Me and my wife where driving around Durham during our holiday up North, and we stumbled upon this place. We thought we would stop for a coffee but instead ended up having Sunday lunch at this place. The food was amazing, home cooked and the staff where very helpful. Definitely a little gem of a place in what appeared to us Londoners as the middle of nowhere!!!

Stayed here in June 2013. Husband was greeted on arrival by owner denying we had made a booking at all! After seeing proof of the booking we had to stay in a cottage in the grounds of the restaurant as there was no room available for us. Had to wait for old rayburn to warm up the cottage and heat the water before we could shower. Flies in the restaurant for evening meal. Not what we expected.

This is the 4th time my husband and I have stayed at Cafe 1618 and hopefully it won't be our last as we love the 'home from home' experience we get everytime we stay there. The very personal and warm welcome from both Bev and John goes a long way to make you feel welcomed. The quality of the food served is consistently of a very high standard, excellent value for money and in our opinion the best in the village. The holiday cottage is beautiful and quaint, it affords all that is required of any holiday hideaway oozing with character and the luxury of a fantastic arga which our whippets struggle to move away from!!.
In our experience of booking with Cafe 1618 for the last 5 years, nothing is too much trouble and if there is anything in particular that you require then you just have to ask and they will do all they can to provide whatever you need and more!!
We absolutely love visiting Middleton in Teesdale but it wouldn't be the same If we didn't stay at Cafe 1618, we absolutely recommend it 100% so give it a go before everyone finds out just how good it really is!!

Not expecting to get a booking for 11 of us at short notice on a sat night we walked into a warm clean welcoming cafe. Lots of choice and with a couple of fussy kids all our needs were catered for. The menu was simple and balanced and priced just right. A fantastic meal in cosy surroundings and nothing was too much trouble .

It's special because John & Bev make you feel so welcome. The food is excellent and the service was friendly and informal. You are made to feel like one of the locals and one of the family. The atmosphere was brilliant and we had a fabulous evening with them all. Maybe too much wine!!!
The following morning John & Bev were opening up at 9.00am and offered us coffee before we resumed our bike trip. When we rode away we felt we were leaving friends.
I would also add that the place was spotless and would suggest the two reviewers who found it otherwise re-visit 1618. We certainly will.
