilets for efficient use of water which is pumped in and out. The water supply was certainly more than adequate for us but you will notice a slower flow rate if using two things together. This wasn’t an issue for us. The kitchen is next to the dinning and seating area which is certainly spacious enough for four opening out onto the front deck looking over the lake.
No television, which is marvellous and just a simple radio, cd player and ipod dock and fantastic log burning stove. The majority of electric is via a 12v system supplied via solar power.
A large wooden summer house housing the gas bottles and electrics is on the land next to the boat and also double as an additional seating and storage area along with further wooden bench seating on the grass.
All in all a very enjoyable and comfortable stay and we have no hesitation in recommending the place and we will certainly be returning.

Thanks to Dermot and family

“A Brilliant experience away from the outside world.”
Reviewed 19 September 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed on the houseboat Clouded Yellow at the extreme end of the water. It was well equipped with everything need to enjoy a very comfortable week away from the outside world free from stresses and strains using only battery lights and gas stove. The fishing was great for excellent Trout which we barbecued up beside the boat house. The wildlife is plentiful and close up. This was a most enjoyable holiday for all the right reasons regardless of the weather, not for the faint hearted ( no signal, electricity, internet or hairdriers.) brilliant !
