“worst night's sleep in a hotel”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

Hotel is in a lovely position overlooking he bay and has been recently redecorated in 'retro' style. Welcomed by friendly staff. No problem with parking as we had one small bag and had been to St Val before so knew where the free parking was. However- that is where the good stuff stops - I specifically asked for a quiet room when booking but we were both kept awake virtually all night by the water pipes running done the wall in our room. Gurgling an gushing all night drove us absolutely mad!! Also cars driving over cobbles just outside the un double glazed window was a nightmare ( if I'd been asleep that is) I could have cried with tiredness as we had driven for 4 hrs and were looking forward to a good night's sleep. We decided to just get out in the morning and didn't bother having breakfast. I complained to the young girl on the desk who stared at me blankly and just handed me the bill!!! I asked if she understood and she said yes but no more reaction than that. We had just come form a great hotel in St Malo which cost half the price. I certainly wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone unless they put some serious money into sound proofing and sort out the plumbing. If I'd had more energy and a manage had been around I would have asked for some money back!!!

Room Tip: Can't think of one as I asked for quiet room to no avail

Very limited options in this part of France, but we had to find some place to stay and Les Pilotes was it. Had a view of the bay from the room but the décor was not conducive to France or for being along the water. It was dark and odd. The clerk had to show us six rooms before we settled on one, I asked what the rate was without breakfast, and he said there was no option, we had to take breakfast. Well, we had their puny breakfast and on the "menu" it showed 12 Euros for breakfast..so that was dishonest and those 24 euros could have been deducted from the cost of the overpriced room. Another note, if you have a car, the free parking is very inconvenient and far from the hotel.

A very well decorated and clean hotel in a good position. However the room we had was very cramped with no table or chairs, a narrow gap between the bed and the walls and no tea or coffee making facility. The clear glass panel between the room and the ensuite may not be to everyones liking. We felt the breakfast was a rather "portion control" affair with no cheese or ham.
At 113 euros a night on average for a 3 night stay this was a poor value stay. Note that rates are not displayed outside and Saturday nights are a lot more.

We just spent two nights at Les Pilotes in beautiful St Valery sur Somme. We found the hotel by pure chance and how lucky we were. The rooms are beautifully and creatively decorated with a superb view of the Bay and the estuary. Everything has been thought out with great care, down to the wool blanket on the bed and the gorgeous brass lamps. We love the window in the bathroom allowing light and view - and what a beautiful and calming view. The room and bathroom are spotlessly clean. The bed is large with a very comfortable mattress. The strolling-walking-running path is right at the foot of the hotel. My husband went for a long run, I sat at the brasserie next door and had a beer instead.
The breakfast selection is amazing with freshly baked 'viennoiseries", homemade jam, butter so good spread it one inch thick on the bread, fresh cheese made by a small artisan in the area, slices of the local cake, juice (which i didn't have since i didn't want to get full on fruits while there was so much good baking to enjoy) and very good cafe 'a volonte'. The lady serving us was extremely pleasant -even though we always got to the beautiful breakfast room at 7:30 sharp (no reason except that as soon as we woke up we started thinking of the croissants, pain au chocolat, etc..). The breakfast basket could be a lot smaller and the selection would still be sufficient to fill one's appetite. However we ate everything each morning even when we knew we were over indulging.

We ate at the restaurant of the hotel both nights. The chef knows what he is doing, every dish we ate was excellent. Everything is sourced locally -something we really like and want to support The menu is small and changes daily based on what the fishermen bring this day or what meat the butcher recommends. We enjoyed the service very much, it is very professional but not at all stuffy, very friendly but not over friendly as seems the trend in North America.
Prices for the rooms are reasonable and we found the restaurant extremely well priced for meals of this quality. However we live in Calgary where the prices in good restaurants are very high so our expectations for fair prices might be off. We compared with equivalent restaurants in Calgary serving food of this quality and there we would have spent more than double -not including the wine, pre-dinner drinks, and after-dinner drinks.
The service at all level is perfect.
There is free parking in the higher part of the city; it seems a long way to drive to it but it's only a few minutes to walk back to the hotel down a lovely walk down small lanes and old houses.

If you like shopping for beautiful scarves and unique pieces of jewelry there is a lovely store next to the hotel. We did all our gift shopping there pleased to know that no gift we brought back could be found somewhere else.

Room Tip: Well worth getting a room with view to the Bay. 2nd floor is even better as the view is endless.

As others have said, Les Pilotes reopened towards the end of 2012 under new ownership & after a refurbishment. The decor is somewhat quirky but it's fun - first time we've seen a carpet pretending to be floorboards! As has already been noted, the quirkiness extends to a full-length clear glass window between the bedroom & bathroom, which means the party still lying in bed can observe the other party in the shower, and even on the toilet. Not quite sure why this was thought to be a good idea but it did raise a laugh.
Staff are very friendly & helpful, including the couple who I took to be the owners.
We paid €288 as a late booking for 3 nights, for a top floor room overlooking the bay - smashing view. The rack rate was supposed to be €210 per night which would be very expensive for the room but we were very happy with the deal we got. Breakfast was extra at €9 for the continental - good selection of breads, pastries, jams, yoghurt etc. We would normally go out for just a croissant & coffee but St Valery didn't seem to have anything to offer at that time in the morning. But as I said, the hotel's breakfast was very good. They go out of their way to serve local produce & indeed the hotel makes much of its eco credentials.
Tea & coffee facilities in the room, quite unusual for a French hotel. Good free wifi. TV doesn't have any English-language channels apart from one European channel.
Once we arrived we were given instructions on how to find the free car park - by road it's quite a long way round but only about 10 mins walk back to the hotel. This free car park is not very much signposted in the town itself!
Definitely a hotel to recommend.

Recently opened, this hotel must become the place of choice to stay in delightful St Valery. The decor in the bar and reception areas uses unusual wallpaper and quirky design touches. The hotel featured in the spring edition of Coté Ouest, the French design magazine. Our bedroom had a minimalist touch with grey walls that helped reflect the wonderful luminosity of the Somme estuary. There was a walk in shower with a window through to the bed area, so showering meant a sea view too. The bed, with beautiful white linen and fabulous pillows looked directly out to the water. There is a refreshment tray in the bedroom.Breakfast taken in the bar consisted of local produce- delicious yogurts, a basket of venoisserie from a local boulangerie. Not cheap but worth it.

Room Tip: It's worth paying more for a view of the bay. Ask for a bed that looks out directly.

A stylish recently refurbished hotel with very pleasant and helpful staff / owners. The bedroom was not large but had everything we needed including a comfortable bed, lovely linen, and tea / coffee making facilities. The shower area was "open-plan" which was unusual but didn't trouble us. The view from our second floor bedroom over the bay was superb. Breakfast times were flexible (up to noon?) and the food was delicious - locally made fresh produce which was brought to the table (not a buffet). Breakfast was served in the bar area again with superb views over the bay. This was a February half-term break and St Valery was pretty quiet. Perhaps at busier times of the year the two one-way cobbled streets either side of the hotel could be a bit noisy with traffic- particularly if you needed the window open for fresh air. There is no aircon. Also we had no difficulty hearing the family in the next room although it wasn't too intrusive. No English TV channels were available. The evening meal in the Bistrot was fresh, tasty and well cooked. Free public parking is available a short walk from the hotel although the one way system makes it seem further away by road. On-street parking costs 8 euros per day.

Room Tip: It would be a pity to stay here and not book a room with a view of the bay.
