“Incredible view, and handsome Heeland Coo!”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

This was stop number three for us on our summer Scotland tour, and it was simply amazing. The view from our room was beautiful, the dinner was sumptuous, the walk in the Arduaine Gardens was beautiful, and I got to pet a heeland coo. What more can a US traveler ask for? The hotel was very accommodating by providing a fan and helping make our stay comfortable. Bravo!

Room Tip: They're all good, but we stayed in the add-on and were very happy there.

Absolutely stunning views from our room (5), with the setting the hotel should be fabulous but there appears to be a little bit of under investment. Various items need upgraded. There is is window in the restaurant and it is obviously the double unit has failed and it does detract from the view. Overall tho staff were very friendly if somewhat going about their duties without any direction from management. I overheard on guest saying he he was going to telegram them so that he could be offered desert!

Room Tip: View from room 5 was exceptional

Many thanks for taking the time for writing a review. You are absolutely correct to point out the failed window in the Restaurant but please don't think we have missed it. We have a whole series of new triple glazed windows going in which we ordered a few weeks ago and have been awaiting delivery from the firm in Oban. So any units in the hotel which are needing replaced are about to be, including those in the bedroom you stayed in and didn't comment on! Not sure what happened in the Restaurant on the night of your stay. We have an excellent team of supervision in place and rarely receive any negative comment about our service as you can see in all the many positive comments below. We shall investigate and make sure whatever blip happened is ironed out for the future! Apologies that it made your stay less than the high standard we would expect to give you.

We do hope you can come back again and see the improvements we are making

Kind regards

We were disappointed !
We were allocated room 9. the room is very small and in need of a full makeover.

Room 9 is sold as a superior room, it is definitely not superior in any way except perhaps in the context of the other rooms in the hotel.

The rate of £114 per night for this room is excessive, particularly as a full breakfast is extra at £6 per person. continental breakfast is provided.

We would rate this room no higher value than £90 per night.

On the plus side the staff are professional and attentive. the position and the views are very good.

The food in the dining room is above average but expensive, table de hote menu is £39.00.

The Bistro is excellent value for great dishes.

The public rooms are pleasing and generally comfortable although some of the settees are very low.

The patio area needs some attention, there are weeds growing between the flags and there are no sun umbrellas to provide shade.

In conclusion we would say that this hotel has all the potential to be a jewel but lack of attention to the finer points means we will not return to the Loch Melfort Hotel.

We have been travelling to Scotland for many many years and we have experiences of far better hotels.

Such a shame. . . . . . .

Room Tip: Avoid room 9 at any cost . . .

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and we are so sorry to hear that you found your stay disappointing. Room 9 was totally refurbished 2 years ago and had a brand new ensuite shower room fitted, sorry it was not to your taste. The rooms in the main house are individually designed and whilst smaller than the Cedar Wing rooms, many people like to stay in the older Main House, for which you pay slightly more per room. We think we offer good value for money in comparison to other hotels of our type and grading and sorry that on this occasion we did not deliver the quality and value you were expecting.
Kind regards

This hotel's location has to be one of the best on the Scottish coast. The views are glorious. The hotel and restaurant are excellent, the staff welcoming, friendly and professional. Rachel Ross (Proprietor) was especially helpful when I had an unexpected medical problem. The adjoining NT gardens are a beautiful bonus. We booked for one night and stayed for three!

I recently attended a small family reunion dinner at the Loch Melfort Hotel and I cannot rate it highly enough. The welcome as we arrived set the tome for a very happy evening. The staff gave us unobtrusive, friendly attention and the food was superb. I am just sorry that it is so far for me to come back from New Zealand to try other menu options. The "icing on the cake" was being able to have our after dinner coffee in a smaller separate room which gave us more precious "family time".
I highly recommend this venue.

It couldn't be a nice spot looking west towards a group of coastal island and there is a National Trust of Scotland garden in the grounds (for which you have to pay if you're not a member). The hotel is very comfortable and our room was light and spacious with a balcony on the side with the view. We had everything we needed including delicious homemade shortbread. Unfortunately there were a few niggles. The wing with most of the bedrooms and a wooden walkway and stair which were scarily slippery when wet - and this is Scotland so they will often be wet. On the first night we te in the Chartroom II Bistro. The food was fine but it was a bit bleak and characterless. We ate in the restaurant. The menu looked lovely but didn't quite live up to its promise. We felt that a little less ambition and more attention to detail would have helped. Breakfast was lovely. They charge extra for a cooked breakfst but everything else was so nmice that we didn't need it. Service was very friendly and although I've got a few minor criticisms, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

With arguably the finest panoramic vista of any hotel on the West Coast of Scotland, the Loch Melfort Hotel is a very special location in Argyll which you will keep wanting to return to (as we have on numerous occasions over the last twenty years). It is a relatively short distance from Glasgow and the Central Belt, but in a different world entirely. We stayed on this occasion, as we have done before, in the timber annexe with a first floor balcony and a picture window facing out over a stunning sea view towards Luing and Jura beyond. Right from your arrival, nothing is too much trouble and all the staff are friendly, helpful and courteous and make you feel immediately at home. The food is excellent, especially the locally sourced seafood, and sitting outside on the sheltered south-facing patio taking in the panorama is especially pleasurable (we've even sat out here in February on previous occasions). The hotel is right next to the peaceful Arduaine gardens; well worth a visit at any time of year but especially the spring when the rhododendrons are in flower. All in all, there is a very magical ambiance here; it is an ideal place to escape the daily routine for a couple of days whist soaking up the peace and tranquility of the wonderful location.
