Owner description: Owner description: Lismore Castle Gardens and Gallery are situated on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the proud winner of numerous Tidiest Town awards. Visitors are invited to wander in the historic gardens, arranged over seven acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls of Lismore Castle. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley. Featuring a wide variety of beautifully maintained plants and trees, as well as a permanent sculpture collection, Lismore Castle Gardens is one of the highlights of The Waterford Garden Trail, which includes fifteen gardens around Co. Waterford. Please note the castle itself is a private residence and is therefore not open to visitors. Entry to the garden includes access to the contemporary art gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, which hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists. There is also a small refreshment counter and a reading room, plus art materials available for children. Visitors might also enjoy other attractions located within walking distance of the gardens. These include Lismore Cathedral, the Heritage Centre and Lady Louisa's walk, as well as a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. Please note due to the historic nature of the gardens and the naturally steep terrain of the ground, there are some unavoidable limitations on access for visitors who use a wheelchair or are less mobile. The gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, is occasionally closed for installation of temporary exhibitions, please contact us for full details.

“Most beautiful view”

We didn't get a chance to go through the grounds but we walked around the outside. There is a view of the castle with the changing colors of the trees and the river running below. It is amazing.

“SEP 2013 Visit”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Visited Lismore - unable to enter any part of the Castle unlike the other Duke of Devonshire castles in England. We were able to tour the gardens and walk around the castle which is magnificent, but a real shame that none of it is open to the public. The gardens are quite impressive and seemingly very busy wit the production of fruit and veg. Best photo op is from the highway leading into town from the north and standing on the bridge under whic a river flows.

“Lismore Castle”
Reviewed 3 October 2013

Located 45 minutes from Waterford City, the castle rests on the bank of the blackwater river. The castle grounds and gardens are open to the public for a fee, however the main castle is private and not available to public viewing. The castle sits in the picturesque town of lismore in county Waterford, which in the past has won awards for being one of Ireland's most tidy towns. The castle steeped in history was visited in 1171 by henry ll, king of England. Also in 1589 it was under the lease of Sir Walter Raleigh. The castle offers budding photographers and sightseers stunning images. I's fairy tale quality will keep the kids amused. The castle is located next to a children s playground and is just miles from the Vee Pass, in the Knockmealdown Mountains. Only wish the castle itself was open to the public.
