Having limited choice due to a number of restaurants being closed on a wet Monday afternoon initially seemed a good choice but sorry to report very average may be we have been lucky and eaten at many very good restaurants in France unfortunately this was not one of them

Lots of restaurants in this delightful town which is well worth a visit. Noticed this one busier than most and full of locals, always a good sign. I ordered a seafood platter and she ordered a plate of prawns. They put them all in one big platter which could be off putting to some especially as it was all so good she helped herself to a lot of my order. Lovely desserts well presented and very nice staff. Great atmosphere.

We have visited Le Nicol's quite a few times over the years as we have friends with a house in St Valery. It always used to be a very good restaurant with a typically French atmosphere, good food & service. Last week we went for the first time in several years to find it had totally changed. Now with rather 'restaurant chain' looking brasserie decor & over-bright lighting for an evening meal. It's totally lost its character. The waitress who served us was very helpful and friendly. We had a menu at 26 euros. The starter of a bowl each of seafood was fine. However, when our main courses of hake were presented, we could both see that it was totally overcooked & falling apart. (My husband has worked in food & beverage management roles in the hotel industry for 35 years. ) We tasted it, which confirmed our fears and called our waitress. She called another woman who we assume was the manager who was quite surly and reluctantly agreed to give us a replacement main course. We chose the salmon which included the same garnish/accompaniments (in fact two French women at the next table understood what we were saying and commented that most dishes seemed to come with the same garnish). This, too was not particularly good & nobody came to ask us if it was ok. We both left some of it and our plates were cleared by a male waiter who had not been involved with our complaint. Our desserts were ok, though the house special apple one wasn't really that special. We were rather fed up by this time & asked for the bill. No gesture had been made for our bad experience so we asked for the manager again, who called the chef. He was even more surly and after much argument I said to my husband'let's just pay & go', which we did. A totally spoiled evening.

We were rushed through our meal even though it was not late. Fish dishes were good. My partner and I both had the set menus which were good value and well presented. Sadly, the courses were served one after another with no time in between. Not sure why as the restaurant was not packed out so it's not as if they needed the tables. Perhaps the chef wanted to finish early!! The highlight was the lovely aperitif they serve which is sparkling Saumur with Chestnut Liqueur. Fabulous!

We had a very good dinner at Le Nichol's - a very nice restaurant in beautiful St Valery. We shared an enormous seafood platter - L'Opale - more than enough for the two of us and filled with crab, langoustines, prawns, shrimps and other crustaceans. We followed up with a shared plate of a French-style paella which we really didn't need but enjoyed nonetheless!

Not too expensive and delicious!
