Owner description: Owner description: Lismore Castle Gardens and Gallery are situated on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the proud winner of numerous Tidiest Town awards. Visitors are invited to wander in the historic gardens, arranged over seven acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls of Lismore Castle. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley. Featuring a wide variety of beautifully maintained plants and trees, as well as a permanent sculpture collection, Lismore Castle Gardens is one of the highlights of The Waterford Garden Trail, which includes fifteen gardens around Co. Waterford. Please note the castle itself is a private residence and is therefore not open to visitors. Entry to the garden includes access to the contemporary art gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, which hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists. There is also a small refreshment counter and a reading room, plus art materials available for children. Visitors might also enjoy other attractions located within walking distance of the gardens. These include Lismore Cathedral, the Heritage Centre and Lady Louisa's walk, as well as a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. Please note due to the historic nature of the gardens and the naturally steep terrain of the ground, there are some unavoidable limitations on access for visitors who use a wheelchair or are less mobile. The gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, is occasionally closed for installation of temporary exhibitions, please contact us for full details.

This is a lovely way to spend the afternoon visiting Lismore. Lismore town is located in Waterford County and is one of those towns that is picturesque, unique and full of history. The castle is privately owned and is only open a few times a year. You may rent the castle on certain dates in the year in it's entirety for family or group stays. The gardens are open to the public for a fee and are very good. With new staff minding the garden and new head gardener it is an excellent time to see a working garden transforming. The staff here are helpful with plant names and information. Admission also includes admission into the art gallery that is ever changing and also holds craft, arts and antiques fairs throughout the year, as well as the not to be missed opera.

Thank you for your kind words about our gardens and the wonderful town of Lismore, I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit and I hope we will be able to welcome you back to enjoy the garden’s continuing transformation as it evolves.

We are honoured to be hosting an opera once again as part of the Lismore Music Festival. This year it is Mozart’s Magic Flute, with performances on the evenings of 31 May and 1 June.

We visited the gardens at Lismore Castle and were delighted with what we saw. There is a new Head Gardener, and the gardens looked absolutely superb. Vegetable planting, great topiary, lovely views. Friendly staff who were willing to share their knowledge, a new gallery and book shop. There are also many interesting sculptures around the gardens. There is produce to buy and books. It would benefit from a small tea shop. There is coffee in the gallery but somewhere to sit to see the gardens would be good.

Thank you very much for your kind comments about our gardens which I was only too delighted to pass on to the team.

We agree about having somewhere to sit and you may be interested to hear we are currently building a pergola for just that purpose, scheduled to be completed later this summer. The idea is to form a space that is low-key, sheltered and quiet. The wood will come from a great chestnut tree that once grew on the estate.

It's a pity this new area was not ready when you visited, but I hope we will have the chance to welcome you back soon so you can enjoy it and other ongoing improvements around the gardens.

The gardens are very well set out and it is a pleasant way to spend an hour or two. The gallery is also well set up but very 'modem art' great if that's your thing.

The gardens around the castle are beautifully kept, and the caste ( not included in the tour as it is still in use) in the background gives it that little bit extra. The staff is really friendly and tries to do their best to give everyone a good time. When in the area this place is a must visit. My only negative point would be that I thought the price was a bit steep.

There is amazing place. Entry ticket costs 8 euro. And we walked around the outside, and now I sorry that didn't enter.
