“St Valery on high”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

This boutique hotel has a unique and amazing situation on the top of St Valery with great views over the Somme estuary. The chef prepares fresh and different dishes. The rooms are modern and reflect the surrounding countryside colours. The staff while helpful were a trifle cool and the lack of translated menus suggested that perhaps foreign visitors are not that welcome!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

Hotel is nicely situated above the town on the headland with stunning views of the estuary. The parking is tricky in St Valery so handy that the hotel has a good size carpark.

Positives
Our room was enormous. It was in the main building on the ground floor and easily took in an extra bed for our daughter. It overlooked the carpark/terrace without a view (but we didn't pay for a room with a view so as expected. Separate toilet and bathroom. Short walk to the town. Swimming pool is small but fine for playing in.

Negatives
Not very child friendly. We paid a ridiculous 30 euros/night for the extra bed (a camp bed). We ate in the hotel restaurant on the 2nd night (food was recommended and it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale outside) - a child menu was offered but wasn't suitable for a 4 year. They wouldn't cook pasta or offer a small portion - we eventually settled on a small risotto only to be given an adult portion of the vegetarian main (with tofu and coriander) which like any 4 year old she refused to eat - we found out next day it was 18 euros - no negotiation. Breakfast was also 15 euros for a child - no concessions. There is a bakery down the road but not open every day.

The service at the meal was ridiculous - there was one waiter manning the dining room and the reception. We couldn't see our bill before leaving the restaurant and I was really annoyed to be charged so much money for a child's meal.

Left feeling a bit underwhelmed.

We stayed here for 1 night on our way to Normandy. The area is absolutely stunning as the Baie de la Somme is one big estuary and marshland. We chose a 'fantastic' room, located some way behind the main hotel in the Spa building. The view from the room was spectacular and although it was raining when we arrived we were able to appreciate the location looking across the bay. Sunrise was amazing! Breakfast was okay, but lacked the attention of personal service as the waitress was never around to see guests in personally. In fact, guests were just left to fumble around looking for plates, spoons, milk, hot food, etc! Not good enough for a 4 star hotel. Would we stay here again? Probably not. It is very expensive. St Valery, however, is a little gem with good restaurants and pretty buildings.

We stayed one night in les corderies after recommandation from some friends. It was a good tip, but maybe not for families with kids.
The advantages of the hotel:
-clean rooms (ask for a room in the new part)
-nice small pool (nice picture on the site but is much smaller in real)
-good restaurant, nice breakfast
-friendly staff
-free wifi
Some disappointments (small):
-the view of the rooms is the somme and the garden/roofs of the neighbours (not so clean as the hotel)
-the pool was very loud due to the low ceiling
-the bar was very small
-maybe not the best choice for family with kids
I hope this was helpfull.

Room Tip: choose the new rooms

Rooms are clean and modern, the ones in the new building have a lovely view over the town and marshes...could be improved on details for instance by providing more hooks for hanging clothes - as for the contraption inside the entrance cupboard, it is impractical for you have to pull down a steel bar which is well above your head and with some force pull on a lever to get at some hangers to hang your clothes ! What a palaver!! The lighting system can be confusing too...too many switches on and off etc...
The shower room was good and roomy, the bed was large and comfortable. Breakfast was not cheap but alright - not exceptional - it is served in a downstairs room which is rather small and enclosed - it would have been better situated on the side of the hotel for a more airy atmosphere. It seems that aesthetic in this place has taken presidence over functionality.
The people at reception were obliging and pleasant. The parking is secure and we enjoyed a drink in the garden. You can walk to the village in a few minutes. Did not have time to use indoor pool so cannot comment.
Our main criticism is the price : 250 euros per room (single or double) excluding breakfast is too dear for the area and what is on offer...

Room Tip: All rooms are fine particularly in the new block where they have a nice view.

I thought this place was great. Don't go expecting top top snooty service. Its relaxed but friendly. Breakfast was circa 15 - 19 euro, we walked into the town instead. As usual however, this is a French Village so the timing for meals has to be correct. You will not get lunch after 2pm anywhere and you will need to always book anywhere for dinner (well we had to).

They were great with our 6 year old, but this hotel is not for noisy kid, my other two older teenage boys would have been bored here... there is the beach over a Le Croty, this is quite a nice area to go for the day and not too far.

The Spa is really good and the best views, I have been to some good ones too in Monaco Elat and Barbados etc. Had a neat little jacuzzi bath that really bubbled up with views over the somme only 30 euros.
The rooms are nice, big chairs, comfy bed, bathroom OK
Did not have dinner, stayed for three nights, and we did enjoy it.
