Suddaby's Crown Hotel

We received a lovely welcome from the landlord who even recommended some local restaurants we might enjoy as Suddaby's does not do food. The bar boasts some interesting real ales though, and the beer shop looked like a real ale lover's paradise. The array of CAMRA awards on the walls attests to the good standards. The accommodation is at the back of the pub through the beer garden and a covered area that is used for live music. I'd imagine it's noisy when an act is playing, but we were there on a Monday night and had a very quiet night's sleep woken only by the rain pattering on the window. The rooms are in an old stable block that was once part of the micro brewery. Our room was spacious - one double bed, a single and a sofa didn't make it appear full - which made the poor use of space in the en suite bathroom something of a puzzle. A full size bath is squeezed between two walls making getting into it to take a shower quite a tricky manoeuvre! Some of that generous room space could surely have been sacrificed for a slightly more workable bathroom? The room was cosy and we slept well, but some bits and bobs need some TLC such as cupboard interiors and slightly rickety furniture. The conservatory where we had breakfast was also something of a thoroughfare for what seemed to be workmen doing a job there. It also seemed very clearly a bit of space coerced into use as an occasional breakfast room. With, again, a little bit of TLC that impression could easily be corrected. Breakfast was lovely, prepared on a well loved and elderly AGA. All in all, such nice people and such an interesting place, but a tad pricey we felt.

I agree with Boudicca's comments below - Suddaby's is friendly, but the accommodation is scruffy and unfortunately not worth the asking price. Our room was clean, but the bathroom was tiny, and the room décor very dated and worn out looking.

Breakfast was fine, and we were made to feel very welcome, but overall I can't recommend Suddaby's at these prices.

Great Hotel friendly service, we had a fantastic night there there was a group on Jules and the gang who were excellent, the beer is also very nice and very reasonable prices would recommend to any one stopping in Malton.

On 1st impression my family where not pleased with the hotel, however we were shown to the family room at the back of the Hotel in a converted stable block and the room was great ! If you are a family it is warm , spacious with good storage and bathroom facilities, we only stayed one night . I do think it could be better lit at the entrance and stairs. The view from the windows is not the best and when you drive around the back I did think My God ! Just needs to be looked at from a guest view not a punter from the beer garden/ gig night view. You have to walk through the back of beer garden / gig area to get into the hotel and this is not pleasant . Whilst the breakfast was great the conservatory is terrible where you eat it , although the china is of good quality! Again if I could do a hotel inspector refit I would as the owners are great and that's what was evident through out our stay! Well done for great Customer Service guys !! They even offered bacon sandwiches and juice for my teenage girls for the room as they would not come down for breakfast ! Again great Customer Service! Overall good value for money but please if you have any spare cash in the future invest it in the Conservatory, gig area and beer garden ( even a tidy up ) then up your room rates slightly to see the return .
Eden camp well worth a visit and The New Malton for evening meals is fab !!

In spite of a warm welcome, Suddaby's left much to be desired. On driving into the car park at the rear of the 'hotel', our hearts sank and sank even lower when we had to walk past loads of empty barrels through a large, freezing part of the brewery to get to Reception. As I
said we received a warm if distracted welcome from the landlord who seemed to be doing everything himself. We were given a family room up an iron staircase (one double room and one twin connected) because apparently the carpet in the other available room was a bit threadbare. There was a wooden floor in this one so carpets weren't a problem. The room frankly needed a good cleaning and the bathroom was minute. Bedclothes and towels were clean but not very good quality. It had character and there was very little noise at night. Breakfast was good and the landlord had installed a heater for us in the rather small conservatory. Coffee was excellent, best thing about the place. All in all, the people were nice but we have stayed in much better places for the same price or less.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

The other review states it all quite accurately. Neil and Karen Suddaby are priceless - as much so as the various pedigree of regular who frequent the excellent and extremely friendly bar. The bar always has about 5 good ales on draught, as well as cider. Suddaby's also have a really good wine and beer shop (which can be opened on request out-of-hours) which is by far the best in town.

I've visited Sudds (as it's known around these parts) after discovering it by accident, quite regularly over the last few years and consider it one of the most unpretentious, yet warm and welcoming establishments one can find. The rooms are always, clean and cosy and the Suddaby's always willing to provide extra towels, sheets on request.

Malton itself is a quiet traditional market town, perfectly located centrally for enjoying the coast, Moors and Wolds.

Anyway, I'll be back for the Easter Beer Festival! Suddaby's have three Beer Festivals a year, and a visit to one is a must!

In this traditional Yorkshire market town you will find the Suddaby’s Crown Hotel, a traditional market town hotel and public house.

Reception is at the bar, the welcome is very warm and friendly. I had booked a standard non en suite room which was on the second floor. The room was more than adequate with hand basin and clean linen and towels, with the bathroom adjacent.

The breakfast was brilliant, freshly cooked and not swimming in grease and the coffee was freshly ground, which as a coffee connoisseur was most welcome.

Suddaby’s has a reputation in Yorkshire, for excellent real ale and I have to say you will not be disappointed. A fantastic warm welcome will greet you in the bar, one of the friendliest places I have ever had the pleasure to drink in. The food offering extends to a packet of crisps, a pickled egg or some nuts; however there are some great restaurants and take away’s within two minutes walk.

The best place to stay in Malton that I have found, please reside here and not the Talbot Hotel or Green Man Inn, both of which are appalling.
