this distinctive, quirky hotel is just for you. Off the beaten track - in a hamlet of 20 people in a secluded river valley; Rooms that don't have numbers - they are all called after the wide variety of colours found in the area during the course of the year (some based on the colours of the houses located in the various river valleys found in Cantabria); Original wooden beams (watch out if you're above average height!!); A surprise round every corner and on every staircase (sorry! - no lifts in this 17th century country house, which in its time has served as a staging post for horse drawn transport). Add to all that a restaurant which basically serves fresh produce from the local farms and ports ( at the closest point, the sea is 20 km away) excellently prepared and accompanied by first class wines, both local and from other parts of Spain - after dinner, ask the Maitre for his 'orujo' recommendation (but be careful!!!!! - this 'digestif' carries a punch!!!!!!). The staff are extremely helpful, courteous and knowledgeable about the area and can recommend activities such as walking trails, cycle tours (bike hire available two villages away), sights to see (caves, snow-bearing mountains with ski stations, historical buildings and beauty spots), as well as places to buy the local produce for which the area is renowned (three villages down the road there is a World Champion hand-made cheese producer). A car is necessary but the fact that the hotel is located in such a quiet area more than compensates for that modern necessity. This description began with the word "quirky". The most amazing thing about the hotel is the decoration - it defies belief! The unimaginable combinations (a bust of Tintin and Milou located below an Egyptian pharoah's mask, for example) created throughout the hotel but in a way that never ceases to amaze are virtually undescribable. For that reason, the best way to experience it is to stay there!!!

I have stayed at Camino Real at least 5 times over the last 8 years. It is a beautiful hotel with an excellent restaurant attached. All the rooms are large and individually decorated. Some are in separate buildings but the whole "complex" is just magical, and set in a beautiful valley less than an hour from Santander. There's no busy bar, or other facilities, this is just a place to chill.

My husband, three of my children (ages 16, 14, 11) and I stayed at El Camino Real de Selores for 4 nights while we visited Cantabria area. The building was 300 years old with remodeled rooms each with its own color. We stayed in los blancos and los amarillo rooms on the top floor. The rooms were large and the bathrooms adequate. The buffet breakfast was more than one would expect in a European country. The restaurant was very nice, but there were also nearby restaurants that were equally nice. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is not centrally located in that it is not in a main town, but it is conveniently located to tour the Cantabria area. We would recommend El camino real de Selores to anyone who is considering visiting the Cantabria area.
