“What a find...........One of Haydon's Bridge's little gems!”
Reviewed 15 May 2011

We were travelling with family up to Northumberland with a stop off to visit Hadrian's wall. There's a fair choice of B & B's in the surrounding area but on the Web, the pictures and the description of Grindon Cartshed sealed our choice, and as quite discerning travellers, we were not disappointed.
This B & B is just minutes away from Housestead's Roman Fort and the hustle and bustle of Haydon Bridge and other local villages and small towns with lots on offer, but after a long and busy drive up from South Wales, and an enjoyable afternoon exploring the nearby site at Vindolanda, walking into Grindon Cartshed was a real treat, warm and peaceful on a showery spring evening.
Jackie greeted us as we arrived and welcomed us into the guest's sitting/dining room area. After a very hectic day it was so quiet and the foor to ceiling windows provides visitors with the opportunity to just stop and stare, and unwind with a welcome pot of coffee and biscuits to keep us going whilst Jackie prepared dinner. Booked in advance, from my experience as a non-meat eater, Jackie offers up tasty alternatives. The eggs for breakfast are very fresh, straight from the hens that Jackie keeps.
Other reviews have mentioned small rooms but the rooms are modern, very comfortable, spotlessly clean, bright and cheerful and the beauty of this establishment is the use of the guest sitting room with comfy sofas to sit and relax and mull over the day's activities.
Jackie and her husband, Dave, who also popped in to have chat offered us good advice on the best places to visit, from Hadrian's wall sites to the best on local shops.
We would go back, and we would all recommend this B & B; very good hosts; clean and fresh rooms; crisp bedlinen; bright and cheerful.

We just had a short break at Grindon Carthouse, which is offered on a self-catering basis during winter. It was just perfect for us, with enough space for the children (3 & 5 years old) to run around, and was also beautifully warm courtesy of the under-floor heating. Wonderful attention to detail, with nice touches such as local jams waiting for us on arrival, and a collection of toys and games for the children. The kitchen was very well supplied with all the necessary implements. The presence of a television and DVD player, and also WiFi also added to the convenience of our stay. The location was great for Hadrian's Wall and the main Roman forts, and the children loved visiting these. However the view from the carthouse was so relaxing we'd have been happy just to stay in and look at the sheep and distant hills!

We had such a wonderful stay at this B&B and both me and my partner wanted to spread the word to thank the proprietors for their fantastic hospitality. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel incredibly welcome. Nothing was too much trouble and we were even given helpful route planning advice for the continuation of our hiking trip along the wall. The room we stayed in had everything you could ask for. It was cozy, well decorated and impeccably clean. The next day were served an absolutely delicious breakfast in the sunlit conservatory which offered a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. The entire stay was faultless and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this B&B to others.

After exploring Hadrian's Wall all day we decided to stay overnight in the area. We saw the sign for "Grindon Cartshed B&B" down a side road and decided to have a look. What a surprise it was! Jackie & Dave rebuilt their cart/barn into a 3 bedroom B&B (another building is also being renovated). We had a nice pot of tea & cookies upon arrival. The lounge was walled in glass and had a wonderful view of sprawling hills and grazing sheep. They were so much fun to watch, as also were the finches that fed just outside. It was a great room for writing in my journal, and reading. The rooms were small, but entirely adequate. The beds were comfy, and the breakfast outstanding.

my sincere thanks to Jackie and David for making their lovely b and b accessible to me as a wheelchair user. it is still quite difficult finding suitable places to stay but the Cartshed was first class. Low level thresholds, doors wide enough to accommodate my standard wheelchair, and a fully accessible shower/bath room as good as any hotel I have used.
From arrival to departure, help was available for any relevant issues on request.
The setting and panoramic vista's from the breakfast room were pure idyll and a full moon, clear skies, shimmering stars, the sound of total silence apart from the occasional bleating of distant sheep, all on a barmy evening was a special memory.
Cartshed gets my vote as great place to stay.

had a lovely overnight stay at this more than comfortable bed and breakfast. dave and jackie were the most welcoming hosts with excellent suggestions for dinner and tour of the area. it is in a most beautiful part of the world and even though we were there for only a very short time we felt as though we had had a very restful break. thank you both. jim and dinah marshall
