“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2011

Stayed in room 201 which looks like it has been recently decorated.
Nice appointed room.
The hotel sign light outside may affect light sleepers but it did not affect my stay.
A plus that there is readily available free wi-fi, which is an annoyance when hotels charge.
Only minor down point is that you have to rely on on street parking.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2011

I stayed here for 1 night. I booked the room through Trip Advisor and got it for 25% of the hotels advertised rate. It is located on the main street, which is undergoing improvement, opposite a pleasant church. I was allocated a room on the third floor overlooking the church and was at first worried about the clock that chimed on the hour. In fact the clock does not chime after 2300 and before 0600. The reception is immediately to the right of the main entrance which is straight off the street and is shared with the host point for the restaurant.

I had been a bit worried that the hotel advertises that check in is only up till 2200 and check out doesn’t start till 1030, and I had a late arrival and early departure, but Reception was staffed much later and earlier.

There was a small but functional lift to all floors although a steep staircase was available. The third floor was on slightly different levela and that might make access difficult for some. The downstairs public rooms are bright clean and modern in appearance. However, on my floor the wallpaper was being renewed and the bare walls were a bit off-putting. The toilets downstairs are protected by a code lock, presumably to prevent casual use.

The main part of my room was 3m x 3m with a lobby area and a small bathroom (1m x 1.5m). The room was equipped with a large double bed with a most impressive carved headboard, a full length desk/dressing table unit, and two bedside tables to match the bedhead. There was a small wardrobe, suitable for a single user. The bathroom had a over bath shower, toilet and sink. The carpet in the main room was plain as were the walls.

The room generally worked well, it was clean on arrival, with a well stocked hospitality tray (no biscuits) and a 24 inch flat screen TV with a range of freeview channels and radio stations. It also contained a DVD. I thought the room was cold on arrival but the radiator was effective. Some down sides - the thin bedspread and sheets, the thin and ill fitting curtains, the ironing board just leaning against one wall, the plastic wall covering in the bathroom and the size of the bath which was on the small side. Also, I was not able to lock the door.

I slept reasonably well on the comfortable pillows. There was a soap a shampoo and a bath gel in the bathroom which were pleasant, towels were a bit thin but clean.
There was a hairdryer. Lighting levels were limited. The window could be opened.
Breakfast was fine. Breakfast service began at 0700, I arrived at 0705 to be told the Chef didn’t arrive till 0715. Till then I attacked the cold buffet which was adequate without being generous. The cooked breakfast was however fine, freshly prepared and quite tasty. Service was extremely pleasant and efficient and demonstrated a real desire to be helpful.

I returned to have a meal before catching the taxi home and enjoyed a beef and ale pie from the a la carte menu which was excellent. Again the service was very good and the staff very pleasant and helpful. No complaint but I was getting a bit anxious that it took, with only 12 other Diners in the room, 30 minutes for my simple meal to be prepared – but it was of good quality and very hot.

My scoresout of 10? - Car Parking 6; Accessibility 9; Reception/Check Out 9; Size of Room 9; Facilities in Room 7; Hotel Facilities 6; Hotel Decor 6; Service 8; Food 8; Value for Money 9.

One issue, whilst I was dining a couple arrived at 1750 and were seated. The waitress didn’t arrive to take their order till one minute past 6, and wouldn’t allow them to order from the lunch menu that ‘ended at 6’. I didn’t think that was particularly generous.

My partner and I stopped off at this hotel for a meal and drinks after a stay in Edinburgh. It has recently been refurbished to a high standard, in both the restaurant and bar area. Restaurant had a nice relaxed atmosphere with lovely music playing in the background. Choice of food on the menu was excellent, something to suit all tastes and the service was prompt. We ate from the A La Carte, portion sizes just right and choice on wine list was also perfect.

Stayed on a Saturday night, arrived mid afternoon, one downside is no hotel car park, only on street parking, however reception advised OK to park on single yellow line outside hotel as no wardens on a Saturday. Nice and comfy room with a good big bathroom and a decent hot working shower ( not electric one). Super breakfast with good locally sourced produce. will stay there again

Having recently visited this hotel, I would recommend it to anyone! The food was great! High quality food but reasonably priced for anyone! Also, Tapas are available. Great to see in a local hotel! Staff were very friendly! Would recommend this hotel to anyone!!!!

Stopped for a drink and a meal and ended up having excellent tapas. The service was great too. A couple of tables outside on a fairly busy road but overlooking a lovely church so it was very pleasant. There's also a cafe bar and a separate restaurant. I understand there are new owners who are certainly turning it around. I can't comment on the rooms as we didn't stay but I'm sure they will be up to scratch if the rest of the place is anything to go by.
