We visited on a rainy Tuesday morning in September and had a most interesting and enjoyable time.
The house and gardens are beautiful.
Do not miss the talk in the great hall, it lasts about 15 minutes and is fascinating. These are held regularly, check the times when you get there.
All the guides were friendly and knowledgeable.
We were there about two hours, had the weather been good we would have spent longer in the grounds.

The entrance fee of £9.50 (if you are not a national trust member) is quite pricey but there is plenty to see and do. The volunteers are really friendly and knowledgeable and there was plenty to see in the hall itself. Children are well catered for. The tea shop is lovely, the staff were really friendly and there were some local lancashire options on the menu. Food is reasonably priced and delicious. There is a shop. The hall is right next to the Liverpool and Leeds canal, so there is the option to walk along the canal and also through the woods. The gardens are beautiful and really pleasant to walk around. Depending on how thoroughly you want to explore, you could spend most of the day here. A really good day out.

A lovely historic building next to the canal (Rufford Spur of the Leeds Liverpool canal)
It's been several years since we last visited but it was nice to revisit and also stroll through the woodland area surrounding the hall.
The Great Hall was about to undergo some renovations in the form wattle and daub being replaced in some of the walls.
We look forward to seeing the outcome of the repairs on our next visit.

Beautiful house with beautiful gardens. Cafe, toilets. Not for people with wheelchairs or strollers. Can only take photos of the main hall which is a shame. I went on a day which was free. Normal price would have been £10 per person which i think is not worth this amount. There are many stewards who are very knowledgeable if you have any questions.

It's a very atmospheric hall , nicely maintained and with enthusiastic stewards dotted about the place who are only too willing to talk to you and impart their knowledge.

Feels a lot less formal and far friendlier than some National Trust sites I could mention !

The little cafe is good value as well and again is run by cheerful enthusiastic people.

A good day out.
