“Charming staff but slightly shambolic service”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

We stayed for three nights in an estate room. The bathroom had been refurbished but not the room which was fine but let itself down on some details. There was a bracket to hold a bed drape but no drape was in place. This was not a problem but more serious was the total lack of pillow or mattress protectors. The bed was very comfy but the room was too hot for comfortable sleep.

Our price included breakfast but when we went down the first morning we found chaos and were sent away to wait as everyone had arrived for breakfast at the same time and the tables had not been set. This did not happen on the other two mornings. Breakfast was served by very friendly people although their full Scottish breakfast did not include lorne sausage or potato scones. I am not sure why breakfast came garnished with pea shoots.

The hotel is ideal for exploring the Cairngorm National Park and we were able to visit all the places that we planned. The service in the hotel lacks polish although all the staff are charming and helpful. Perhaps some training is required.

The hotel only has one disabled parking space which appears to be reserved for the managers car which meant my husband had to drop me off and then take the car away to park it while I waited for him. Unfortunately the two seats provided were often taken.

Room Tip: Request a refurbished room

Second visit in 6 months - because last one was a delight. But this stay was disappoining. Rooms tired and in need of update, especially bathrooms, service variable, breakfast very slow, order was wrong and came with soggy toast - all piled on top of each other (did the staff even care!). Please invest in staff training and refurbishment, this is a lovely spot but is in need of SOS. Hope to return but only if there are changes.

Stayed here for two nights on a voucher deal last week. We found the staff friendly and welcoming. Our voucher included dinner from the table hote menu and on the first night my husband ordered a chorizo salad - 20 minutes later the staff member who appeared to be the restaurant manager came back to tell him that there was none left. Did not understand the delay in telling him. Anyway he chose another starter and was allowed to choose from the a la carte as one of the other three starters was also finished. On the first night my soup could have been warmer and I had to send my main course back as the potatoes were cold. We were not the only ones having problems. The quality of the food was excellent and the problems we had were the kitchen's fault not the serving staff. On the second night the table hote menu was exactly the same as the night before which was slightly disappointing. Soup of the day was admittedly different. This time the food was hot and the service from the kitchen much better. Breakfast was very good but we did speak to some other guests who had been earlier than us and they were complaining about long delays. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a garden room. We had upgraded to an estate room but the hotel had upgraded us again. It was very nice but I doubt if I would pay £50 extra per night if we had not been given it by the hotel. The soundproofing is VERY poor. We were fortunate to be at the end of the corridor. The bathroom was fine although the shower was temperamental - we did mention this on leaving to the lady who cleaned our room and on departure we mentioned it again to the receptionist but the domestic had already been there and told the manager. The staff in the hotel are wonderful and it is very clean. We certainly got value for money.

We returned for a one night stay in this cute spot and were unfortunately left a little disappointed!

A few years ago we had a winter break here and were really impressed by its charm and quirky 'Scottish' theme. This time we felt it was a bit shabby, lacking any personal touch and not great value for money. We stayed in a Garden room which was certainly not luxurious as advertised. We had expected the same traditional Scottish decor but found this room (in annex) to be modern and cheap quality. When we rang to ask for an alternative room, the staff were less than interested.
The food was average and staff friendly but inefficient.

Before writing any critical review I prefer to advise the hotel management. Three days have passed and I am still waiting for that information! Admittedly the receptionist was pleasant and noted my comments.... Our room, admittedly, was pleasant and we had stayed several times here previously. On this occasion it was welcome to breakfast. The menu advised we ask for croissants...sorry we have none. There was no marmalade...sorry we have run out. The menu advised "our own muesli" sorry we have none. The menu advised, fruit salad...which comprised a few thin slices of orange.....We got our toast....six slices piled one upon another on a side plate.... Our cooked breakfast arrived 3/4 an hour after its being ordered and the mushrooms were completely burned to render them uneatable, the scrambled egg portion the smallest ever seen!. There was no apology...no one was in charge...no one cared!
The next day admittedly our service was somewhat swifter with more staff on duty but we talked to another table who had to endure the 3/4 hour wait with fish the served up cold. In our case the breakfast sausages were also cold and so-called toast hardly had any contact with the toaster!
This once proud and reliable place this once was has certainly sunk now without trace

Room Tip: The receptionist is pleasant and listens to complaints but does nothing about it....betware

Don't get me wrong, it's not the Ritz [our room could have done with a little TLC] but it's in an amazing part of the world and the staff are a credit to the hotel/owners. They are all so pleasant and make your stay so much better. The food was nice and the public areas [bar etc.,] made us jealous that it wasn't our local! I don't get one of the previous reviews about the hard bed because ours was just about perfect and the pillows were better.

We look forward to returning very soon. I just hope the staff haven't changed!

My husband booked a 2 night stay for my birthday, we would have had a better time at home. Choosing the 'King Bed Deluxe Garden Room' as an added treat, upgrading to this cost an extra £50 a night. Our advice is not to waste money doing this as there is nothing deluxe about the room and the description Garden Room should be replaced by 'family room'. Part of the online description talks of experiencing 'deep and restful sleep'. We had no rest from children and dogs running around in the rooms either side of us, and outside our patio doors on the stretch of rough grass that is supposed to be the 'garden'. We complained to staff, but there's nothing really they can do as the children and dogs are legitimately there. The garden rooms are an extension to the main building, the rooms have thin plasterboard walls, you can hear people sneezing in the next room! On the second morning (my birthday) we were woken by very young children running up and down the long corridor outside our room. We were booked for a late check-out, but left as soon as we had breakfast. The description of the bathroom says Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, a rainfall shower and deep soak bath. We got cheap toiletries, an ordinary shower and an ordinary bath. The food we had was really nice, but on the first night half of the dishes were off the menu leaving very little choice. The Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Couples don't choose the garden rooms
