Funny little garden that has been renovated in the grounds of the Abby in the old part of town. Slightly quaint and eccentric. Worth a detour.

A stay in St Valery wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Herbarium. It's interesting to see the changes from one visit to the next, but above all it's simply a lovely, peaceful garden. It's the perfect place to wander around or simply sit & relax, admire the view & absorb the scents & colours.

The Herbarium is a great addition to the gentle attractions of St. Valery. It is not a large garden, but it has been lovingly designed, is well maintained and contains a wide selection of plants ( over 1000 according to its publicity). It is what might be described as an ’intellectual garden’ by virtue of its plant collection, style and the quotations on the walls from French philosophers and writers. An old apple tree and a spectacular rose arbour provide focal points A haven of peace when the promenade is thronged with hundreds of visitors. When I visited last week they were hosting a small but very pleasing temporary garden sculpture exhibition. An A4 laminated sheet is available, in different languages ,which provides a plan of the contents of the different beds. The entrance is tucked away in a side road in the old town, the tourist information office has a leaflet about the garden, containing a location map. If you are interested in gardens, or garden photography it provides a very worthwhile hour long visit, entrance fee € 6.

This gem of a garden is set in the Rue Fleuries of the medieval high town of St Valery. You are welcomed and directed to the plan of the garden so you can wander around. Its an informal garden dedicated to plants that 'work', for flavour, food or medicine. There are quotes from literature on slates hanging in unexpected places. It's colourful, tranquil and a pure delight. The streets around are also tended by the gardeners of the Herbarium and are also very beautiful.
