The Moorcock have a short but interesting menu, consisting mainly of steaks supplied by local butcher, Joe Simpson. Six of us chose a variety of steaks, fillet, sirloin and rump, and a range of sizes, 8oz and 12oz (16oz also available). They arrived cooked to perfection ranging from medium rare to well done, they are cooked on a mexican charcoal grill and tasted delicious. Steaks are served with chips and a salad with a range of extra's available, we had homemade onion rings which were coated in crisp, dry batter. The sweet list has four choices, two of our party chose lime cheese cake, home made using ricotta cheese, very nice. There are other options on the menu including vegetarian. Two real ales were available on the night, Red Kite and Golden Sheep, both well kept. In summary good quality, locally sourced ingredients, served simply. Service was helpful, friendly and attentive.

Went with friends to try the food and we were not disappointed.Friendly and efficient staff served us promptly and we were shown to one of the large circular tables that now feature in the lounge. The steaks arrived quickly and were delicious having been cooked on a barbecue in the kitchen. The large chips were the best I've tasted in along time. There was a good selection of beers and the Black Sheep was well kept. A 12 oz rib eye steak was £12.95,sirloin and rump the same and fillet for £4 more, all supplied by local farms and butchers.
The recent change of ownership and the refurbishment has obviously been successful and it was very busy. The bar was full of youngsters having a great time.
The outside has been equipped with lighting which makes the place look great as well as making the car park safe.
I hope that the new owners keep up the standard and keep the prices to a reasonable level.
Of course the success means booking is now essential.

Enjoyed a lunch out here recently. Horrible weather but warm and cosy in the moorcock. It had been closed for awhile so it is nice to see it open again. Lunch was very nice and beer good too. Only possible problem was that their debit card machine was not working so pleased that our friends had cash with them to pay for our lunch too, otherwise we could have been doing the washing up!!!!

We spent 2 nights at the Moorcock Inn. On the first night we went down to the bar (where we could take our dog) and had a couple of drinks. Found the locals and staff very friendly and welcoming. The next morning we had a full English breakfast which had the nicest free range eggs with it (the owner will ask what sort of eggs you want too) with the biggest pot of tea I've ever seen.
After we went for a walk in the lovely surroundings then into Barnard Castle for a spot of shopping. That night we ate in the restaurant - I had chicken in stilton sauce with proper homemade chips which was delicious. Went back into the bar for more chat with the locals.
The rooms are basic, ours didn't have a shower but I think other ones did. If you want 5* luxury I wouldn't recommend it but if you want somewhere friendly and comfy to rest your head it is a fab place to go. The bonus for us was taking our dog (we paid a very reasonable surcharge for this for extra room cleaning - good for dog owners to know and also to know that your room is well cleaned afterwards) and she was made very welcome too, the owners gave her treats and made sure she had water when we were in the bar.

We arrived on the Friday and was greeted by the friendly and welcoming owner, Mark, and he gave us the key to our room. Our room was lovely. It was very big with an en suite and a comfortable double bed. We had a great view out of the front of the pub of just fields that went on for miles. A perfect location for walkers we thought. We went downstairs to have some dinner and a few drinks. The menu was great, full of home cooked food. I got the garlic mushrooms which were to die for and my husband got duck pate. For mains I got fish pie and he got steak. We were very impressed. The following day we went into Barnard Castle where there is lots of lovely independant shops selling quirky gifts. We then drove the Eggleston Hall gardens but the weather turned bad so we went back to the pub. We decided to go into the back room and have a few games of pool. There we got chatting to the locals who were so friendly and we sat drinking with them until around 8 before we went next door and had another lovely meal. The breakfasts were spot on too, Toast, cereal, fresh orange, tea or coffee, all topped off with a full english. On the second day I had Poached eggs on toast and the eggs were cooked to perfection. On our last day we got up and went to a place called Gibsons Cave which one of the locals had tols us about. There is a short walk from the cark park but then you come across this waterfall and you can actually walk behind the waterfall, its great. We then went on to high force. The pub is a perfect spot to stay for anyone wanting to enjoy the local attractions i.e. Barnard castel, Eggleston Hall, Bowes Museum, Raby Castle, High Force. If you want a welcoming, friendly place with good food then The Moorcock is for you.
