Owner description: PLEASE NOTE that this site is TEMPORARILY CLOSED. Tours of the site are therefore currently suspended. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric burial site, a complex made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. Earliest remains at the site date back to about 4000BC, and the complex was used over a span of many centuries, up to c. 2500 BC. The Hypogeum was first opened to the public in 1908. Due to its uniqueness, the site became very popular with visitors. Unfortunately, this had a negative impact on the delicate microclimate of the site. For this reason, a conservation project was conducted that also included the closure of the site for 10 years between 1990 and 2000. As a result of these studies, a new visiting system was established. Nowadays, only 10 visitors an hour are now allowed inside the Hypogeum for a maximum of 8 tours a day. This system is also complemented by an environmental control system which keeps temperature and humidity at required levels.Tickets for the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum should be bought well ahead of the chosen visiting date since tours are often fully booked weeks in advance. For more information visit Heritage Malta's website.

“A fantastic and unique site - a must do when in Malta”
Reviewed 24 November 2011

Ok this is not a cheap ticket and you definately have to book 2-3 weeks in advance (ideally on-line), but in my view this is fantastic (must do) thing to do when in Malta. The way the tour is structured helps you to appreciate the uniqueness of this 5,000 year old archaeological treasure; I felt that I was in a special place. Lots of questions remain unanswered but in a way that is an important part of the 'magic' of the site. Check the Archaelogical Museum out in Valetta for some helpful models of the site and also some stunning human form artefacts.

This is a great historical place very old. It is beautiful since the restoration. Make sure you get an advanced ticket as this is one of the best attractions in Malta.

“That was awesome.....”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

You can see nothing of the kind as well as I have never seen anything like it before. It is overwhelming impressions, breathtaking experience. No emotions no pictures or film can explain what emotions are in store for you there... It is like fantastic irreality combined with prehistoric sacrament....Probably it is just me who is crazy about all ancient and antique world, but speaking personally everyone must see this just once in a lifetime..
Be aware, if you can't prebook ticket ahead of time you have a chance to get one in the Fine Art Museum in Valetta. When I came there by 7:30 a.m.I was 2nd pretender to the tickets. That day they sold 8 tickets only and there were just 5 people who got lucky proprietors to the tickets for the next day tour as some bought more than 1tick. It happened that they had only one at 16:00 group for next day. Usually they arrange two group for 12.00 and 16.00. But we never know.....By opening hour 9.00 there was so long queue....that I was really sorry about other people. So do not miss your chance......
Ticket costs 25 eur, tour length -45 min.
Disadvantage (comparative) - viewers are limited in movement and space as all passageways equipped with pathways and stair railing...
No photographing or video filming.

“Like a time machine back thousands of years”
Reviewed 10 October 2011

First off, I do agree with other reviews that the tour feels a bit rushed, it can take a few minutes trying to even figure out what feature the audio guide is talking about, and I would have like more science and archeology and less supposition. It's also pricey, it's a bear to find if you're driving yourself (signs in the town send you in circles) and if you're short you best be at the front of the tour group or you may miss things. All that said, I'd do it again. The world's only known prehistoric temple complex dating back several thousand years, with rooms left just as they were when the place was sealed up millenia ago. Where else are you going to find that? So yes, there's much to be improved, but if you have the slightest interest in history or the origins of human civilization, don't sweat the small stuff.

“Book In Advance!!!”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

This was a truley unique World Hertitage sight. We did not have trouble booking reservations but I am sure summer visitors need to book in advance. You will never experience anything like this in your life. We were not allowed to photgraph once inside. My children are still talking about the tour til this day.We had to get a taxi to drive us to the site. There was only a small sign out front. If you can get to the Tarxien Temples ask someone for directions because you are so close.
