“Great Hotel with a (personal) major problem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2010

I stayed to Ducale Hotel four nights, traveling for leisure and sightseeing to Venice with my wife. The location is PERFECT just 15 minutes by bus from airport (bus stop just 100 meters from the hotel entrance) and 20-30 minutes by bus from Venice. Although is located on a very busy street, during night everything is calm and quiet. Area is very quiet and we didn't see any danger during our late night returns.

The room was quite small but comfortable and well equipped for the type of the hotel. Staff very friendly, helpful and polite. Towels changed every day and the hotel is very clean and tidy. Breakfast was quite good continental.

And now MY PERSONAL MAJOR PROBLEM. The size of the shower basin and the surrounding glass was TOO SMALL for my size.I am a quite big man (1.96m, 110 kg), heavy build and muscular. The entrance in shower cabin is 1.90m in height and about 40 cm wide, so I couldn't get inside in order to have a shower. I ask for another room with more space in the shower and the only available was a room with bathtub and they ask me to pay 20 Euro supplement per day for that. I denied and I feel a little pissed off about that.I managed to have shower by taking out one of the surrounding glasses (I don't know if can be fixed again but i don't care because I needed to take a shower during my stay).

So my recommendation to the management is to do something about that ASAP, so normal (hehehehehe) sized persons like me can use it.

Of course I recommend this hotel to anyone that is not more than 1.80 in height or more than 100 kilos in weight.

I needed a room for one night prior to our cruise out of Venice. After a long flight from Seattle I wanted a clean budget hotel close to the airport; Hotel Ducale seemed to fit the bill. We were pleasantly surprised with our room. It was compact but certainly not claustrophobic, had a TV, hairdryer and full bathroom. A great breakfast was included; cereals, juices, pastries, bagels, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt. We also enjoyed walking thru the little town; watched old and young pedal their bikes on errands, carrying groceries on handlebar baskets. We especially enjoyed the little old ladies who pedalled in their skirts and stopped to visit with each other on the sidewalk. It was quite sweet.
It was only 10 minutes from the airport and probably just as far to Venice. We really enjoyed our stay. It was a nice entry into Venice. Staff were helpful. Room was very clean. Great value. Would definitely stay there again.

Trip Report: Hotel Ducale in Maestre (Venice)

Hotel:
Very Clean and nicely decorated. Breakfast was European and buffet style. Plentiful and good. Breakfast included coffee, Tea, Hot Choc, juices, etc. Front desk was manned at all hours and there is a small bar for coffee and drinks. The Lounge was large with a flat screen TV and enough room. There is a computer just off the lounge if you need access to e-mail, etc. Wifi in the lobby/lounge area is fast. (i'll get some pictures loaded)
Location: On the Via Triestina between the airport and Maestra. The trip from the airport is about 10 minutes on the bus. Take the bus #15 from the airport. Show the bus driver the address, he'll make sure you get off at the correct stop. The bus stop is 100 feet from the hotel front door. From this bus stop you can also take the #4 bus to and from Venice in about 20 minutes. Buses run less frquently on Sundays/Holidays. The front desk knows the schedule.
In the hotel it was a mixed crowd from all over the World. Families with children, retired couples, young couples, even a couple of groups
Outside the hotel 200' yard to the left is a reccomended restaurant. In the other direction (past the bus stop) there are many as you walk. Just outside the hotel and around the corner is a bar and a take away pizza place. There is a laundry (pay machines) next to the take away. Pharmacy, newstand, other shops line the street.
I walked around at night and never felt at danger. There were women, children on the streets coming and going quite late.
The hotel doesn't have meals other than breakfast. There are two shops across the street. A small gorcery store/deli & another selling cigarettes and gifts.

The Room:
Pretty small but in line with B&B's i've stayed at in other parts of Europe. The room was functional (what little time i was there) Double bed, desk, wardrobe, small TV (I never turned it on) Phone. Bed was firm. The bathroom has a small shower but great water pressure. (Personally, i'd trade the bidet for more shower space. But, that's just me) Linen changed & room cleaned daily. My room had a balcony. All rooms seem to have a window that opens. I didn't need A/C, so i cannot comment.
WiFi in the room didn't work, the signal wasn't strong enough. (Room 120)
I used my laptop in the lounge. As i wasn't there much at all, this wasn't a big deal.
The room was very clean.
No need to dicuss rates. The price was very good, but i'm sure rates change throughout the year.
. Money:
i took some Euro's with me, and got money from cash machines in Venice as needed. The exchange rate seems to be better from the cash machines. Maestro card worked fine.
Getting around:
At the airport, go to the tourist desk and ask for the "ACTV"travel card. You can buy for 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, etc. They will give you directions to the buses, water buses, etc. The card allows unlimited travel on public transportation throughout the area. In Venice, you can use the Water Bus with this. The Water taxis and Gondolas are not covered and are expensive. Taxis (Cars, vans) are very expensive. The bus and water bus are fast enough and nothing is very far anyway. (I'm sure you are aware, there are no vehicles in venice)
At the bus plaza in Venice the #1 & #2 go up the Grand Canal to San Marco square. There are many stops along the way.
At S. Marco square, there are water buses to the other islands. Schedules are posted. All covered by the ACTV card.
Take a cheap tour up and down the Grand Canal. Be one of the first in line to board the water bus and get a seat outside in the front or back of the water bus. At S. Marco square, change sides and see the other side of the Grand Canal.
NOTICE: The water bus can get really, really crowded.
Tips: don't buy a map of Venice, it wont help. big yellow signs with arrows show the way to the major sights, or just ask someone. It's not that big a town, and you should get lost and explore. It's all safe and very interesting.
There are no free toilets, and there aren't many public toilets. Toilets cost 1.50 euro (The few i saw) Alternately, it's a good excuse to stop at a cafe and have a drink. Ask if they have a toilet first.
If you get a chance, splurge for lunch at the "Metropole" Hotel, just down a little from S. Marco square....unbelievable.

If i missed anything, feel free to mail me

Pictures were too big to upload. I'll save them down and try again

I booked this hotel thru their website for a rate of 57 euro, double, nonrefundable, no breakfast (but night desk attendant gave us food as we left). We had a 7:45 am flight and were too early for the shuttle service. We could have easily taken the public bus to the airport, but we did not want to risk it. As others have said, the hotel arranges a "taxi" for this situation (seems to be a friend of the hotel and not a bonafide taxi). We paid 20 euro; could have found our own less expensive taxi, but like the bus, who wants to make a mistake at 5:30 am before a long day of travel. Ditto what others have said about the restaurant nearby.

Good value and reasonable hotel for an early departure from Venice.

I spent 2 nights at the hotel and I found it to be clean and tidy. The room and shower unit are small as previously stated in other reviews but at the end of the day you get what you pay for. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite. To get to the hotel from Marco Polo airport I woudl recommend you take the number 15 bus. Before you leave the airport, there is an information desk where you can obtain your bus ticket from. Just tell them how many journeys you intend to take by bus and they will charge you accordingly. The price of a ticket as at Feb 2010 was approximately 1.10 euros per journey. Once out of the airport go to the bus terminals over the road and wait for a number 15. Once on the bus swipe you bus ticket on the machinie. The bus jouney from the airport to the hotel should take approximately 7 minutes. If you sit on the right hand side of the bus you cannot miss it as it is a bright "pinklish" buiding wiht the name of the hotel clearly displayed. Once off the bus the hotel is a short 3 minute walk. Like everyone has stated I would also recommend you get the number 19 bus to get you to the main part of Venice. The bus stop for the 19 bus is just around the corner - again no more then a 2 or 3 minute walk from the hotel. Once you reach the main part of Venice you will have various options as to what to do next. You can take the Riverbus to other parts of Venice i.e. San Marco. Please note that the hotel staff will print off the various bus timetables for you if you ask and will provide you with any other information that you may have. I cannnot comment on the breakfast provided as I didn't try it.

Overall, if you are planning a short stay in Venice then i woudl recommend this hotel.

We had a short overnight layover in Venice and chose this hotel because it is close to the airport. But because our arrival was late at night and our departure the following morning was early, we had to take taxis both ways. For the short 6 km distance it cost us 25 euro each way. Add that into the cheap hotel rate!!! And then to add insult to injury, the hotel double charged us (which we didn't find out until we got home) and after several communications both by phone and e-mail, they refused to credit one of the charges. So that short 6-hour stay cost us over $240!!!

Dear Sir, Madam

We understand your disappointed, but as already explained in our email, you made 2 reservations for the same date, each reservation for 1 doubleroom. You have payed direct here 1 room and, later, we have charged 1 doubleroom as No Show (we didn't know it was the same reservation, we have many bookings..). Anyway, as you can see in our email sent on Nov. 30, 2009, we have offered to keep the Euro 60.00 payed as no show as a voucher for your next visit, but you never reply...!!!. This is our best help we can do, the mistake was made from your tour operator that made a double reservation.... the same tour operator we pay the commission for this reservation.

Kind Regards

We needed to stay at a hotel near the airport for an early flight. Found this not only convenient to airport, but also 2 bus lines to Venice stop within steps of Ducale.
Front desk staff helpful and pleasant. Room is adequate, bathroom well equipped.
Very clean. They do have an airport shuttle which starts at 9 AM, but we left at 5AM so we took a taxi which they arranged.
