“Bit of a let down really”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 December 2013

Unfortunately for us this hotel did not live up to expectations. Its old, tired and in dire need to a major overhaul. The carpets are threadbare, there is a strange aroma about the place and to be honest although the staff are lovely they are flogging a dead horse. Time to invest before the place collapses around your ears.

Room Tip: You will need to upgrade to get a decent room

2 night break for 2 at the The Boat Hotel courtesy of a 'Livingsocial' deal. It was an extremely comfortable & characterful stay. The staff were warm & welcoming. The location was rural & quaint. The 10 mile round-trip walk in to Avimore over isolated and breathtaking moorland was exquisite. The room was more than adequate for the stay and the faint smell of wood smoke from the open fires filled the venue. The food was delicious. The evening meal was served in the semi-formal bar/dining room next to a roaring fire which made for a relaxed atmosphere. The buffet style breakfast & choice from the menu was very filling. I would definitely recommend the hotel for a romantic short stay and will certainly return.

Room Tip: Walk the walk from The Boat to Avimore and eat in the Mountain Cafe above the outdoor shop. The food...

We booked a Dinner, bed & breakfast stay from the Classic Britain site and having read the review's on Trip Advisor first we were keen to see for ourselves how good or bad it was.
We were met at reception by an infectiously happy white blonde manager who seemed genuinely interested in our journey to the hotel and she could not have been more professional.
We stayed in room 104 and it was nice enough, spacious and with tea/coffee facilities, albeit the kettle had to go on the floor as there were no sockets near enough to the table. The room also had a slant in the floor which does mess a bit with your mind but chalk this down to "ye olde world quirkiness". The bathroom is basic with slightly tired fixtures and fittings, but everything was there and the shower worked well enough although no comparison to modern power systems in newer hotels, but for us it did the job.
We struggled to get the heating on in the room but a quick word with the lovely manager at reception and she personally went up and fixed it, which didn't do my masculinity much good, but 10 out of 10 for service.
As for the restaurant we had absolutely no issues whatsoever. Yes, there are a few sofas in the dining room at the real fire with dining tables laid out around them but we liked it and it added to the quirkiness! The food though was fantastic. I had as a starter, Local haggis, turnip purée, potato croquette and whisky cream sauce, then for mains I went for, Highland venison casserole, chunky root veg and rosemary infused mash....finally I went for the Warm chocolate brownie, with confit orange pieces and a raspberry jus.
My partner opted for the Haggis as a starter followed by Seared hake fillet with crushed new potatoes, butternut purée and pesto dressing and finally the Sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and ice cream.
Personally having seen the sticky toffee pudding I wish I had gone for that as the warm brownies came as a trio of small cubes and it was gone in a flash...delicious but I could have had them twice over!
Breakfast was superb, plenty of choice and again such friendly staff. No complaints here either. Full Scottish breakfast....stuffed!
Check out was a breeze, no errors, no issues and when speaking with the staff about heading on to the Cairngorms funicular railway they gave us a 5% off card for the railway!
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. If your looking for a "Hilton" type of stay then go to the Hilton, but if you are happy with exceptional service, fabulous food and comfortable accommodations (albeit quirky) the The Boat Hotel is spot on.

Rooms comfortable, slept through the night. Breakfast tasty - however big plate made what was on it look light, serving was adequate it just looked small. Location good for what we wanted. Hotel looks like an old voctorian railway hotel so the corriders to the bedrooms do meander a bit. Two flights of stairs to our room not a problem but could be for less able people.
GRIPE - £4.30 for a pint, what's that about? The same brand and brew in a bottle from Tesco is only £2.00.

My partner and I stayed here a few weeks ago when we spent a weekend away from the city. It was lovely- our room was nice, the food was fantastic and the service was brilliant also! We really enjoyed ourselves here and would go back should we return to the area :)

We stayed for two nights midweek and were greeted by one of the happiest and friendly receptionists I think I've ever encountered. Our room was comfortable with all the trimmings including strawberry chocolates like I've never had before. The dinner was of a high standard but needed more vegetables and the breakfast was good apart from extremely lumpy porridge.

Front of house and reception areas nice but rooms decor awry . To get to room on 2nd floor there are too many stairs. Not good for mature but fit couple. My husband walks 20 miles per day as a postman but struggled here. The advertising in the room says fine dining with local produce used, yet. We had the worst breakfast here we have ever had anywhere in our lives. We had full English which consisted of a sliver of fatty brick hard bacon we could not cut,or eat, half an incinerated tomato, a disgusting frozen sausage, cold beans, a sliver of haggis so hard and of dubious quality we could not cut it never mind eat it. The fried egg was dry. Later that day we saw a delivery van belonging to one of the cheapest quality frozen food suppliers dropping off their delivery and it was clear this was the local produce they were boasting about ha ha. The evening meal was overpriced muck also. The staff were lovely but the food was awful. The beer at the bar was also overpriced at £4.50 per pint and no Scottish beer available. We could have had better food at any greasy spoon at half the price. We shall not be returning.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.
