“Charming and Enchanting”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

An enchanting hotel in an endearing town. The Hotel Picardia was near faultless.
Nearly all the staff were lovely (there's always one exception!!)......
The room's furnishings, the reception room's roaring log fire, and a hugely decadent breakfast, were all oh-so-delightfully French.
A word of warning however: the town pretty much shuts down after 9pm. We experienced a lot of "Ferme!" trying to get a snack and a drink at around that time. Le Bisteot de St Val was our saviour at that point, our waitress was particularly lovely (and tolerant of our terrible French), and the 'fromage' and 'vin' were both delicious and in abundance.

Room Tip: Room 20 had two twin beds pushed together, rather than a double bed.

This hotel is very nice and very clean and it is in a very good location, only a short walk to the harbour. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes. The room was a good size and the furniture was good with an antique feel but nice and clean, everything matched. We did,nt have the breakfast because we felt it was to expensive at 15 Euros per person. I think we would stay here again in the future.

We arrived at 8.15 in the evening, very tired and had not pre booked. We were told that the only room they had left was a family room for four at 145 euros, we were so tired we said we would take it but wanted a reduction as there were only two of us. The unsmiling receptionist reduced the price by only 10, and a double room was advertised at only 88 euros. Breakfast an extra 13 euros. My husband is fed by a machine overnight and so we told the this and that only I would be eating. I took my husband a cup of tea from the self service set up as he was sitting outside the dining area. When we checked out I was shocked to discover that we had been charged another 4 euros for one cup of tea!. Room was pleasant and clean but we found the staff not friendly and the price expensive for what it was.

Room Tip: Back of hotel is quiet and overlooks a small courtyard which is pleasant, but al;so the very small c...

We had 3 days in late August - a good clean hotel with an adequate buffet breakfast. Although called an hotel it is in fact a B&B establishment with a small sitting area. OK for 3/4 days but perhaps not the place for a week or more. The paid hotel parking was full however the carpal opposite was slightly cheaper!

We stayed here for a long weekend and had a lovely relaxing time. Staff were helpful and friendly, rooms were quite basic, but clean and our bed was very comfortable. We had rooms at the back of the hotel and found it to be nice and quiet. As mentioned previously, breakfast is expensive, but the quality of food and the beautiful dining room made it worthwhile.

Room Tip: South facing rooms at the back are quiet.

My wife and I stayed here in June 2012 on a motoring holiday. The room was booked through a website and cost 98 euros for one night. Breakfast was an additional 13 euros each and overnight car parking was 10 euros.
The room was fine. It was basic but clean and the bathroom did all it needed to do. breakfast was typical choice of cereals, breads etc with do it yourself boiled eggs. At 13 euros each I felt it a bit expensive compared to other hotels of the same standard. I felt that charging a resident 10 euros for parking was also very pricey...
Would we stay again? maybe, but I would also look at others in the town first.

This is a beautiful, calm, understated part of France and St Valery is perfect (just one hour from the Channel Tunnel) for a weekend break from the UK. Hotel Picardia is situated just back from the seafront promenade - a very pleasant 10 minutes' walk from the centre of the town, and from the brilliant Sunday morning market where you can stuff your bags with the fresh produce that never seems to make it across to UK supermarkets. There is a wealth of restaurants nestling in the main street where you can dine well on locally-caught shellfish and regional specialities, and Amiens with its incredible cathedral is less than an hour away.

The hotel decor is crisp and clean, the rooms generously large but a little spartan, and there is an amply sized lounge/bar on the ground floor, if you're in the mood to linger over a late cognac. However, the staff were in the main so unfriendly that a nightcap felt like it would be a less than convivial experience, so we gave it a miss.

To be fair, one of the men who was on the desk in the evenings was pleasant, but the female staff all came across as incredibly austere. I shall never understand why anyone who basically doesn't like people very much, or doesn't appear to, should end up working in the hospitality industry, but then maybe it wasn't their first choice of job. The young woman who was serving breakfast (which was in itself fine) looked positively suspicious, as though she expected us to steal the butter knives (we're a fortysomething couple, not particularly outrageous looking either!). Maybe she'd had some bad experiences...

All of that said, we'd probably stay there again as the beds were comfortable, the rooms were quiet and the location was great. Just a little staff training would help. The customers are not your enemies, ladies!
