We received a lovely welcome from the landlord who even recommended some local restaurants we might enjoy as Suddaby's does not do food. The bar boasts some interesting real ales though, and the beer shop looked like a real ale lover's paradise. The array of CAMRA awards on the walls attests to the good standards. The accommodation is at the back of the pub through the beer garden and a covered area that is used for live music. I'd imagine it's noisy when an act is playing, but we were there on a Monday night and had a very quiet night's sleep woken only by the rain pattering on the window. The rooms are in an old stable block that was once part of the micro brewery. Our room was spacious - one double bed, a single and a sofa didn't make it appear full - which made the poor use of space in the en suite bathroom something of a puzzle. A full size bath is squeezed between two walls making getting into it to take a shower quite a tricky manoeuvre! Some of that generous room space could surely have been sacrificed for a slightly more workable bathroom? The room was cosy and we slept well, but some bits and bobs need some TLC such as cupboard interiors and slightly rickety furniture. The conservatory where we had breakfast was also something of a thoroughfare for what seemed to be workmen doing a job there. It also seemed very clearly a bit of space coerced into use as an occasional breakfast room. With, again, a little bit of TLC that impression could easily be corrected. Breakfast was lovely, prepared on a well loved and elderly AGA. All in all, such nice people and such an interesting place, but a tad pricey we felt.
