Finding a restaurant table for one in a very busy Saint Valery at 13:00 on the Saturday of the tri-annual steam festival is not easy. However, Le Nichol's made me very welcome and squeezed me in upstairs. Had oysters followed by a filet steak. Food quality and preparation were excellent and service was surprisingly good given a heaving restaurant full of French families (always a good sign). Really enjoyed it.

Our first night in St Valery was a Sunday & there wasn't a lot open in the evening but fortunately Le Nicol;s was. Restaurant was very busy.
I had the fish terrine to start - very good - then we both had moules mariniere & frites - excellent value had €12.50 each & very tasty. We had moules several times on our trip and the moules themselves tend to be much smaller than those you get elsewhere, eg in Belgium. Just that they harvest them at an earlier stage I suppose. With a bottle of Chardonnay & a coffee, bill came to €50 which I thought was good value.
After much swithering & looking at other places, we returned to Le Nicol's the following night. I asked if the could do the paella without meat, only fish/seafood, & this they were only too happy to do. We both had it & it was very good. Again the bill came to €50, this time including two menus at €16.90 - very good value.
Definitely recommended.

Friendly welcome on a pouring wet All Saints' Night. We mistakenly ordered a red pitcher instead of rosé and he changed it without the slightest trace of the usual sneer we'd expect from a French waiter. Lovely food and great service. Just what was needed.

We had 2 evening meals there on 2 consecutive days and enjoyed the food which was well prepared, varied and delicious. Good selection of dishes and chef helpful for people who were vegetarians.
