Took boat over with my tour group and walked the trail to Pitt Head and back. Views and wildlife are incredible. Be sure to bring snacks and water as there are no concession stands. There are restrooms at the beginning of the trail. Anyone with an average level of fitness should be able to complete the trail at their own pace.

Excellent way to spend a day! We water-taxied up to Anchorage (great views along the way), then walked the Pitt Loop and headed back to Marahau on foot. Stopping at whatever beach you select is a MUST!

We did motueka to anchorage, says 3-4h but really depends if you stop a lot. We stopped at every single lookout to take photos and to stare into the ocean. Took about 3h. The distance may be a bit more but it’s mostly flat- easy to walk quickly and there were even people jogging it.

Catch a water taxi from different parts of it to return home

If you want to walk an incredible bit of nz “bush” country look no further than this coast path.
The path is well maintained well signposted and a breath taking part of New Zealand. There are so many options for trekking, free camping in the huts and water activities. We walked via Anchorage ( water taxi’d in ) up to cleopatra’s waterfall back to Maharau. It took a few hours but that’s only because of the many stops we took to take it all in.
Good for the soul and recharging the mind this one.

A friend and I did 3 nights/4 days of Abel Tasman and camped the whole time. Carrying 15-20kg packs each. No prior training done. Low to moderate fitness levels prior to walk.
Day 1 - Marahau to Te Pukatea Bay
Started at 10.30am. Got in at 3.30pm. Pretty cruisy walk most of the way in. Lunch stop at Stillwell Bay where we quickly learnt that the Weka steal things from your packs! A good warm up for what was to come. We had Te Pukatea Bay campsite to ourselves and soon found out wekas can open zips and get into your tent! A poo on my pillow and a packing cell stolen! Boilable cooking and drinking water available and a loo.
Day 2 - Te Pukatea Bay to Onetahuti Camp
Started at 9am. Got in 4.30pm. We left to cross Torrent Bay 4 hours before low tide. We managed this but had navigate the shallowest route. At one point, for about 5 metres, we were hip- waist deep and propped our packs higher up so they didn’t get wet. Had lunch at Bark Bay at 1pm ish then proceeded to cross the water crossing which was perfectly timed with the low tide. One other group in camp that night. Big beach camp, with a camp kitchen area, boilable drinking/cooking water and lots of loos.
Day 3 - Onetahuti - Anapai Bay
Started at 9.30am. Got in 5.30pm. Got to Bark Bay water crossing just after 12, which was 3 hours before low tide and just a bit too deep to cross. We crossed just after 1 and comfortably got across only water just above our knees at the deepest point. There is a little stream not long after this crossing to wash feet. Tonga Quarry to Totaranui map is currently incorrect. There is a closed piece of the track and the replacement track is extremely steep and hard going! Totaranui to Anapai is a fairly easy 1 hr. We had the camp to ourselves and experienced a 4.7 magnitude earthquake at midnight!
Day 4 - Anapai Bay to Totaranui Water Taxi
Easy 1 hour walk back to Totaranui to await the water taxi back to Marahau. We used Aqua Taxis. Great service. We paid for a shower at The Barn, before having lunch at The Park Cafe and then caught a pre-booked Nelson Cabs Taxi back to the airport.

All in all, we loved our 4 days hiking. Our bodies held up well considering no training. Magnesium pills each night, voltaren gel, stretching and definitely a cold water soak of the legs in the ocean is recommended each day! This was our first great hike and we are buzzing! So beautiful.

We found out that Aqua Taxis also do bag drops between camps if you don’t want to carry your packs daily.
