Tired decor, dated furniture, below average food. The room was like a cell. Only upside was the pleasant staff. Needs a total refurb and a new chef. Wouldn`t recommend the hotel to anybody. Didn`t even stay for breakfast.

Room Tip: If you cant get anywhere else get a room at the front - lot of noise at the back.

Gorgeous room which was so much bigger than expected with a view of the gardens on one side and the steam railway on the other. Bed very comfy for lazy lie ins and a generous tea tray with biscuits and good section of drinks. Quiet every night. Ate every night as quite limited choice in the village. Food was beautiful and well priced for quality, but the service was spotty. First two nights had to ask twice for water for the table which on the second night didn't arrive until we'd finished our meal. There are no allergy warnings on the menu and that caused a change to desert after the first bite on one evening. Interesting on the third night with the chef giving the head waiter a hard time in the bar area. Add a few more servers with a bit more English and would have 5 stars.

Room Tip: Without seeing the other rooms it's hard to tell. Ask for a view of the railway.

Stayed here for 1 night having visited and had an excellent time 2 years previously. Standards have slipped. Room was nice and well furnished with various teas, coffee, shortbread, water etc. bathroom could however do with an upgrade. A minor point but the loo roll is what i would describe as low grade! The water pressure in the shower was virtually non existent and having been out on a lengthy hike it's not what youre after. Mentioned to reception who said it was probably just a busy time but same again happened in the morning - yeah probably was a busy time but system should be able to cope. We ate in the restaurant and the food was good if a little pricey! Service however left a lot to be desired...we were asked to order food before being offered drinks....seemed to be the way as i saw many tables go through what we did to order drinks before food! Ordered a bottle of white wine and had a bottle of red plonked down on the table! When we advised this was the wrong wine they came back with the white and plonked that on the table. No ask as to whether this was the correct wine, no option to try, no offer to pour and no wine cooler!! Basic basic stuff. What we had to eat was ok but the whole experience not great especially for the price paid. We love this area but not sure i'd return to this hotel which is unfortunate given the great time we had had previously.

We've stayed here several times always booking one of the excellent "garden rooms".

It is an excellent location for touring, village is charming and we have always found the staff at the hotel very friendly and helpful.

Only slight disappointment this time was the "Bistro" style dinner on nights one and two which lacked real choice and seemed a bit "conveyor belt".

Dining room experience on our third night was much better.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the garden rooms.

Fab location. Funny restaurant experiences - with guests complaining to waitress /manager over terrible service who was then attacked by another guest who was the managers brother - unreal - spoilt the experience - good hotel rubbish restaurant

Room Tip: like birds like boat of gar ten

Friendly staff but English was a struggle for a number of them. Hotel needs some TLC but it`s in a good location and the food is good. We stayed at the hotel two years ago but it wasn`t as good this trip as before, which was a shame.

After reading very variable reviews on TA regarding dining, tried to book at Andersons but full.
So arranged to eat in hotel and pleasantly surprised. On arrival asked staff to reserve us a window table in the bar/dining area and got very nice table overlooking the steam train. Service was prompt and food excellent. At breakfast , again very prompt service and great breakfast with the black pudding being nicely spicey and the Smokies superb.
Great ambience at hotel with many lounging outside in the sun when we arrived. And this area still in the sun at 8pm.
Unlike many Scottish hotels of this age and location, it does not have a separate public bar for locals, so I can imagine it may be quite different at weekends as no other hotel in town.
Yes our standard room was a bit tired looking and the first floor hall carpet was in a very poor state as others have commented.
But overall we really enjoyed our one night break.
