“Okay, but not without its issues”
Reviewed 8 January 2013

We stayed for 6 nights at Kunnola Beach House over the Christmas 2012 period. I’ll start with the good things.

- The location is remarkable. Nestled in a coconut palm grove in amongst an Indian village it gave a real flavour of authentic Indian life
- The beach is stupendous, especially Kizhunna beach which is a few hundred meters up from Kunnola Beach House

Unfortunately there were more things that we weren’t too impressed with.

- Our room was small, dark and dingy. The photo’s on the website for the ground floor room we stayed in was not representative of the room we stayed in. This was exacerbated by the fact that room wasn’t cleaned, or sheets or towels changed during our 6 day stay, which was disappointing.
- The website showed pictures of hammocks strung between coconut palms. Unfortunately these hammocks were no-where to be seen.
- There’s a bit of a problem with rubbish in the area. A little bit of effort to clean up the worst of this would make the surrounding area much nicer and add to the enjoyment of the stay.
- The food was bland and a bit disappointing, especially after hearing so much about how good Keralan cuisine was. There were a lot of family’s staying with young children and I can’t help but think that the food was generally toned down to for both a child’s and a Westerners palate. It would have been nice to have at least one dish served with each meal that was a bit spicier!
- There is no communal area to sit and have conversations with other guests after dinner. We felt guilty staying up beyond 9pm in the dining area as the people who run the homestay started to turn off the lights and lock doors.
- There was never enough beer available to supply all guests with a couple of drinks at dinner time. On more than one occasion the beers ran out early in the evening before dinner started.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay as the glorious beach mitigated most of the negatives for us, but the issues that we’ve highlighted were enough to take the edge off our visit and rate our stay as average.

It was the first visit to India for myself and our 4year old. My husband had not been to Kerala before either. We booked into Kunnola Beach house for 4 nights and extended our stay as it was so good. The food was excellent and plentiful with breakfast, lunch and dinner being served every day. The beers were cold and tea and coffee was on tap. The house is in a village and surrounded by local houses with delightful children who played with our son and mde the experience very local and very colourful. The staff were extremely helpful and got us up for the early morning Theyyam fesival and helped get transport to and from the house. It is near to the safest place on the beach to swim and if I had to say anything negative, it would just be that they need to clean the rooms more often.
We did try another place in the area, and checked out others but decided non of them had what we could get at Kunnola which was a chilled out beach side holiday, comfortable accommodation with great food and the company of other travellers.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main house with a fan and bathroom, also had mosquito nets.

An arranged taxi collected us from the railway station. Great to have this arranged. The beach houses are set amongst coconut trees just 50-100metres from a really lovely long empty beach with clean seas (mussel divers each morning and dolphins spotted on 2 occasions). There are Indian family homes around the houses and the children are lovely, happy and polite. They might smile and ask for a pen or a chocolate when you first arrive, but then just smile and wave after you have been there a day. It is a priviledge to live in a proper community and I imagine that this will change as the area is getting a new airport in a year or 4. There are local shops a few minutes walk away and a local bus to the town and ATM (10 rupees). The rooms are large and well maintained with mosquito nets and large bathrooms. They are not homestays but affiliated to a very popular one. We ate at a communal enclosed outdoor eating area (a torch is useful after the evening meal). We just loved our time here. The ladies that cook are delightful and Sheenah in particular is happy and smiling with a smattering of English. Paulos the caretaker has a little more and you can always contact Nazir or Rosie at the main homestay who have excellent English. The beaches are a dream of cleanliness and emptiness - JUST LOVED IT. You can walk to smaller coves up to the North. Had a very happy time here.

Room Tip: If you want the HOMESTAY experience you will need to book up Kunnola Beach House, which is VERY popu...

Stayed for 5 nights, room was clean and comfortable with a good mosquito net. Food was excellent, served at fixed times and eaten at a communal long table with a constantly changing stream of fellow guests from all around the world. The beach is a few minutes walk through the coconut groves, but one needs to be modestly dressed walking through what is a conservative village. The beach was practically deserted apart from the regular evening football practice just before sundown - there is not a lot to do apart from relax but Paulos will arrange visits including night time Theyyam, and don't miss the local handloom weavers.

After dealing with an overbooked flight and a harrowing (7 hour) taxi drive, we arrived at Kunnola beach house at about midnight. Paulos was waiting up for us, and had set aside a wonderful Kerelan dinner. The rooms were rustic and comfortable and well within earshot of the sound of the waves. We stayed in the main house, located in a forest of palms near the homes of local fishermen. The meals were inclusive, traditional, punctual and served on a long communal table.
The following four days we spent ther were far too short, as the place quickly proved addictive. The beach was as great as I have found anywhere. Dolphins, Mongooses, Brahminy Kites, Bee-eaters, and and Paddybirds were regular sightings every day. There were plenty of ways to spend the hours of the day. We visited a late-night Theyyam and a fabrics co-op, but mostly swam in the ocean and sat on the beach... and ate... and socialized a steady rotation of fellow travelers. The beach had a remote feel, though a walk will prove that many other resorts are on the way. Internet was available, though we didnt really use it much. A warm thanks goes to Paulos the rest of the staff. We look forward to visiting again.

The rooms were very good, the bed was comfy and clean.
The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious.
There was a mosquito net.
The location though wasn't the best, I say this partly because we stayed at the sister property (Kannur Beach House) first which set in lovely gardens. Kunnola Beach House is set back from the beach in a tiny village so it doesn't have great views which is a little problem when it is too hot for the beach.
To be fair I think that the owners will probably develop the gardens over time as I think the property is new.
