Firstly let me say how friendly and helpful the staff are BUT, it was summer and I arrived at 21h08 to find no food (hotel or town) the sash windows were a bad fit, the free standing room furniture has a jumble sale quality, the carpets were worn, the paintwork was chipped, there was black mold in the grout between the tiles BUT the breakfast was excellent

Dear Martin B,
I'm so sorry that you went hungry when you visited us last August. The kitchen staff had finished work and gone home; you just missed them. The fact that there wasn't anywhere else open either just added to your inconvenience and it seems it didn't shine a favourable light on the rest of your stay. Great that you appreciated our hospitality in other respects though! For the benefit of readers: this is a 17th century coach house with original features, including the windows, all are sound and are actually very sound in this particular room but not in comparison with contemporary versions. The carpet isn't new but neither is it worn. The furniture isn't of the fitted corporate hotel type; its sturdy old wooden furniture which we prefer to the soulless alternative. There is never any mold anywhere in our bathrooms but the grout does get discoloured as it comes close to our due attention.
Regards,
Dave

We stayed here for one night on a B,B and evening dinner deal. What a bargain! The hotel has a homely feel, friendly staff, a fabulous log fire to sit by, delicious food. . . Need I go on? The rooms were what we expected-clean and tidy with crisp bed linen and fluffy white towels. No complaints and we will be back.

We decided to have a short break away from home and found this hotel did the trick perfectly. Our room was a great size, ideal for our little one to crawl around. The food was excellent and extremely good value. The staff were absolutely great and couldn't do enough for us. They were lovely to our young son and keen to accommodate anything we needed for him. It's also a great base for the Durham Dales. We shall be back!

This was the second time we have stayed at this hotel, it's perfect for our needs. We needed a short weekend break to escape the stresses at home and as if by fate there was a groupon deal of £59 per night including dinner and breakfast, we booked it straight away on the Thursday for arrival on Friday! We were a late arrival but that was no problem! Breakfast was delicious cooked to order in front of the fireplace in the bar, dinner was perfect really good value! The rooms themselves are old fashioned but this gives it character! The hotel is ideally located for many local attractions, whilst we stayed here we visited Beamish, The Wensledale cheese factory, High force waterfalls and enjoyed the beautiful scenery! The nearby butter tubs rock leading up to Tan inn (the highest inn in the uk) was the location of our engagement back in July so this area will always be very special to us. A return visit is planned for the honeymoon but no doubt we will be back before then to our little retreat!

We went to this hotel a couple of weeks ago with our friends and for £89 two nights B+B with evening meal on the first night ( Groupon ) it was well worth it. The staff and food was top notch. It only missed out on 5 due to the rooms do need a bit of an upgrade but i can understand that a small family run hotel can only do this when the cash is available. To be honest it was a nice break and would come again

Room Tip: Great for walks and close to Barnard Castle / Bowes

Dear kevin f,
You're right; rolling improvements are constantly underway but proceed within our means. As a family run hotel with a fantastic, loyal and happy staff we dont provide sleekly fitted hotel rooms, neither do we provide a detached and uninterested workforce that comes with corporate hotels.
Thanks for your great review, we hope you visit us again and notice the improvements!

A warm welcome awaited after a cold days travelling, the owner showed us to our room, which was clean and comfortable, yes it needed a bit of TLC decorating wise but it was warm and welcoming. We had our evening meal in the bar (the dining room was set for meals) but as we were one of only a handfull of guests staying that evening and the roaring fire was inviting us to stay, we were shown to our table, the meal was delicious and very filling. Breakfasts the next morning were hot as they were cooked to order and also very filling. Everything was local produce and cooked just the way I like it.

Stayed for 1 night, Saturday 6th December, groupon deal £59 (£10 surcharge for sat night) which included b&b plus evening meal, 3 courses for 2 people.
My partner and I appreciate little breaks away as we have 2 children, our youngest being 12 months old, so we were so looking forward to our stay at this hotel.
I'm happy to say that we weren't disappointed. Yes, the decor is on the old fashioned side but I prefer that to soulless chain hotel decor. Everywhere was absolutely spotless, staff were friendly and helpful. The choices for the evening meal were exceptional and we were impressed with the food. Even if you aren't on a groupon deal the food is excellent value for money.
The bar is cosy with a real fire and drinks are reasonably priced.
The bed was comfortable and my partner and I enjoyed a good night's sleep with no noise disturbance even though we were situated at the front of the hotel on the main road.
Breakfast was served between 8-9, help yourself to fruit juice, cereals and fruit and then select tea or coffee and cooked items from the menu.
Overall we were very impressed, can't think of any negatives...a great place to "chill" and we hope to return in the future.
Thank you!
