Owner description: Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift and enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over the world. Twenty acres of outstanding woodland plants include not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites such as camellia, pieris, azalea and magnolia. Other trees and shrubs take the flowering season on into the autumn along with an inspiring miscellany of bulbs, perennials, climbers, water plants and ferns, many rare and unusual, many down to earth and familiar, all interesting and beautiful in their diverse ways. A spectacular coastal and island panorama can be enjoyed from the easily accessible cliff top viewpoint. Visitors are welcome every day and will find something of interest throughout the year, come rain or shine.

“Really worth a visit”
Reviewed 15 August 2010

We visited Arduaine on a day with a bit of weather (to say the least). It really is a marvellous garden with a choice of paths to suit all levels of agility. We got a buggy round all but the steepest parts of the garden. The viewpoints available give fantastic views over the sound of Jura with a guide to which islands you can see. When the weather cleared on our day there the view was amazing. The garden has been threatened with closure so everyone should visit to keep numbers up to make sure NTS get the message! There's also a lovely bistro/restaurant/cafe next to the entrance which does very nice warm scones.

I see that you call yourself 'always_take_a_towel', but I suggest that when visiting the west coast of Scotland you 'always_take_a_-waterproof_jacket'! Weather is something that we have plenty of and this is why shelter is so important at Arduaine.

Fortunately the garden is now financially secure thanks to the generosity of members and supporters, but there is always something hiding round the corner to surprise us and we can never be complacent. So we hope that visitors to the area will call in to see us and sample the delights of this special place - to say nothing of the warm scones at the adjact Loch Melfort Hotel!

Many thanks for your review,
