“"Idyllic"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

In a word “idyllic”. My wife and I spent two nights here at the end of December. We couldn’t believe how perfect the location. The lodge itself, quite small really, was nevertheless spacious and really gave the sense of living in the rainforest. Beautiful accommodation, simple, comfortable, built into the landscape, eco-friendly. Delicious food. Excellent bar. Welcoming wood fires by night (it was chilly outside). But what really made it was the team, headed by manager Suzanne Wells, Rene, Ben, Theo, Leo were able to turn their hand at anything and were an incredible team. I can’t praise Awaroa too highly. Sea kayaking, treks, (tramps in New Zealand) through the forest, transportation, conveying the baggage, everything to order. A word about some of the earlier reviews. Management of Awaroa was taken over by Peppers some time in 2012. Before then evidently service was ho hum. It’s completely different now. A must visit if ever there was one.

We wanted to spend Christmas day somewhere isolated and quiet. We couldn't make a better choice. The lodge is not big therefore is quiet...the rooms, right in the bush, are spacious and confortable. We had the one with the view on the wetland and sunset...stunning.
The dinner room is also extremely peaceful, romantic and right on the wetland. The menu is not that big and it is not changing towards the days but the quality of the food and the way it is cooked is delicious. We found the restaurant not too expensive given the exclusivity of the location. The rooms are probably overpriced but you probably pay the exclusivity of the place.
The Christmas Buffet as well as the breakfast one have been generous although gets quickly out of food at any time and it is quite challenging to get it replenished.
We flew in by Helicopter...great to see the scenery of the park from above and we left the loge by taxi boat....another great trip.
Overall it is a (relatively expensive) experience I truly recommend.

My wife and I stayed at the lodge in March when we were in need of a few days to unwind. We were so glad we chose to stay there as it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the National Park. We loved the tranquility, quality of the food & service, and the rustic charm of the place.

We chose to fly in from Nelson Airport as it was too late in the day to travel by land to Kaiteriteri and take a water taxi. The flight provided stunning views of the Able Tasman Park bays and Awaroa before landing on the airstrip 5 minutes’ walk from the lodge. We dropped our bags at the end of the airstrip and walked up a path through the bush with signs pointing to the lodge, greeted by Tui’s (NZ songbirds) singing in the trees. While we checked in a porter picked up our bags and dropped them to our unit.

We stayed in one of the superior suites which have balcony’s overlooking the wetland area. It was modern, spacious and clean. In the evenings we enjoyed sitting out on the balcony and reading while watching native birds wandering about.

The food was all delicious and way exceeded our expectations. We also felt it was very reasonably priced consider the quality and the costs associated with the remoteness of the place. Evenings in late March when we were there can be cool so the staff had the fire lit in the dining room which made our dinners cosy and atmospheric.

The staff were all very friendly and attentive. They arranged a kayaking trip for us on one day through a local operator, and the water transport out of the park. The chef made packed for us lunches which we took on a hike around Awaroa inlet. They consisted of gourmet wraps made with our individual choice of ingredients, fresh fruit and cheesecake from the cake selection in the restaurant. They were so good we took more with us on the day we departed.

We left by water taxi so that we could hike part of the Southern end of the Park, from Bark Bay to Anchorage (in our opinion the most beautiful part of the track). The porter dropped our bags off on the beach so that we didn’t have to carry them down the sandy track. Our only disappointment was that we couldn’t stay longer!

I rate this hotel highly for its excellent service. The team there are ever so accommodating.

The food & wine list was amazing. Specially after a long day tramping through the national park.

The room we were given was spacious, clean & comfortable.

I would definitely go back & stay here again.

The Awaroa Lodge is located in Abel Tasman National Park. You can't just drive there, you have to get there via water shuttle. The proprietors will assist you in reservations. We can't say enough fantastic things about this lodge. The service is outstanding, they serve creative and yummy natural and organic food in the restaurant, they have free WiFi (out in the middle of a national park), and the rooms are beautiful little mini-chalets with direct access out to the hiking trails. We only spent one night here -- the biggest regret of our entire trip. It was beautiful and peaceful and the kind of place you want to hang out for a week.

We just wanted to take our adult daughter on a short vacation of activity and luxury all in the same place. And the Awaroa Lodge was both. The location in this National Park was perfect. You can choose how far you would like to hike in or just sea shuttle into the resort directly. We arrived at the Kaiteriteri Parking Lot and all the prearranged transportation was perfectly set up by the Staff at the Awaroa Lodge. From beginning to end, our 2 night stay was fabulous. The food and Staff were the best. As well as the accommodations. We had reserved two luxury cabins and were delighted with the rooms and views. You really feel your out in the wilderness, yet living in a very comfortable room. Bed and amenities were up to Pepper's high standards.

Room Tip: It is better to get the Luxury accommodations if your budget allows it. Corner unit is the best bec...

Awaroa Lodge is a delightful little peaceful oasis and a perfect base for trekking Abel Tasman in comfort. I couldn't fault it - the rooms were spacious clean and modern with lovely balconies overlooking the bush. Service was exceptional - very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious - though maybe a tiny bit overpriced. Though considering the remoteness and the efforts they make to ensure minimal visual and environmental impact to the area this is understansable. The main building had a number of great little spots both inside and out to relax over a glass of wine of beer. Getting there is easy - aboard one of the many daily ferries. And it is easy to do different parts of the track and get ferried back to the Lodge at the end of each day. Highly recommended! (And in regards dying insects on teh floor in the restaurant - yes there were a few - but you're in the middle of the bush and insects fly about and into the building. I don't think this is at all a reflection of the cleanliness of the Lodge).
